    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉This study provides a descriptive characterization of the modern sedimentary processes in Lake Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan, important for the selection of a suitable coring or deep‐drilling site, interpretation of future core data and applicability of proxies. The quasi‐equidistant sampling grid of 66 sediment surface samples covers the entirety of the lake basin and is complemented by 10 samples from the major inflows. The methodological approach includes geochemical, granulometric, lipid biomarker, diatom, and statistical analyses. The quantitative and qualitative changes in sediment composition yield information on its generic origin and prevailing transport and depositional environments. The composition of the surface sediments in Issyk Kul is highly heterogenous. Nearshore deposition is mainly controlled by wave action and by fluvial sediment supply with highest quantities of detrital input coming from the high‐energetic, eastern tributaries. Sediments in the deep central basin are mainly produced in situ and dominated by authigenic calcite. Biogenic accumulation is overall low, except for the western extremity of the lake, where the nearshore, shallow‐water, and low‐energetic environment favors aquatic productivity and subsequent preservation of organic material and diatoms. Redeposition of sediments is a dominant process along the slopes across the southern and western basin floor, where run‐out distances of mass movement deposits are up to 5 km. Directional sediment transport by lake currents appears to be less important, except for the transport of very fine‐grained organic matter. Biomarker‐inferred temperature reconstructions suggest lake surface temperatures of ∼15°C in the western littoral zone and in Tyup Bay and a decrease to ∼13°C basinward.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Intensive research on the natural component of climate variability on geological time scales is needed to better understand and validate current and future climate change. Lakes can provide continuous sediment successions that allow us to reconstruct regional trends in climate and environment dynamics far beyond the industrial age. In continental Eurasia, Lake Issyk Kul, one of the deepest and largest mountain lakes in the world, has long been targeted for a deep‐drilling campaign, because its sediment succession potentially holds information of the past ∼10 million years. Prerequisite for future drilling is a better understanding of prevailing transport and (re)deposition mechanisms in Lake Issyk Kul. The overarching aim of this study is to test the applicability of different proxies, vital for the interpretation of future sediment core data. Therefore, a quasi‐equidistant sampling grid of up to 66 sediment surface (and 10 river) samples spanning the entire lake basin of Lake Issyk Kul was examined by means of sedimentological, geochemical, biological, and statistical analyses. Yet, a number of environmental processes might bias reliable SST estimations. Here, we investigate the fidelity of SST reconstructions for the western tropical South Atlantic (WTSA) for the interval covered by Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 6–5, utilizing a core collected off eastern Brazil at ∼20°S. This interval was selected as previous SST estimates based on Mg/Ca ratios of planktic foraminifera suggested a peculiar pooling of warm surface waters in the WTSA during MIS 6 despite glacial boundary conditions. To ground‐truth the Mg/Ca‐based SST data we generated SST reconstructions on the same core material using the alkenone and TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉 paleothermometers. Comparison with alkenone‐based temperature estimates corroborate the previous Mg/Ca‐based SST reconstructions, supporting the suggestion of a warm‐water anomaly during MIS 6. In contrast, TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉‐derived temperatures, albeit representing annual mean SST in recent core top samples, are up to 6°C colder than Mg/Ca‐ and alkenone‐based SST reconstructions. We interpret the periods of anomalously cold TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉‐temperatures as a result of a vertical migration of the TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉 producers (heterotrophic marine Thaumarchaeota) toward greater water depths, following food availability during phases of enhanced fluvial suspension input. Likewise, the data suggest that alkenone‐based SST are, albeit to a minor degree when compared to TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉, affected by river run‐off and/or a seasonal bias in the growth season of haptophyte algae.〈/p〉

The alkenone‐based temperature estimates agree with previous Mg/Ca‐based SST reconstructions, supporting the existence of a warm‐water anomaly in the WTSA during MIS 6. On the other hand, TEX〈sub〉86〈/sub〉‐derived temperatures were up to 6°C colder than Mg/Ca‐ and alkenone‐based SST reconstructions. This discrepancy might be a result of a vertical migration of the TEX86 producers toward greater water depths where they feed on particles of organic matter. These migrations into deeper waters occurred during phases of increased river run‐off fluvial suspension input which enhanced surface primary productivity and facilitated vertical particle flux through the water column.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉Snow petrels (〈italic〉Pagodroma nivea〈/italic〉), which are endemic to the Antarctic region, produce proventricular stomach oil from ingested food for feeding purposes but also spit the oil in the immediate surrounds of the nests, where it forms encrustations over time (Antarctic mumiyo). These deposits provide a unique opportunity to understand the paleo‐ecological diet of snow petrels and because the seabirds forage in the ocean, they potentially provide an archive of past marine environmental conditions in the Southern Ocean. For validating methods for reconstructions we use compositional data obtained on modern stomach oils and DNA data from fecal samples of snow petrels. We find that the distribution of carboxylic acid compounds in modern stomach oils and in the fossil deposits are consistent with variable contributions of fish and krill, which are the main constituents of modern snow petrel diet, and allows inference of past changes in snow petrel diet from the fossil record. Analyses of mumiyo deposits from six regions in East Antarctica reveal systematic differences in the isotopic composition of organic matter (δ〈sup〉13〈/sup〉C and δ〈sup〉15〈/sup〉N) and carboxylic acid patterns. This may suggest regional and/or temporal variability in the composition of snow petrels diet, likely differing in response to the prevailing environmental conditions in the foraging range of the birds, such as sea‐ice variability, polynya activity and primary productivity. Our study provides confidence for using these approaches for broader scale paleo‐studies in the future and for an assessment of the temporal changes and regional variability in snow petrel diet.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: To better understand interactions of biological and physical processes in Antarctic marine ecosystems, we investigate fossil deposits of stomach oil of snow petrels for their use as a geological archive for past environmental changes. The deposits form over time in the surroundings of the nesting cavities of snow petrels, which produce stomach oil from ingested food but also spit it at nest robbers. In fresh oil the lipid and isotopic composition can be traced back to the composition of snow petrel food, such as variable proportions of fish and krill. From comparing the lipid and δ〈sup〉13〈/sup〉C‐isotopic composition of modern oil to fossil deposits we suggest it is possible to identify changes in the diet of snow petrels in the fossil record. Since the composition of the diet is closely linked to the prevailing environmental conditions in the marine foraging region of the birds, such as summer sea ice extent, this information can be used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Our study of deposits from widely separated regions in Antarctica shows that there are spatial and temporal differences in the composition of stomach oil deposits, likely related to the prevailing environmental conditions.     Description: Lake Ohrid shared by the Republics of Albania and Macedonia is formed by a tectonically active graben within the south Balkans and suggested to be the oldest lake in Europe. Several studies have shown that the lake provides a valuable record of climatic and environmental changes and a distal tephrostratigraphic record of volcanic eruptions from Italy. Fault structures identified in seismic data demonstrate that sediments have also the potential to record tectonic activity in the region. Here, we provide an example of linking seismic and sedimentological information with tectonic activity and historical documents. Historical documents indicate that a major earthquake destroyed the city of Lychnidus (today: city of Ohrid) in the early 6th century AD. Multichannel seismic profiles, parametric sediment echosounder profiles, and a 10.08m long sediment record from the western part of the lake indicate a 2m thick mass wasting deposit, which is tentatively correlated with this earthquake. The mass wasting deposit is chronologically well constrained, as it directly overlays the AD472/AD 512 tephra. Moreover, radiocarbon dates and cross correlation with other sediment sequences with similar geochemical characteristics of the Holocene indicate that the mass wasting event took place prior to the onset of the Medieval Warm Period, and is attributed it to one of the known earthquakes in the region in the early 6th century AD.

    Description: Most of the marine biotic crises that occurred during the hot Mesozoic era have been linked to episodes of extreme warmth(1,2). Others, however, may have occurred during cooler intervals that interrupted Cretaceous greenhouse warmth(3-5). There are some indications of cooling in the late Aptian(6-8) (116-114 Myr ago), but it has not been definitively linked to biotic crisis. Here we assess the timing and magnitude of late Aptian cooling and its association with biotic crises using a suite of geochemical and micropalaeontological assessments from a marine sediment core from the North Atlantic Ocean as well as global biogeochemical modelling. Sea surface temperatures derived from the TEX86 proxy suggest that surface waters cooled by about 5 degrees C during the two million years, coincident with a positive delta C-13 excursion of approximately 2 parts per thousand in carbonates and organic carbon. Surface productivity was enhanced during this period, but the abundance of planktonic foraminifera and nannoconid phytoplankton declined. Our simulations with a biogeochemical model indicate that the delta C-13 excursion associated with the cooling could be explained by the burial of about 812,000 gigatons of carbon over 2.5 million years. About 50% of the this carbon burial occurred in the Atlantic, Southern and Tethys ocean basins. We conclude that global cooling during greenhouse conditions can cause perturbations to marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles at scales comparable to those associated with global warming

    Description: Paleoenvironmental studies and climate models demonstrate that fl uvial runoff and moisture availability in the Caribbean hinterland react very sensitively to climatic variations. Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate records document pronounced dry and wet periods over tropical South America mainly caused by shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). However, forcing mechanisms for changes in the ITCZ position remain controversial. Here we present high-resolution foraminiferal Ba/Ca and δ18Oseawater records from a core located within the Orinoco River outfl ow documenting abrupt hydrological changes in the Orinoco catchment area during the deglacial and Holocene. Our data, obtained from the surface-dwelling foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (pink), show an abrupt increase in Ba/ Ca ratios in the early Holocene, starting ~600 yr after the end of the Younger Dryas (YD) cold interval at ca. 10.8 ka and suggesting a massive reorganization of moisture sources in northern South America. In contrast, the salinity dependent δ18Oseawater from the same samples shows a gradual decrease starting at the end of the YD. The offset of our Ba/Ca peak excludes meltwater release in conjunction with the northern Andean glacier retreat well before the end of the YD as a forcing mechanism. We suggest that the Ba/Ca record documents an abrupt increase in Ba-rich waters of a northern Andean source caused by the insolation-driven shift of the ITCZ and/or enhanced monsoon activity.

    Description: In Antarctic and Subantarctic environments, 14C‐based age determination is often challenging due to unknown reservoir effects, low organic carbon contents of sediments, and high contributions of petrogenic (14C‐free) carbon in ice marginal settings. In this study, we evaluate possible benefits and challenges of compound‐specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) as a tool for age determination of marine Antarctic and Subantarctic sediment sequences. We present a comprehensive data set of 14C ages obtained on bulk organic carbon, carbonates, and on fatty acids (FA) from three coastal marine sediment cores from Subantarctic South Georgia and East Antarctica. Low molecular weight (LMW) FA represent the least 14C‐depleted fraction, indicating that the phytoplankton‐derived compounds can be a means of dating sediments. In contrast, vascular plant‐derived high molecular weight FA are systematically depleted in 14C relative to the low molecular weight homologues, reflecting processes such as soil formation/erosion in the catchment. Comparative age‐depth models show significant differences, depending on the material used for the respective models. While the land plant‐derived FA may lead to an overestimation of the actual sediment age, LMW FA reveal complex aquatic reservoir effects. Bulk sedimentary organic carbon 14C ages likely provide appropriate age estimates in settings with low petrogenic carbon input in the Antarctic, whereas CSRA has the potential to produce improved age control in settings with high contributions of petrogenic carbon.

    Description: Stable isotopes (δ18O, δD) of wedge ice hold potential to reconstruct past winter climate conditions. Here, we present records of the marine isotope stages (MIS) 3 and 2 including the last Glacial maximum (LGM) from Bol’shoy Lyakhovsky Island (NE Siberia). MIS 3 wedge ice dated from 52 to 40 Kyr b2k varies between −32 and −29‰ in δ18O. Colder LGM conditions are implied by δ18O of −37‰ around 25 Kyr b2k. Similar Deuterium excess values indicate comparable moisture sources during MIS 3 and MIS 2. Regional LGM climate reconstructions depend on the seasonal resolution of the proxies and model simulations. Our wedge‐ice record reflects coldest winters during global minima in atmospheric CO2 and sea level. The extreme LGM winter cooling is not represented in model projections of global LGM climate where West Beringia shows noticeably little cooling or even warming in mean annual temperatures compared to the late Holocene.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The geochemical signature of stable isotopes of permafrost ground ice preserves information about past climate conditions. A common type of ground ice is ice wedges that form by the freezing of snowmelt in frost cracks developed on the ground and grow over time in width and length. Winter temperatures, and the type (snow or rain) and origin (regional moisture source) of winter precipitation largely control the stable isotope characteristics of oxygen and hydrogen in ice wedges. Here, we study the stable isotope composition of ice wedges from the last glacial period in northeastern Siberia. Plant and animal fossils that were found within the ice and in the surrounding frozen ground provide age control spanning from more than 50 to 24 thousand years ago when the ice wedges grew. The coldest winter conditions are inferred from a New Siberian Island ice‐wedge site as indicated by the lowest stable isotope values of all our sampled ice wedges at times, corresponding to the last Glacial maximum around 25 thousand years ago.
