Notes: We report energy calculations of selected first-row atoms using explicit approximate Hartree-Fock functionals generated in the context of the local-scaling version of density functional theory. We show that these approximate functionals yield highly accurate upper bounds to the Hartree-Fock energies of the atoms considered. The generation of molecular functionals in terms of local-scaling transformations centered at each nucleus is discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The vasodilatatory, endothelium-mediated, effect of histamine (H), through H1 receptor, in the isolated and perfused mesenteric bed of the rat, undergoes strong desensitization during perfusion or repetitive injections of noradrenaline (NA) and H. The mesenteric bed completely desensitized to H is responsive to carbachol (C) and this latter compound does not affect the H desensitization. The homologous desensitization to C effect is very small, attaining less than 10% after 30 min of continuous perfusion. In this work the effect of inhibitors or activators of protein-kinase(s)-C (PKC) are studied during continuous perfusion of H or C in preparations preconstricted by NA. Staurosporine antagonizes the onset of the H desensitization, while the rate of desensitization in increased by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA). PMA, at a concentration from 10−12 to 10−10M, selectively enhances the homologous desensitization of H, while at 10−8 M it also produces a desensitization to C. At least two different PKC isoenzymes might be involved in the desensitization of the vasodilatatory effect of H and C in the isolated and perfused rat mesenteric bed.

Notes: Summary This follow-up study assesses further suicidal risk and discusses the characteristics of patients who have repeatedly attempted suicide. Depth of coma alone due to overdose of medication does not seem to be a sufficient criterion for the assessment of further suicidal risk. Better predictors seem to be: age, family status, degree of loneliness and social disintegration, presence of existential anxiety, and lack of self-assertiveness. Patients who made repeated suicide attempts had a higher neuroticism score, were more often alcohol- and drug-dependent, and came more often from a broken home. Finally, the characteristics of various patient groups are delineated.

Notes: Abstract: The Thomas-Fermi equation, in conjunction with the Poisson equation is solved exactly for the problem of the two-dimensional circular parabolic quantum dot in the presence of a weak magnetic field, in the framework of the local spin-density approximation. The total energy, chemical potential, differential capacitance, degree of polarization, and diamagnetic susceptibility were calculated. Asymptotic solutions were obtained for the limits of strong and weak confinement.

Notes: Abstract: An exactly solvable local Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximation is applied to the calculation of the ground-state density of three-dimensional quantum dot arrays, where we give estimates to properties like total energy, chemical potential, and differential capacitance. Numeric examples are calculated for pairs of quantum dots using a Gaussian confining potential. The computational complexity of the present method is linear in the number of electrons and centers of the system.

Description: Author(s): J. M. Pino, R. J. Wild, P. Makotyn, D. S. Jin, and E. A. Cornell We demonstrate a photon-counting technique for detecting Bragg excitation of an ultracold gas of atoms. By measuring the response of the light field to the atoms, we derive a signal independent of traditional time-of-flight atom-imaging techniques. With heterodyne detection we achieve photon shot-no... Description: Seismically-induced event deposits embedded in the sedimentary infill of lacustrine basins are highly useful for palaeoseismic reconstructions. Recent, well-documented, great megathrust earthquakes provide an ideal opportunity to calibrate seismically-induced event deposits for lakes with different characteristics and located in different settings. This study used 107 short sediment cores to investigate the sedimentary impact of the 1960 M w 9.5 Valdivia and the 2010 M w 8.8 Maule earthquakes in 17 lakes in South-Central Chile (i.e. lakes Negra, Lo Encañado, Aculeo, Vichuquén, Laja, Villarrica, Calafquén, Pullinque, Pellaifa, Panguipulli, Neltume, Riñihue, Ranco, Maihue, Puyehue, Rupanco and Llanquihue). A combination of image analysis, magnetic susceptibility and grain-size analysis allows identification of five types of seismically-induced event deposits: (i) mass-transport deposits; (ii) in situ deformations; (iii) lacustrine turbidites with a composition similar to the hemipelagic background sediments (lacustrine turbidites type 1); (iv) lacustrine turbidites with a composition different from the background sediments (Lacustrine turbidites type 2); and (v) megaturbidites. These seismically-induced event deposits were compared to local seismic intensities of the causative earthquakes, eyewitness reports, post-earthquake observations, and vegetation and geomorphology of the catchment and the lake. Megaturbidites occur where lake seiches took place. Lacustrine turbidites type 2 can be the result of: (i) local near-shore mass wasting; (ii) delta collapse; (iii) onshore landslides; (iv) debris-flows or mudflows; or (v) fluvial reworking of landslide debris. On the contrary, lacustrine turbidites type 1 are the result of shallow mass wasting on sublacustrine slopes covered by hemipelagic sediments. Due to their more constrained origin, lacustrine turbidites type 1 are the most reliable type of seismically-induced event deposits in quantitative palaeoseismology, because they are almost exclusively triggered by earthquake shaking. Moreover, they most sensitively record varying seismic shaking intensities. The number of lacustrine turbidites type 1 linearly increases with increasing seismic intensity, starting with no lacustrine turbidites type 1 at intensities between V½ and VI and reaching 100% when intensities are higher than VII½. Combining different types of seismically-induced event deposits allows the reconstruction of the complete impact of an earthquake. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
