    Description / Table of Contents: The ability of modern climate models to simulate ice season length in the Arctic, its recent changes and navigation season on Arctic marine routes along the Eurasian and the North American coastlines is evaluated using satellite ice cover observations for 19792007. Simulated mean sea ice season duration fits remarkably well to satellite observations and so do the simulated 20th century changes using historical forcing. This provides confidence to extend the analysis to projections for the twenty-first century. The navigation season for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and Northwest Passage (NWP), alternative sea routes from the North Atlantic to Asia, will considerably increase during this century. The models predict prolongation of the season with a free passage from 3 to 6 months for the NSR and from 2 to 4 months for the NWP by the end of twenty-first century according to A1B scenario of the IPCC. This suggests that transit through the NSR from Western Europe to the Far East may be up to 15% more profitable in comparison to Suez Canal transit by the end of the twenty-first century.

    Description: The last interglaciation (~130 to 116 ka) is a time period with a strong astronomically induced seasonal forcing of insolation compared to the present. Proxy records indicate a significantly different climate to that of the modern, in particular Arctic summer warming and higher eustatic sea level. Because the forcings are relatively well constrained, it provides an opportunity to test numerical models which are used for future climate prediction. In this paper we compile a set of climate model simulations of the early last interglaciation (130 to 125 ka), encompassing a range of model complexities. We compare the simulations to each other and to a recently published compilation of last interglacial temperature estimates. We show that the annual mean response of the models is rather small, with no clear signal in many regions. However, the seasonal response is more robust, and there is significant agreement amongst models as to the regions of warming vs cooling. However, the quantitative agreement of the model simulations with data is poor, with the models in general underestimating the magnitude of response seen in the proxies. Taking possible seasonal biases in the proxies into account improves the agreement, but only marginally. However, a lack of uncertainty estimates in the data does not allow us to draw firm conclusions. Instead, this paper points to several ways in which both modelling and data could be improved, to allow a more robust model–data comparison.

    Description: Twenty‐first‐century climate change projections are uncertain, especially on regional scales. An important source of uncertainty is that climate models exhibit biases, which limits their ability to predict climate. One of the largest biases is the too warm sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern tropical Atlantic (TA), reflecting deficient atmospheric and oceanic circulation. Here, we show that CO2‐forced TA‐sector climate changes simulated by state‐of‐the‐art climate models exhibit a strong mean‐state dependence. In particular, models simulating largest SST warming in the eastern TA, consistent with the warming observed since the mid‐20th century, typically exhibit a more realistic mean state than models simulating largest warming in the western TA. The former models exhibit a larger climate sensitivity, and predict stronger and in part qualitatively different climate changes over the TA sector, for example in precipitation. These findings may help to reducing uncertainty in TA‐climate change projections.

    Notes: Measurements of current perpendicular (CPP) magnetoresistance (MR) on hybrid and exchange-biased spin valves allow determination of the layer anisotropy parameter β for ferromagnetic alloys, thus allowing testing of whether this CPP β is similar to values obtained from direct measurements on, and theoretical estimates for, dilute bulk ferromagnetic alloys. Of special interest are alloys where β is expected to be negative. In this article, we derive a value of β for a Ni97Cr3 alloy using such spin valves based upon permalloy. We confirm prior CPP-MR results that this β is negative, but our inferred value, β=−0.35±0.1, is closer to bulk and theoretical estimates. Our data thus provide new support for a unified picture of β in the CPP-MR and bulk alloys. We also derive a short spin-diffusion length in NiCr, lsf=3±1 nm. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The question of how to proceed toward ever more realistic plasma simulation studies using ever increasing computing power is addressed. The answer presented here is the M3D (Multilevel 3D) project, which has developed a code package with a hierarchy of physics levels that resolve increasingly complete subsets of phase-spaces and are thus increasingly more realistic. The rationale for the multilevel physics models is given. Each physics level is described and examples of its application are given. The existing physics levels are fluid models (3D configuration space), namely magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and two-fluids; and hybrid models, namely gyrokinetic-energetic-particle/MHD (5D energetic particle phase-space), gyrokinetic-particle-ion/fluid-electron (5D ion phase-space), and full-kinetic-particle-ion/fluid-electron level (6D ion phase-space). Resolving electron phase-space (5D or 6D) remains a future project. Phase-space-fluid models are not used in favor of δf particle models. A practical and accurate nonlinear fluid closure for noncollisional plasmas seems not likely in the near future. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Full sawtooth crashes in high temperature plasmas have been investigated on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 33, 1509 (1991)]. A strong asymmetry in the direction of major radius, a feature of the ballooning mode, and a remaining m=1 region after the crash have been observed with electron cyclotron emission image reconstructions. The TFTR data is not consistent with two-dimensional (2-D) models; it rather suggests a three-dimensional (3-D) localized reconnection arising on the bad curvature side. This process explains the phenomenon of fast heat transfer which keeps the condition q0〈1.©1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements are presented of the 4.2 K current perpendicular specific resistances (area times resistance) and magnetoresistances of a series of Ni66Fe13Co21=Py′-based symmetric exchange-biased spin valves and Py′–Co hybrid spin valves. The behaviors of both kinds of Py′-based spin valves are similar to those for comparable Ni84Fe16=Py-based spin valves. The low temperature giant magnetoresistive parameters of Py′ must, thus, be similar to those for Py, suggesting that Py′ should be a viable alternative to Py for technological uses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
