    Notes: Summary Synthesis of mitochondrial DNA (mitDNA) and nuclear DNA (nucDNA) during growth of synchronously dividing cultures of Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S. pombe) was followed by pulse labelling with radioactive adenine and determination of its rate of incorporation into total protoplast DNA and into the DNA of DNase-treated mitochondria at different stages of the cell cycle. It could be demonstrated that both mitDNA and nucDNA were synthesised discontinuously and at different points in the cell cycle.

    Description: Il 6 aprile 2009 (3.32 locali) un terremoto di Mw 6,3 ha colpito la regione Abruzzo (Italia centrale) producendo un enorme danno alla città de L'Aquila e ai paesi limitrofi causando circa 300 morti e 60.000 senza fissa dimora. A seguito di questo evento sismico, la struttura di Pronto Intervento dell’INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), si è rapidamente attivata installando in area epicentrale due reti sismiche temporanee (Re.Mo.Tel. in real-time e Re.Mo. in stand-alone) ed il Centro Operativo Emergenza Sismica. In questo lavoro presentiamo come si e’ svolta la campagna sismica della Re.Mo., avente l’obiettivo di acquisire dati di alta qualità e dettaglio per studiare le sorgenti sismiche, l’evoluzione spazio temporale della sequenza e caratterizzare attraverso la microsismicita’ le strutture di faglia attivate ed le proprieta’ del mezzo circostante. Saranno descritte nel dettaglio l’installazione compiuta a poche ore dal mainshock, il suo sviluppo legato all’evoluzione della sequenza sismica, fino alla sua dismissione nel Marzo 2010.

    Description: In summer 2013 a toxic and polluting gas blowout (19 tonnes day−1 CO2, 95 kg day−1 CH4) occurred from two shallow boreholes drilled at only 50 m from the International Airport of Rome (Italy), in the town of Fiumicino. Another gas blowout occurred in the same period from a borehole located offshore, 2 km away, also generating sea-water acidification; it lasted only a couple of days. Onshore, CO2was also diffusing fromholes within the soil, particularly toward the airport, generating a soil flux up to 1.8 tonnes day−1. In 3.5 months ~1500 tonnes of CO2 and 5.4 tonnes of CH4 were emitted in the atmosphere. Temporal monitoring of gas geochemistry indicates that in this area a mixing occurs between shallow and pressurized gas pockets, CO2-dominated, but with different chemical (i.e., He/CH4 ratio) and isotopic (3He/4He, δ13C-δDCH4) characteristics. Numerical simulation of CO2 dispersion in the atmosphere showed that dangerous air CO2 concentrations, up to lethal values, were only found near the vents at a height of 0.2 m. Fiumicino is a high blowout risk area, as CO2 rising through deep reaching faults pressurizes the shallowaquifer contained in gravels confined underneath shales of the Tiber delta deposits. The Fiumicino blowout is a typical example of dangerous phenomenon that may occur in urban context lying nearby active or recent volcanoes and requires quick response on hazard assessment by scientists to be addressed to civil protection and administrators.

    Description: Instrumental seismicity of the greater Rome area is analyzed using the most recent seismological database. The aim of this study is to identify potential seismogenic structures responsible for the moderate seismicity that characterizes this sector, where no surface faulting is expected on the basis of the absence of strong local earthquakes, as evidenced by the 2000‐year‐long historical record. Nevertheless, in light of the great value and the high vulnerability of the architectural and monumental patrimony of Rome, even the occurrence of moderate events imposes a careful assessment of the hazard, linked to the presence of active faults that are undetectable by means of classic geological field investigation. Seismic data here analyzed belong to the period 1997–2008 and show local magnitude (ML) ranging from 1.5 to 4.7. To better constrain the hypocentral depths, we computed the Vp/Vs ratio using a modified Wadati method and the minimum 1‐D velocity model that approximates the seismic structure of the study area. Moreover, we applied a double difference hypocentral determination technique to improve earthquake locations. Most of the located seismicity appears to be concentrated within seven main clusters. Spatial distribution of the seismicity allowed us to identify several seismogenic structures, corresponding to previously undetected or only supposed active faults. The stress tensor obtained by inverting the focal mechanisms computed in this study is in agreement with the NE–SW extensional tectonic stress active in the inner chain of the Apennines, although there is evidence of some local stress field heterogeneities.

    Description: The Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa is located in an historical, three floor building, of the small town Rocca di Papa, twentyfive kilometres from Rome. The edifice was, until 1931, the place of the Geodynamic Observatory, created in 1889 by the famous seismologist Michele Stefano De Rossi. The museum is due to an agreement between the Town Council of Rocca di Papa and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica (INGV, one of the most important European Research Institutions operating in geophysics) signed in 2000. After bureaucratic passages and two years of important restoration the museum was open to the public at 26th February 2005. The main aim of the Geophysical Museum is to illustrate how experimental data and information, accumulated by science in the course of time, led to new hypotheses on the internal structure of the Earth. The target of the educational and of the scientific disciplines of the Museum is mainly school students of all ages, but also local residents, and tourists: since its opening, approximately two years ago, the Museum has been visited by more than eight-thousand people. Posters, movie presentations, plastics, games and interactive experiments explain to visitors the main topics of geophysics and the stages of scientific research which led to the modern concept of the Earth internal model. Seismic instruments and games are easily accessible so that the visitor can interact with them: experimental data are recorded in real time and displayed through different monitors placed throughout the rooms. The museum has also a small cinema for three dimensional projections which allow visitors to experience a virtual tour on the Alban Hills, the seismic zone where the museum is located, and also on some other Italian tectonic belts where earthquakes occurred in past. The article introduces the museum and the seismological characteristics of the area, and describes the activities, the exhibits of the Museum and their methodology.

    Description: This paper introduces the Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa (Roma, Italy) where visitors can encounter a fascinating journey towards the Earth's core. The aim of the Museum, which was founded on February 26th 2005, is to make the language of Geophysics friendlier and to show the relationship between science and science fiction. The Geophysical Museum is housed in the historical Geodynamic Observatory, built in 1889 by the famous seismologist Michele Stefano De Rossi. The Museum explains the main topics of Geophysics through the use of posters, movie presentations and interactive experiments and presents the stages of scientific research that led to the modern definition of the Earth's internal model. The main focus of the Museum has been school students of all ages, with eight thousand visitors in two years. The Museum connects geophysics to the world of nature and by using science fiction techniques, shows that science is not only the product of certainty or established facts, but also the product of trials and failures. Visitors will find special importance given to seismology, with a special section of ancient and modern seismographs. There is also a room dedicated to a three-dimensional projection system where the visitor can enjoy movies about Alban Hills earthquakes to appreciate the geological evolution of volcanism in this area.

    Description: The eruption, in January 2002, of Mount Nyiragongo in eastern Congo, and the humanitarian disaster that followed in its wake, underlined the critical importance of accurate seismology to predict when such events will take place. Thus, a seismic telemeterd network, with centre in Goma Observatory, was built across Virunga area to help the moniotring of Volcano. Mount Nyiragongo is a volcano in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Great Rift Valley. The most prominent feature of the Democratic Republic of Congo's geology is the Western Rift Zone (WRZ), which runs through its eastern border regions and neighbouring countries (e.g. Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania) between 28°E to 32°E and 4°N to 12°S. The WRZ extends over a 1600 km arc, including lakes Albert, Eduard, Kivu and Tanganyika, until it joins the eastern branch. The Western Rift Valley of Africa has experienced severe earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in recent historical times. Earthquakes with magnitude 〉=6 are not frequent, but may cause significant destruction. They occur mostly in DRC and neighbouring countries (e.g. Uganda and Tanzania). In 1991, IAVCEI selected the Nyiragongo volcano as the ‘African decade volcano’ for the International Decade of Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) program. Nyiragongo is located about 20 km north of Lake Kivu and 15 km north of Goma, a city of about 500,000 inhabitants. Goma is twinned to Gisenyi in Rwanda, which has a population of about 100,000. Several small villages are also located on the flank of the volcano. Population growth and poor or non-existent planning has led to relatively uncontrolled use of land for building, and the development of sites vulnerable to earthquake and/or volcanic risk.
