Description: Determining local magnitude (ML) in a manner that is uniform and internally consistent for earthquakes throughout California and the vicinity is an important component of the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN). We present a new local magnitude attenuation function and corresponding station adjustments that are valid throughout California. The new attenuation function is an analytic function of the radial hypocentral distance between 1 and 500 km. Associated station adjustments are also available for 1185 horizontal seismometer and accelerometer channels from five seismic networks operating in California. The new attenuation function and adjustments provide several advantages to CISN. They allow a more robust ML computation, the MLs are more consistent between northern and southern California than they have been in the past, and because adjustments are now available for more station-network-channel-location codes (SNCLs), MLs can be computed for small earthquakes in more locations than was previously possible. In addition to describing our method for calibrating the new CISN ML, we also present a tool for adding adjustments for new or upgraded stations.

Description: Sea-level rise due to both climate change and non-climatic factors threatens coastal settlements, infrastructure and ecosystems. Projections of mean global sea level (GSL) rise provide insufficient information to plan adaptive responses; local decisions require local projections that accommodate different risk tolerances and time frames and that can be linked to storm surge projections. Here we present a global set of local sea level (LSL) projections to inform decisions on timescales ranging from the coming decades through the 22nd century. We provide complete probability distributions, informed by a combination of expert community assessment, expert elicitation, and process modeling. Between the years 2000 and 2100, we project a very likely (90% probability) GSL rise of 0.5–1.2 m under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5, 0.4–0.9 m under RCP 4.5, and 0.3–0.8 m under RCP 2.6. Site-to-site differences in LSL projections are due to varying non-climatic background uplift or subsidence, oceanographic effects, and spatially-variable responses of the geoid and the lithosphere to shrinking land ice. The Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) constitutes a growing share of variance in GSL and LSL projections. In the global average and at many locations, it is the dominant source of variance in late 21st century projections, though at some sites oceanographic processes contribute the largest share throughout the century. LSL rise dramatically reshapes flood risk, greatly increasing the expected number of ‘1-in-10’ and ‘1-in-100’ year events. Summary Local sea-level rise generally differs from global sea-level rise, with differences arising from local uplift or subsidence, ocean dynamics, and the sea-level response to shrinking land ice. Uncertain Antarctic ice sheet mass loss is the largest source of uncertainty in late-century projections globally and at most sites, although ocean dynamics is the major source in some locations. Sea-level rise greatly amplifies flood risk, pointing to the need for including sea-level rise allowances in flood risk assessments.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Klinischer Verlauf und Autopsiebefunde von 9 Fällen mit Randzonensiderose des ZNS werden beschrieben.
Notes: Summary The clinical and necropsy findings are described in nine cases of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system. Four of these had undergone cerebral hemispherectomy in childhood. All four showed multiple haemorrhagic spots in the cavity membrane and the walls of the remaining lateral ventricle. Of the other cases, to had repeated ruptures of cerebral aneurysms; one showed a destructive lesion of the cerebellar vermis; one, a hydrocephalic child, showed evidence of repeated haemorrhage in the area of a malformed aqueduct; and the last, a baby, had bilateral subdural haematomata. From the histological similarities of these cases and previously reported ones, and from the reported findings in experimental animals, it is argued that the common cause of superficial siderosis is recurrent intraventricular or subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Notes: Abstract The sclerotic pedicle is a commonly encountered roentgen sign that may be associated with numerous conditions, both benign and malignant. The following paper discusses the common as well as the unusual causes of this interesting phenomenon and demonstrates the radiographic presentations of the various etiologies.

Notes: Summary.  Autographa californica M nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) is a large ds DNA virus restricted to larval lepidopteran insect hosts. Using field inversion gel electrophoresis and digestion with a restriction enzyme which cuts the AcMNPV genome once, we detected multiple unit-length genome fragments from replicating viral DNA. Our data suggest that AcMNPV replicates in a head-to-tail manner via rolling circle replication.
