Notes: A microwave reflectometer is in operation on TFTR for the measurement of density fluctuations. The system operates in the X mode and comprises three channels with fixed frequencies of 140, 132, and 125 GHz, and one with stepped frequency of 111–123 GHz. All channels use solid state Gunn oscillators and a heterodyne detection scheme. The system is located outside of the TFTR test cell with the power conveyed to the tokamak vessel by low-loss corrugated waveguides and remotely controlled parabolic mirrors. Preliminary results indicate that the level of density fluctuations with k⊥ 〈1 cm−1 is very small in the central region of Ohmic plasmas (ñ/n〈10−3), and that it increases monotonically with minor radius to values of ≈10−2 at r/a=0.9. Notes: Tritium on the inside walls of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor was detected by configuring the vacuum vessel as an ionization chamber and measuring the secondary electron current from the tritium beta decay. The vessel was typically filled with (approximate)5 Torr of dry nitrogen and the secondary electron current was collected by an internal electrode biased to about +15 V with respect to the vessel wall. The measured variations of the collected current with gas pressure, bias voltage, and applied magnetic fields are described, as well as an in situ calibration made by injecting a known amount of tritium gas. Improved versions of this diagnostic may be useful to track the in-vessel content of surface tritium in future fusion devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: A study was conducted on the influence of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on the radiocalcium uptake and membrane potential of rat cortical synaptosomes previously depolarized by biochemical procedures. The initial calcium entry into isolated nerve terminals was substantally enhanced in the presence of 10-−4M 4-AP in potassium-rich media (60 mM). The fast initial phase of potassium-stimulated calcium entry involves different kinetic characteristics in the presence and the absence of 4-AP. In the presence of 4-AP, the fast component of calcium entry reached a peak during the first 15 s immediately following depolarization. The potassium-stimulated synaptosomal calcium influx at 15 s was 3.5 ± 0.17 times higher in the presence of 4-AP (10-−4M) and 2.6 ± 0.11 times higher in the absence of 4-AP as compared with the respective unstimulated uptake values. In the absence of 4-AP, however, the calcium entry did not show a peak until 45 s after depolarization. The total amount of calcium accumulated in the synaptosome treated and untreated by 4-AP is equal at the end of this initial uptake period. The effect of 4-AP on membrane potential during depolarization of synaptosomes evoked by potassium-rich medium was also determined by means of a potential sensitive fluorescent dye. It was found that 4-AP had no effect on the final level of membrane potential, induced by high [K+]o; however, the kinetics showed significant differences. The initial phase of synaptosomal membrane depolarization was slower in the presence of 4-AP: τ-4-AP: 42 ± 4.0 s, τ-control: 18 ± 2.5 s. The initial calcium entry into the nerve terminals was increased during the 4-AP treatment in potassium-rich media—as resulted from our calcium uptake studies—and thus, during this higher calcium influx, the degree of membrane depolarization was decreased. This faster initial calcium influx constitutes a feasible explanation for the unique effect of 4-AP termed “chemical potentiation” on transmitter release at chemical synapses.

Notes: Abstract: Thyroid hormones and their derivatives were found to inhibit [3H]flunitrazepam binding stereospe-cifically and in a monophasic manner. Among the compounds tested, D-thyroxine was the most potent inhibitor (IC50= 0.5 μM). The naturally occurring L-thyroxine was about 40-fold less potent (IC50= 20 μM). The structure-activity relationships seem to imply that the thyronine base has the principal role in the inhibition of benzo-diazepine receptor binding. The type of inhibition was examined with the most potent inhibitor, D-thyroxine, by Scatchard analysis. The apparent dissociation constant (KD) of the [3H]flunitrazepam binding increased and the receptor density (Bmax) decreased as a function of D-thyroxine concentration; this is characteristic of mixed-type inhibition.

Notes: Background: Chemokines play an important role in the pathophysiology of atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS) and allergy. Recently polymorphisms in the promoter region of RANTES (regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted) and in the gene regulatory region of MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) have been found, which increase the expression of these chemokines. The − 403A allele of the RANTES promoter region was found associated with AEDS in German children. We investigated whether the presence of these polymorphisms was associated with AEDS or allergy in Hungarian children. Methods:  One hundred and twenty-eight children with AEDS, 102 allergic children without AEDS and 303 children of comparable ages without allergic disorders were screened for genotype with a PCR-based assay. Results: There were no significant differences in the frequency of these polymorphisms, or in the distribution of genotypes between the groups. The total IgE concentration, the white blood cell count and the blood eosinophil cell count did not differ between the genotypes. Conclusion: In this cohort of Hungarian children there was no association between − 28G, and − 403A alleles in the RANTES promoter, − 2518G polymorphism in the distal regulatory region of the MCP-1 and AEDS, or allergy.

Notes: The structure and various properties of HCOO−.HOOCH (hydrogen diformate) anionic hydrogen-bonded system are studied. Single, double as well as triple hydrogen-bonded structures are obtained by geometry optimization up to the level of MP2/6-311++G(d,p) and by various density functional approaches. Optimized structures and calculated complexation energies are compared with experimental observation. At least 78% covalent character is found in the strong O–H–O-type hydrogen-bond. Multiple H-bonded structures provide calculated binding energies which are in the closest agreement with experiment. The experimental complexation energy is reproduced within almost chemical accuracy in the range of 35–37 kcal/mol, while the experimental observation is 36.8 kcal/mol. The secondary interaction like C–H.O contacts represent at least 3–4 kcal/mol energy lowering. The O–O bond distance is found in the range of 2.41–2.45 A(ring) by various density functional methods, while the experimental value is 2.45 A(ring). The estimated counterpoise correction to basis set superposition error is also presented in the binding energies. The performance of density functional methods based on Gaussian and Slater-type basis is compared using the G92-DFT and ADF codes, respectively. For comparison the energetics of hydrogen diacetate is given as well. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
