Description: Springwater chemistry and carbon cycling in our study mainly depend on geological composition of the aquifer. The investigated Alpine springs in Slovenia represent waters strongly influenced by chemicalweathering ofMesozoic limestone and dolomite, only one spring was located in Permo-Carboniferous shales. The carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and suspended organic carbon (POC) as well as major solute concentrations yielded insights into the origin of carbon in Alpine spring waters. The major solute composition was dominated by carbonic acid dissolution of calcite. Waters were generally close to saturation with respect to calcite, and dissolved CO2 was up to fortyfold supersaturated relative to the atmosphere. δ13 C of DIC indicates the portion of soil CO2 contributed in water and is related with soil thickness of infiltrating water in aquifer and could be therefore used as a tool for vulnerability assessment. The δ13 C of DIC ranged from−15.8‰ to −1.5‰ and indicated less and more vulnerable aquifers. Mass balances of carbon for spring waters draining carbonate rocks suggest that carbonate dissolution contributes from approximately 49% to 86% and degradation of organic matter from 13.7% to 51.4%, depending on spring and its relation with rock type, soil environment, and geomorphic position. Stable oxygen isotope composition of water (δ18OH2O), and tritium values range from −12.2 to −9.3‰and from6.4 to 9.8 TU, respectively and indicate recharge frommodern precipitation. According to active decay of tritiumand tritiumin modern precipitation the age of spring waters are estimated to be about 2.6 years for springs located in Julian Alps, about 5 years for springs located in Karavanke and about 5 years for springs located in Kamniško–Savinjske Alps.

Description: Cosmic-ray muon radiography (muography), an imaging technique that can provide measurements of rock densities within the top few 100m of a volcanic cone, has now achieved a spatial resolution of the order of 10m in optimal detection conditions. Muography provides images of the top region of a volcano edifice with a resolution that is considerably better than that typically achieved with other conventional methods (i.e. gravimetric). We expect such precise measurements, to provide us with information on anomalies in the rock density distribution, which can be affected by dense lava conduits, low-density magma supply paths or the compression with the depth of the overlying soil. The MUon RAdiography of VESuvius (MURAVES) project is now in its final phase of construction and deployment. Up to four muon hodoscopes, each with a surface of roughly 1m2, will be installed on the slope of Vesuvius and take data for at least 12 months. We will use the muographic profiles, combined with data from gravimetric and seismic measurement campaigns, to determine the stratigraphy of the lava plug at the bottom of the Vesuvius crater, in order to infer potential eruption pathways. While the MURAVES project unfolds, others are using emulsion detectors on Stromboli to study the lava conduits at the top of the volcano. These measurements are ongoing: they have completed two measurement campaigns and are now performing the first data analysis. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue ‘Cosmic-ray muography’.

Notes: The approximate d bands of antiferromagnetic α-Mn are formulated, using Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster, in consideration of the crystal and magnetic structures. The magnetic moments of 29 atoms are calculated by adopting reasonable coefficients of the effective exchange interaction. The obtained result is much the same as the experimental result.

Notes: It is pointed out that the energy decrease due to the magnetization of the spin is large in the ferromagnetic substances and that the energy decrease due to the formation of the antiferromagnetic disposition is large in the antiferromagnetic substances. The calculation is made for the energy decrease in the ferromagnetic state as a function of the number of d electrons. This calculation explains the paramagnetic Au4Ti, the weak ferromagnetic Au4V, and the ferromagnetic Au4Mn. The energy decrease for Au5 and Au3V2 is also calculated, and it is shown that ferromagnetism appears in the vicinity of Au4V. The calculation is made for the energy decrease in the antiferromagnetic state as a function of the number of d electrons. This calculation suggests that antiferromagnetism appears in Au4Cr. The anisotropy energies for Au4V and Au4Mn are calculated to be in agreement with the experimental result. It is shown that the magnetic moment in Au4Cr should be parallel to [001] direction. Finally, the magnetism of Au8TiCr and Au8VMn is discussed, with results consistent with experiments.

Notes: The anisotropy energies of Y2Fe14B, Y2Co14B, Y2Fe14−xCoxB, and La2Co14B are discussed with reference to the band model. The energy bands exclusive and inclusive of the p bands in B are formulated in consideration of the spin-orbit interaction and exchange splitting. The anisotropy constant K1 is estimated through the difference between the calculated electronic energies with the magnetization parallel to [001] and [100]. In Y2Fe14B, the calculated K1 is much the same as the experimental result, and in Y2Co14B, it agrees with the experimental result. In Y2Fe14−xCoxB, the calculated K1 inclusive of the p bands in B is much the same as the experimental result. Finally, the anisotropy energy of La2Co14B is discussed by taking into account the 4f bands just above the Fermi level.

Notes: Electrical resistance of single-crystalline CeAs, CeSb, and CeBi has been measured under hydrostatic pressure. In CeAs and CeSb, pressure enhances the change of overall features in the resistance-temperature R(T) curves. Resistance anomalies associated with magnetic phase transitions are observed and are found to be sensitive to pressure. It is noted that the R(T) curve of CeAs at ∼3 GPa is similar to that of CeSb at ambient pressure.

Notes: We have succeeded in developing a new high-pressure cell designed for measuring the absolute value of the electrical resistivity in magnetic fields at low temperatures. This pressure cell, based on a technique using modified Bridgman anvils with a Teflon capsule, can generate nearly hydrostatic pressure at least up to 6 GPa. The most important feature of this pressure cell is its compact body which can be easily combined with a dilution refrigerator in a superconducting magnet. One of its applications is for precise magneto-transport measurements under nearly hydrostatic pressure, which is demonstrated by the investigation into the pressure-induced superconducting state of the spin-ladder Sr14−xCaxCu24O41 (x=12) single crystal. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The approximate d bands for a noncollinear γ-FeMn alloy are formulated by using Deegan's method and the formulas of Slater and Koster, and by taking into account the exchange interaction terms to produce the multi-spin-density-wave state. The electronic energies for the noncollinear γ-Fe70Mn30 alloy with the spin directions parallel to [100], [110], and [111] are calculated and the anisotropy energy is determined. It is seen that the state with the spin direction [111] becomes the lowest and the multi-spin-density-wave state is realized in it. For other noncollinear γ-FeMn alloys some discussions are given on the magnetic structure for them. Additionally, the anisotropy energies for noncollinear and collinear γ-FeMn alloys are discussed in detail.

Notes: The approximate d bands for Y2Fe14B and Nd2Fe14B are formulated by Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster. The electronic energies of these crystals with the spin directions [001], [100], [101], and [110] are calculated by Gilat and Raubenheimer's method. The experimental result of the anisotropy energy for Y2Fe14B is analyzed with use of these calculated results by introducing the differences of the number of d electrons for these four states. In Nd2Fe14B the same differences of the number of d electrons are introduced and the contribution to the anisotropy energy due to 4f electrons is deduced. This contribution is analyzed by the use of the crystalline field potential (the localized model) and the band model with d-f elements derived by Lendi. The obtained results are considered to be reasonable.
