Notes: Summary A short review of the Neoproterozoic and Cambrian sedimentary and volcanogenic successions in Poland is concerned with depositional and tectonic developments. The successions accumulated in shallow shelf and deeper slope environments. They overlie Palaeoproterozoic crystalline basement of the Baltic Craton and Gondwana-derived Neoproterozoic Cadomian basement. This discrepancy in the nature of the basement is viewed as indicating distinct terranes. During the course of Palaeozoic time, the discrete terranes were assembled along the Teisseyre-Tornquist Lineament and the Trans-European Suture Zone adjacent to the Baltica palaeocontinent.

Description: Early Cambrian acritarchs from the Lukati Formation of Estonia are described, based on new material, and their biological affinities reviewed. The phenotypical variants and the inferred function of their vesicles are indicative for recognising zygotic/resting cysts and vegetative cells. They represent the Chlorophytes in the class Prasinophyceae, which reproduce asexually (forming resting phycoma cysts), and Chlorophyceae, which reproduce sexually (zygotic cysts). Some species had a complex life cycle, with alternating vegetative and reproductive generations that differed morphologically. Based on acritarch records from the Baltica palaeocontinent, of which the Lukati Formation assemblage is a part, and the global PhytoPal Taxonomic Database (PhytoPal Project, Leverhulme Trust, Leicester University, 2003-2006), the early Cambrian diversification of phytoplankton is reviewed. The initial Cambrian diversification, and a recovery after the end-Ediacaran extinction, was rapid and exhibited a stepwise pattern of radiation episodes covering short intervals equivalent to biochrons lasting a few million years, estimated from the numerical ages of the strata containing them and the current time scale of the early Cambrian. However, the first appearance datum (FAD) of new species within the biozones/biochrons appears in a succession rather than at one stratigraphical level, indicating true biological speciations. The only genera surviving from the Proterozoic Eon are Leiosphaeridia, Tasmanites, Pterospermella and Pterospermopsimorpha; these are Lazarus genera radiating new species in the early Cambrian. All other Cambrian genera and species are new, morphologically innovative, and much smaller.

Description: Sedimentary hydrocarbon remnants of eukaryotic C26–C30 sterols can be used to reconstruct early algal evo- lution. Enhanced C29 sterol abundances provide algal cell membranes a density advantage in large temperature fluctuations. Here, we combined a literature review with new analyses to generate a comprehensive inventory of unambiguously syngenetic steranes in Neoproterozoic rocks. Our results show that the capacity for C29 24- ethyl-sterol biosynthesis emerged in the Cryogenian, that is, between 720 and 635 million years ago during the Neoproterozoic Snowball Earth glaciations, which were an evolutionary stimulant, not a bottleneck. This bio- chemical innovation heralded the rise of green algae to global dominance of marine ecosystems and highlights the environmental drivers for the evolution of sterol biosynthesis. The Cryogenian emergence of C29 sterol biosynthesis places a benchmark for verifying older sterane signatures and sets a new framework for our understanding of early algal evolution.
