    Notes: Summary A pilot study on the prevalence of neurological disorders in Sicily was carried out with a protocol nerve previously used in Italy. A screening questionnaire was administered to 1,601 subjects of a community, designed to identify patients with cerebrovascular diseases, epilepsy, extrapyramidal syndromes, peripheral neuropathies, migraine and intracranial neoplasms. Of 262 subjects who were identified as likely to be suffering from neurological illness, 248 (94.6%) were examined by a neurologist. Of these, 8.9% were found to be normal, 46.8% were suffering from non-neurological diseases, 44.3% had one or more neurological diseases (prevalence of 6.8%). This pilot study proved to be a good starting-point for a future major survey.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommario In questo studio, abbiamo esaminato l'incidenza di primo ictus cerebrale in tre comuni siciliani nei tre anni dal 1984 al 1987. L'identificazione dei casi è avvenuta mediante due strategie: uno studio di prevalenza porta-aporta in due fasi ed uno studio dei certificati di morte. Soltanto casi di primo ictus cerbrale avvenuti durante l'intervallo di tempo dello studio sono stati considerati e le diagnosi sono state assegnate sulla base di criteri clinici definiti. Abbiamo rilevato 138 soggetti the hanno avuto un primo ictus cerebrale a partire da un totale di 73 488 annipersona; il tasso di incidenza medio (nuovi casi per 1000 soggetti per anno) era 1,9 nella popolazione totale e 4,8 nei soggetti al di sopra dei 39 anni di età. L'incidenza aumentava rapidamente con l'età ed era simile in uomini e donne. L'incidenza era simile nei tre comuni inclusi nello studio. Il tasso di letalità complessivo era 35% a 30 giorni e 22% ad una settimana. La sopravvivenza dopo l'ictus era simile in uomini e donne ma era più lunga nei pazienti giovani rispetto a quelli più anziani al momento dell'ictus. Il confronto con studi precedenti suggerisce l'assenza di grandi differenze nell'incidenza di ictus all'interno dell'Italia.
    Notes: Abstract We investigated the incidence of first-ever stroke in three Sicilian municipalities over the years 1984–1987. Case ascertainment involved two approaches: a doorto-door two-phase prevalence survey and a study of death certificates. Only first-ever strokes occurring within the study time interval were included, and diagnoses were based on specified criteria. We found 138 subjects who had experienced a first stroke over 73 488 person-years; the average incidence rate (new cases per 1000 population per year) was 1.9 overall, 1.7 in men, and 2.1 in women. Incidence increased steeply with age and was similar in men and women. Incidence was similar in the three study municipalities. The overall case-fatality rate was 35% at 30 days and 22% at one week. Survival after stroke was similar in men and women but better in younger compared to older stroke patients. Comparisons with previous studies suggest the absence of major geographic variations in stroke incidence within Italy.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommario Nell'ambito di un'indagine porta a porta su alcune comuni malattie neurologiche in Sicilia (Progetto SNES), abbiamo somministrato un questionario di screening mirato sui sintomi ed un breve esame neurologico allo scopo di individuare i pazienti epilettici. Tutti i soggetti effettivamente residenti al 1° novembre 1987 (giorno di prevalenza) nel comune di Riposto sono stati studiati (N=9956). Quelli positivi al questionario o con una diagnosi precedente di epilessia sono stati accuratamente valutati da un neurologo e quindi rivalutati per la diagnosi definitiva da un gruppo di neurologi esperti. Il tasso di prevalenza grezzo di tutte le epilessie (attive e non attive) à risultato di 3,21/1000; la prevalenza delle sole forme attive era di 2,71/1000. Su 27 casi di epilessia attiva, 16 erano affetti da crisi generalizzate tonico-cloniche, 4 da assenze, 4 da crisi parziali complesse. Tutti tranne due pazienti erano in trattamento con farmaci antiepilettici, la gran parte con fenobarbital. Il nostro tasso di prevalenza è inferiore a quelli riportati dalla maggior parte degli autori, ma molto vicino ai valori riscontrati in altri comuni siciliani.
    Notes: Abstract In a door-to-door survey of common neurological disorders in Sicily (SNES Project), we administered a screening symptoms questionnaire and a brief neurological examination to detect epileptic patients. All of the subjects effectively resident in the community of Riposto on 1 November 1987 (prevalence day) were investigated (n=9956). The subjects with a positive questionnaire or a previous diagnosis of epilepsy were extensively examined by a neurologist and then definitively classified for epilepsy by a panel of senior neurologists. The crude prevalence of active and non-active epilepsy was 3.21/1000; the prevalence of active epilepsy alone was 2.71/1000. Of the 27 active cases, sixteen were affected by genralized tonic-clonic seizures, four by absences and four by complex partial attacks. All except two were being treated with antiepileptic drugs, most with phenobarbital. Our prevalence rate is lower than that reported by most authors, but similar to the rates in other Sicilian communities.

    Description: In subduction zones, seismic slip at shallow crustal depths can lead to the generation of tsunamis. Large slip displacements during tsunamogenic earthquakes are attributed to the low coseismic shear strength of the fluid-saturated and non-lithified clay-rich fault rocks. However, because of experimental challenges in confining these materials, the physical processes responsible for the coseismic reduction in fault shear strength are poorly understood. Using a novel experimental setup, we measured pore fluid pressure during simulated seismic slip in clay-rich materials sampled from the deep oceanic drilling of the Pāpaku thrust (Hikurangi subduction zone, New Zealand). Here, we show that at seismic velocity, shear-induced dilatancy is followed by pressurisation of fluids. The thermal and mechanical pressurisation of fluids, enhanced by the low permeability of the fault, reduces the energy required to propagate earthquake rupture. We suggest that fluid-saturated clay-rich sediments, occurring at shallow depth in subduction zones, can promote earthquake rupture propagation and slip because of their low permeability and tendency to pressurise when sheared at seismic slip velocities.

    Description: Abstract: On Kodiak Island (Alaska), decimeter-thick black fault rocks (BFR) are at the core of 10's meters-thick foliated cataclasites. Cataclasites belong to mélanges regarded as paleo-décollement active at 12-14 km depth and 230-260oC. Each black layer is mappable for tens of meters along strike. The BFR feature a complex layering made at microscale by alternation of granular and crystalline microtextures, composed of micron-scale sub-rounded quartz and plagioclase in an ultrafine, phyllosilicate-rich matrix. In the crystalline microlayers, tabular zoned microlites of plagioclase make much of the matrix. No such feldspars are found in the cataclasite. We interpret crystalline microlayers as pseudotachylytes. The granular microlayers show higher grain size variability, crushed microlites and textures typical of fluidization and granular flow deformation. Crosscutting relationships between granular and crystalline microlayers include flow and intrusion structures and mutual brittle truncation. This suggests that each 10's centimeter-thick composite BFR record multiple pulses of seismic slip. In each pulse, ultracomminuted fluidized material and friction melt formed and deformed together in a ductile fashion. Brittle truncation by another pulse occurred after solidification of the friction melt and the fluidized rock. XRPD and XRF analyses show that BFR have similar mineral composition and chemical content as the cataclasites. The observed systematic chemical differences cannot be explained by bulk or preferential melting of any of the cataclasite components. The presence of an open, fluid-infiltrated system with BFR later alteration is suggested. The geochemical results indicate that these subduction-related pseudotachylytes, differ from those typically described in crystalline rocks and other tectonic settings.

    Description: Slow slip events (SSEs) at the northern Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand, are among the best-documented shallow SSEs on Earth. International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 375 was undertaken to investigate the processes and in situ conditions that underlie subduction zone SSEs at the northern Hikurangi Trough by (1) coring at four sites, including an active fault near the deformation front, the upper plate above the high-slip SSE sourc e region, and the incoming sedimentary succession in the Hikurangi Trough and atop the Tūranganui Knoll Seamount, and (2) installing borehole observatories in an active thrust near the deformation front and in the upper plate overlying the slow slip source region. Logging-while-drilling (LWD) data for this project were acquired as part of Expedition 372 (26 November 2017-4 January 2018; see th e Expedition 372 Preliminary Report for further details on the LWD acquisition program). Northern Hikurangi subduction margin SSEs recur every 1-2 years and thus provide an ideal opportunity to monitor deformation and associated changes in chemical and physical properties throughout the slow slip cycle. Sampling of material from the sedimentary section and oceanic basement of the subducting plate reveals the rock properties, composition, lithology, and structural character of material that is transported downdip into the SSE source region. A recent seafloor geodetic experiment raises the possibility that SSEs at northern Hikurangi may propagate all the way to the trench, indicating that the shallow thrust fault zone targeted during Expedition 375 may also lie in the SSE rupture area. Hence, sampling at this location provides insights into the composition, physical properties, and architecture of a shallow fault that may host slow slip. Expedition 375 (together with the Hikurangi subduction LWD component of Expedition 372) was designed to address three fundamental scientific objectives: (1) characterize the state and composition of the incoming plate and shallow plate boundary fault near the trench, which comprise the protolith and initial conditions for fault zone rock at greater depth and which may itself host shallow slow slip; (2) characterize material properties, thermal regime, and stress conditions in the upper plate above the core of the SSE source region; and (3) install observatories at an active thrust near the deformation front and in the upper plate above the SSE source to measure temporal variations in deformation, temperature, and fluid flow. The observatories will monitor volumetric strain (via pore pressure as a proxy) and the evolution of physical, hydrological, and chemical properties throughout the SSE cycle. Together, the coring, logging, and observatory data will test a suite of hypotheses about the fundamental mechanics and behavior of SSEs and their relationship to great earthquakes along the subduction interface.

    Description: Subduction of mid-ocean ridges is a common feature in recent convergent margins, but is rarely documented in Proterozoic to Paleozoic orogenic belts. Here we describe evidence for ridge-trench interaction in the deeply eroded late Neoproterozoic Damara orogenic belt, central Namibia. The earliest interaction is indicated by primary intrusive contacts between amphibolite facies mid-ocean ridge metabasalts and trench metasediments. U-Pb zircon ages of 550–540 Ma from syntectonic granites in the forearc indicate the timing of partial melting and mafic underplating of the prism in response to ridge subduction. The thermal peak in the Damara belt, associated widespread granitic and alkalic plutonism, and hydrothermal activity coincide with the waning stages of tectonism at 530–520 Ma and are interpreted to indicate slab window widening and slab delamination. We suggest that the proposed two-stage thermal evolution of the Damara belt, comprising latest Neoproterozoic ridge subduction and early Cambrian slab delamination, represents a fingerprint of ridge subduction in ancient orogens.
