    Beschreibung: Thermokarst lakes formed across vast regions of Siberia and Alaska during the last deglaciation and are thought to be a net source of atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide during the Holocene epoch1, 2, 3, 4. However, the same thermokarst lakes can also sequester carbon5, and it remains uncertain whether carbon uptake by thermokarst lakes can offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Here we use field observations of Siberian permafrost exposures, radiocarbon dating and spatial analyses to quantify Holocene carbon stocks and fluxes in lake sediments overlying thawed Pleistocene-aged permafrost. We find that carbon accumulation in deep thermokarst-lake sediments since the last deglaciation is about 1.6 times larger than the mass of Pleistocene-aged permafrost carbon released as greenhouse gases when the lakes first formed. Although methane and carbon dioxide emissions following thaw lead to immediate radiative warming, carbon uptake in peat-rich sediments occurs over millennial timescales. We assess thermokarst-lake carbon feedbacks to climate with an atmospheric perturbation model and find that thermokarst basins switched from a net radiative warming to a net cooling climate effect about 5,000 years ago. High rates of Holocene carbon accumulation in 20 lake sediments (47 ± 10 grams of carbon per square metre per year; mean ± standard error) were driven by thermokarst erosion and deposition of terrestrial organic matter, by nutrient release from thawing permafrost that stimulated lake productivity and by slow decomposition in cold, anoxic lake bottoms. When lakes eventually drained, permafrost formation rapidly sequestered sediment carbon. Our estimate of about 160 petagrams of Holocene organic carbon in deep lake basins of Siberia and Alaska increases the circumpolar peat carbon pool estimate for permafrost regions by over 50 per cent (ref. 6). The carbon in perennially frozen drained lake sediments may become vulnerable to mineralization as permafrost disappears7, 8, 9, potentially negating the climate stabilization provided by thermokarst lakes during the late Holocene.

    Notizen: Vasoactive metabolites deriving from arachidonic acid (AA) have been considered as putative mediators in the pathogenesis of various types of headache. In the present study we therefore compare the ability to synthesize AA containing precursor phospholipids in polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) from healthy controls and cluster headache patients. 3.7% ± 1.4 (mean ± SD) of the (1-14C)AA incorporated into total PMN glycerophospholipids (GPLs) was recovered in the phosphatidylserine (PS) in a group of cluster headache patients (n = 12). This was almost twice the value of 1.9% ± 0.8% found in a corresponding group of 24 healthy controls (p 〈 0.001). A significant decrease in the incorporation of (1-14C)AA into phosphatidylcholine (PC) (p 〈 0.01) and an increase in the incorporation of (1-14C)AA into phosphatidyletanolamine (PE) (p 〈 0.05) were also found in cluster headache patients when compared to the control group. The increased incorporation of (1-14C)AA into PS in PMNs from this group of patients is interesting because PS plays an important role in the activation of protein kinase C, an enzyme involved in transmembrane signalling. The clinical implications of the present findings in cluster headache, if any, cannot yet be defined.

    Notizen: Near-field scanning optical microscopy is used to image electroluminescence from three and ten quantum-well (QW) indium gallium nitride based laser diodes. Facet cross sections are imaged with a spatial resolution of 〈100 nm, below and above the lasing threshold. Observation of spatially resolved spectra near the active region reveals compositional fluctuations as well as absorption and reemission of the lasing mode. Single-mode emission is observed for narrow (3 and 5 μm wide) 3 QW laser bars. Near-field measurements show a relationship between modal emission, waveguide structure, and lateral device size. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Pulsed operation of in-plane laser diodes with InGaN multiple quantum well active regions was achieved. For uncoated chemically assisted ion beam etched facets, we obtained threshold current densities as low as 10.6 kA/cm2. The external differential quantum efficiency dependence on bar length was used to determine the internal optical loss and internal quantum efficiency of these devices and to calculate the modal gain in the device as a function of the terminal current density. Values of facet reflection were determined by a self-consistent analysis. We have measured 90 cm−1 of modal gain and estimate material gain exceeding 900 cm−1, at 20 kA/cm2. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Optical gain spectra of InGaN multiquantum well laser diode wafers having Si-doped or undoped InGaN barriers were compared. Although evidence for effective band-gap inhomogeneity was found in both structures, the wells with the Si-doped barriers exhibited a smaller Stokes-like shift. Si doping suppressed emergence of a secondary amplified spontaneous emission peak at 3.05 eV, which was uncoupled with the primary one at 2.93 eV. Furthermore Si doping reduced the threshold power density required to obtain the stimulated emission. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In the growth of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) structures, a novel defect (called the "V-defect") initiates at threading dislocations in one of the first quantum wells in a MQW stack. This defect is common to almost all InGaN MQW heterostructures. The nature of the V-defect was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM (STEM), and low-temperature cathodoluminescence (CL) on a series of In0.20Ga0.80N/GaN MQW samples. The structure of the V-defect includes buried side-wall quantum wells (on the {101¯1} planes) and an open hexagonal inverted pyramid which is defined by the six {101¯1} planes. Thus, in cross section this defect appears as an open "V". The formation of the V-defect is kinetically controlled by reduced Ga incorporation on the pyramid walls ({101¯1} planes). The V-defect is correlated with the localized excitonic recombination centers that give rise to a long-wavelength shoulder in photoluminescence (PL) and CL spectra. This long-wavelength shoulder has the following characteristics: (i) its intensity is correlated with the side-wall quantum wells; (ii) the temperature independence of the full width at half maximum strongly supports a localized exciton recombination process. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Aim : To compare the safety and efficacy of pantoprazole and ranitidine in maintaining erosive oesophagitis healing.Methods : Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease patients (349) with endoscopically documented healed erosive oesophagitis (grade 0 or 1) were randomly assigned to receive pantoprazole (10, 20 or 40 mg/q.d.s.) or ranitidine (150 mg/b.d.). Erosive oesophagitis status was assessed endoscopically at months 1, 3, 6 and 12 or when relapse symptoms appeared (relapse = reappearance of erosive oesophagitis grade 2 within 12 months). Symptom-free days were also assessed.Results : Pantoprazole 20- and 40-mg were significantly more effective than ranitidine in maintaining healing regardless of initial erosive oesophagitis grade. Response was dose-related. After 12 months 78, 55, 46 and 21% of patients remained healed (40-, 20-, 10-mg pantoprazole and ranitidine). Pantoprazole 40-mg produced significantly more symptom-free days (83%) than ranitidine (58%). Heartburn-free days/nights were significantly higher with pantoprazole 40-mg (92 and 93%) than ranitidine (73 and 77%). The most frequent reason for discontinuation, unsatisfactory efficacy, occurred most often with ranitidine (P 〈 0.001).Conclusion : Once-daily pantoprazole therapy prevented relapse of healed erosive oesophagitis more effectively than ranitidine and with fewer heartburn days. Response to pantoprazole was dose-related. Pantoprazole 40-mg was the most effective regimen and consistent in maintaining erosive oesophagitis healing with a good safety and tolerability profile.
