Notes: An analysis of phase locking between two high power microwave oscillators with large injection power ratios has been developed by making use of the concept of a lumped circuit, which makes it possible to predict the locked relative phases more accurately and provides a more suitable phase-locking condition for most practical cases. Sample phase calculations starting from different initial conditions are presented, which show that the conventional phase-locking theory is sufficient only when the frequency difference between the oscillators is small enough, however, it must be modified when the frequency difference and the power ratios are both large. Moreover, it has also been found that a longer locked time and a wider locking bandwidth are expected by the new results than those obtained by the conventional phase-locking theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a novel coaxial wiggler, the hybrid coaxial wiggler, is proposed. The analytical formula for magnetic field of the wiggler is derived, and the beam propagation properties are investigated numerically. The results show that the hybrid coaxial wiggler is scalable to small periods with high field amplitude, high beam current acceptance, and excellent transverse focusing properties.

Description: The sea state of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas is controlled by the wind forcing and the amount of ice-free water available to generate surface waves. Clear trends in the annual duration of the open water season and in the extent of the seasonal sea ice minimum suggest that the sea state should be increasing, independent of changes in the wind forcing. Wave model hindcasts from four selected years spanning recent conditions are consistent with this expectation. In particular, larger waves are more common in years with less summer sea ice and/or a longer open water season, and peak wave periods are generally longer. The increase in wave energy may affect both the coastal zones and the remaining summer ice pack, as well as delay the autumn ice-edge advance. However, trends in the amount of wave energy impinging on the ice-edge are inconclusive, and the associated processes, especially in the autumn period of new ice formation, have yet to be well-described by in situ observations. There is an implicit trend and evidence for increasing wave energy along the coast of northern Alaska, and this coastal signal is corroborated by satellite altimeter estimates of wave energy.

Description: Background. Osteopontin (OPN) has been proved to be associated with allergic airway inflammation. However, the roles of OPN and its regulation in childhood allergic rhinitis (AR) are poorly understood. Objective. This study aims to evaluate the expression of OPN and miR-181a in children with AR and their association with Th1/Th2 immune response. Methods. Children who suffered from AR were included along with control subjects. Serum was collected to examine the level of OPN and Th1/Th2 cytokines by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the level of miR-181a by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Results. Children with AR had significantly higher serum levels of OPN and lower serum levels of miR-181a than healthy controls. Furthermore, serum levels of OPN were positively correlated with Th2 cytokine and negatively correlated with Th1 cytokine. On the contrary, miR-181a level had a negative correlation with IL-4/IL-5 and positive correlation with IFN-/IL-12. More importantly, there was also significant negative correlation between OPN and miR-181a. Conclusion. The OPN protein and miR-181a levels may serve as predictors of disease severity in childhood AR and appear to be promising targets for modulating AR.
