    Notes: Abstract  The Drosophila melanogaster small heat-shock gene hsp27 carries the canonic ecdysone response element (EcRE) at -537. This EcRE has been used extensively both in cultured cells and in vitro for studies of the ecdysone response. We have characterised the developmental expression of hsp27 in wild-type larval and prepupal salivary glands in parallel with that of the E74B and E74A primary ecdysone response transcripts, which are induced in the mid and late third larval instar by a minor and major increase in ecdysone titre respectively. The induction of hsp27 occurs between these two events in larvae and in parallel with that of E74A in prepupae. Transcript levels are severely reduced in ecd1 and dor 22 (deep orange) mutant larvae but are only moderately reduced in larvae mutant for the Broad-Complex allele br t435 . By culturing salivary glands of different ages with low (1.8×10–8 M) or high (1.8×10–6 M) concentrations of hormone, we show that the response of an EcRE varies during development and that the timing of the response cannot be predicted solely from its apparent strength in cell line analyses.

    Notes: Summary Classically meningiomas present and evolve with a progressive course. Meningiomas manifest themselves mainly in middle and old age when the incidence of strokes is higher. The authors report three instances of meningioma with acute haemorrhagic onset. The clinical picture of our cases consisted of subarachnoid bleeding, subdural heamatoma and intracerebral haemorrhage respectively. The diagnostic difficulties encountered when assessing these patients are discussed. The current literature regarding meningioma associated with haemorrhage is reviewed. One of our cases seems to be the fisrt reported case of subarachnoid haemorrhage originating from a meningioma of the petrous bone.

    Notes: Abstract Arachnoid cysts situated in the middle cranial fossa constitute the largest group of this type of lesion. Their origin has been the subject of debate since they were first described. There is still controversy as to whether they originate directly from the meninges adjacent to the temporal pole or whether partial agenesis of the temporal lobe favours secondary formation of the cyst. We assessed the morphology of the temporal lobe and the bulging of the squamous temporal bone. “Paradoxical changes” in adjacent-bone, described as very rare findings in arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa, were common in our study and suggest, in association with direct signs of temporal atrophy, that this atrophy precedes, or is at least coexistent with, the formation of the cyst. The importance of being able to determine the origin of the cyst lies in its being a factor to assess as regards treatment.

    Notes: Abstract Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), an invariably fatal dementing illness, affects patients in middle and old age (sporadic form). However, the association of CJD with certain treatments (iatrogenic form) has been described in younger patients. The clinical onset of the two forms seems to differ; in the iatrogenic form a high frequency of the ataxic CJD variant has been reported. Nowadays, a definitive diagnosis of CJD is exclusively histological. We present five cases of CJD, one sporadic and the others iatrogenic, following dura mater grafts and analyse their CT and MRI features. CT typically demonstrates brain atrophy, generally progressive, but in sporadic CJD midfield MRI also showed abnormal signal, with predominant deep grey matter involvement. The use of narrow windows with proton-density sequences may reveal subtle cortical signal abnormalities not clearly visible with conventional windows. The early demonstration of these changes, in the appropriate clinical context, may suggest CJD and this supports the use of mid- or high magnetic fields in the diagnosis of CJD and other forms of dementia. In our cases of iatrogenic CJD, low-field MRI did not reveal more than the progressive atrophy displayed by CT, and raises the question on the one hand of possible differences, based on imaging, from the sporadic form, and on the other of the lack of sensitivity of low-field magnets to signal changes in CJD.

    Notes: Abstract For oceanic birds like king penguins, a major constraint is the separation of foraging areas from the breeding colony, largely because swimming increases foraging costs. However, the relationship between foraging strategy and breeding stage has been poorly investigated. Using time-depth recorders, we studied the diving behaviour of two groups of king penguins that were either incubating or brooding chicks at Crozet Islands (Southern Indian Ocean) at the same period of the year. Although birds with chicks had the highest predicted energy demand, they made foraging trips half as long as incubating birds (6 vs. 14 days) and modified their time and depth utilisation. Birds with chicks dived deeper during daylight (mean maximum depth of 280 m vs. 205 m for those incubating). At night, birds with chicks spent twice as much time diving as those incubating, but birds at both stages never dived beyond 30 m. Movements to greater depths by brooding birds are consistent with the vertical distribution of myctophid fish which are the main prey. As chick provisioning limits trip duration, it is suggested that it is more efficient for parents to change their diving patterns rather than to restrict their foraging range.

    Notes: Abstract The authors report the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented with a parietal midline subscalp lesion. Skull radiographs demonstrated a lytic lesion surrounded by a sclerotic rim that resembled a dermoid cyst of the cranium. Histopathological analysis proved that the lesion was a benign osteoblastoma. As in other calvarial masses of uncertain nature, after diagnostic work-up, we recommend surgical excision both for diagnosis and for treatment.
