    Description: The ability of German regional climate Model (REMO) to simulate the near surface air temperature and total precipitation over China in 1989-2008 were assessed with the use of Taylor diagrams and bias analysis. Comparing the simulated near surface air temperature with a 20-year observational dataset from China, the spatial correlation coefficient was relatively high (0.94). However, the spatial correlation coefficient for total precipitation was relatively low (about 0.42). The near surface air temperature simulated by REMO was higher than the observed values in most part of China, showing a bias range within 4 C. Significant cold bias of about -4 to -2 C occurred over most of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In terms of total precipitation, the simulated values were higher than the observed ones, with biases evenly distributed. The annual mean bias in most part of China was within 300 mm. Except for the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, South China and Southwest China, REMO accurately reflected the distribution of near surface air temperature and total precipitation. REMO represented the temperature and total precipitation well in North China and Northeast China. REMO simulations were quite close to observations for near surface air temperature in summer and total precipitation in winter. REMO still needs to be improved in complex terrain areas.

    Description: A tetranuclear neutral MRI contrast agent, (Gd-DO3A) 4 -TPM, was designed and synthesized by appending four Gd-DO3A moieties upon the tetraphenylmethane derivatives. The longitudinal relaxivity of (Gd-DO3A) 4 -TPM measured at 20 MHz, 37 °C and pH 7.0 is 6.8 mM –1 ·s –1 per Gd atom, which is one-fold higher than that of the mononuclear clinical agent [Gd(DOTA)(H 2 O)] – . In addition, the thermodynamic stability of (Gd-DO3A) 4 -TPM was higher than that of [Gd(DTPA)(H 2 O)] 2– . The luminescence lifetime study on the (Eu-DO3A) 4 -TPM analogue suggested that the complex contains one inner water molecule coordinated to each Ln 3+ ion. The cytotoxicity study of (Gd-DO3A) 4 -TPM indicated quite low toxicity.

    Description: Photomultiplication-type ultraviolet (UV)/visible photodetectors (PDs) are demonstrated in an electrodeposited Cu 2 O/C 60 hybrid structure. These simple organic/inorganic hybrid PDs exhibit external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 1.1 × 10 4 % under illumination of 365 nm UV light at −3 V, indicating a large gain of photocurrent for these devices. Such an EQE is one of the highest values among the reported organic/inorganic hybrid PDs at the same voltage. Cu 2 O and C 60 are found to play different roles in realizing the photomultiplication. Copper vacancies are proposed as the defects in the electrodeposited Cu 2 O layers, which can trap photogenerated holes. Such trapped holes will trigger the injection of multiple electrons and hence result in the photocurrent gain of the devices while C 60 primarily acts as a light absorption media to provide free holes.

    Description: The bacteriophage ϕ29 tail possesses a pore-forming loop for cell membrane penetration Nature 534, 7608 (2016). doi:10.1038/nature18017 Authors: Jingwei Xu, Miao Gui, Dianhong Wang & Ye Xiang Most bacteriophages are tailed bacteriophages with an isometric or a prolate head attached to a long contractile, long non-contractile, or short non-contractile tail. The tail is a complex machine that plays a central role in host cell recognition and attachment, cell wall and membrane penetration, and viral genome ejection. The mechanisms involved in the penetration of the inner host cell membrane by bacteriophage tails are not well understood. Here we describe structural and functional studies of the bacteriophage ϕ29 tail knob protein gene product 9 (gp9). The 2.0 Å crystal structure of gp9 shows that six gp9 molecules form a hexameric tube structure with six flexible hydrophobic loops blocking one end of the tube before DNA ejection. Sequence and structural analyses suggest that the loops in the tube could be membrane active. Further biochemical assays and electron microscopy structural analyses show that the six hydrophobic loops in the tube exit upon DNA ejection and form a channel that spans the lipid bilayer of the membrane and allows the release of the bacteriophage genomic DNA, suggesting that cell membrane penetration involves a pore-forming mechanism similar to that of certain non-enveloped eukaryotic viruses. A search of other phage tail proteins identified similar hydrophobic loops, which indicates that a common mechanism might be used for membrane penetration by prokaryotic viruses. These findings suggest that although prokaryotic and eukaryotic viruses use apparently very different mechanisms for infection, they have evolved similar mechanisms for breaching the cell membrane.
