    Description: We present 20 years of seawater inorganic carbon measurements collected along the western shelf and slope of the Antarctic Peninsula. Water column observations from summertime cruises and seasonal surface underway pCO2 measurements provide unique insights into the spatial, seasonal, and interannual variability in this dynamic system. Discrete measurements from depths 〉 2000 m align well with World Ocean Circulation Experiment observations across the time series and underline the consistency of the data set. Surface total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon data showed large spatial gradients, with a concomitant wide range of Ωarag (〈 1 up to 3.9). This spatial variability was mainly driven by increasing influence of biological productivity towards the southern end of the sampling grid and meltwater input along the coast towards the northern end. Large inorganic carbon drawdown through biological production in summer caused high near-shore Ωarag despite glacial and sea-ice meltwater input. In support of previous studies, we observed Redfield behavior of regional C / N nutrient utilization, while the C / P (80.5 ± 2.5) and N / P (11.7 ± 0.3) molar ratios were significantly lower than the Redfield elemental stoichiometric values. Seasonal salinity-based predictions of Ωarag suggest that surface waters remained mostly supersaturated with regard to aragonite throughout the study. However, more than 20 % of the predictions for winters and springs between 1999 and 2013 resulted in Ωarag 〈 1.2. Such low levels of Ωarag may have implications for important organisms such as pteropods. Even though we did not detect any statistically significant long-term trends, the combination of on\-going ocean acidification and freshwater input may soon induce more unfavorable conditions than the ecosystem experiences today.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of the specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and 119Sn Mössbauer spectra of Ce1−xGdxSn3 has been measured. An evolution from mixed valent, to enhanced paramagnetic, to spin glass, and finally to a magnetically ordered state is observed as one alloys from pure CeSn3 to GdSn3. The C/T curves show a strong upswing at the lowest temperatures for the enhanced paramagnetic systems with dilute Gd concentrations. In the spin-glass regime, the temperature where the cusp occurs in the zero-field cooled magnetic susceptibility data is lower than the temperature at which the Mössbauer line width starts broadening. For the magnetically ordered state, TN increases with increasing Gd concentration reaching 31 K for pure GdSn3.

    Notes: The electrical transport properties of CoSi2 and Co(SixGe1−x)2 thin films formed by solid state interaction and co-evaporation in the range of 4–300 K were studied. The Hall effect data indicate a hole carrier conduction in all samples. The rapid thermal annealed CoSi2 exhibits a typical metallic conduction with a residual resistivity of 3.3-μΩ-cm and room-temperature (RT) resistivity of 15 μΩ cm. The co-evaporated CoSi2 and Co(Si0.9Ge0.1)2 films after low temperature annealing up to 250 °C show a low resistivity of 70–80 μΩ cm at RT and change little down to 4 K. The hole carrier density of all the samples studied has values close to 2–3×1022 cm−3, while the carrier Hall mobility has large differences.

    Notes: A system which enables fast and reliable measurements of the dielectric constant over continuous microwave frequency ranges for both solid and liquid low-loss materials is described. The main thrust of this work is the application of the open-ended coaxial-line probe technique, which has been used previously for soft biological materials, to low-loss solid samples. Using the instrumentation and procedure presented here, the dielectric constant for low-loss solids can be measured absolutely to ±2%–3% with routine care. The uncertainty can be reduced by about a factor of 2 by averaging several measurements. It is also smaller for liquid samples. This application features the use of relatively simple and readily available microwave components. Also, it is shown that a simple empirical relationship can be used to obtain the bulk dielectric constant from samples of a material in the form of thin slabs. The experimental results which are presented here for kapton, Teflon, Corning glass No. 0211, soda lime glass, magnesium oxide, sapphire, silicon, alumina, and lanthanum aluminate, as well as carbon tetrachloride, compare favorably with existing literature values.

    Notes: This work addresses the effect of finite sample thickness on microwave dielectric constant measurements for thin, planar, low-loss samples using the open-ended coaxial-line probe method. Detailed measurements of the dielectric constant were carried out on a wide range of thicknesses of air samples which were backed by infinitely thick teflon and alumina dielectric media. The measurements were made at room temperature for various (50 Ω) coaxial-line dimensions, microwave frequencies 4–8 GHz, and power levels near a fraction of a mW. The results provide strong support for previously published theoretical calculations based on a boundary value problem which uses a spectral domain formulation for the aperture fields. From thin, planar samples, values of 10.4±0.5 and 25.9±1.3 were obtained at 5 GHz and 300 K for the bulk dielectric constant of MgO and LaAl2O3, respectively. The applicability of a simple empirical model based on an exponential fit is discussed.

    Notes: Photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies are employed to study undoped InGaP layers grown on GaAs (100) substrates at 750 °C by liquid phase epitaxy. There are four peaks in the photoluminescence spectrum in the energy range between 1.55 and 2.25 eV. Besides a bound exciton recombination, three longitudinal optical phonon replicas with one superimposed donor-acceptor emission are identified based upon their dependences of emission energies on temperature and excitation intensity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The avian retina and pineal gland contain autonomous circadian oscillators and photo-entrainment pathways, but the photopigment(s) that mediate entrainment have not been definitively identified. Melanopsin (Opn4) is a novel opsin involved in entrainment of circadian rhythms in mammals. Here, we report the cDNA cloning of chicken melanopsin and show its expression in retina, brain and pineal gland. Like the melanopsins identified in amphibians and mammals, chicken melanopsin is more similar to the invertebrate retinaldehyde-based photopigments than the retinaldehyde-based photopigments typically found in vertebrates. In retina, melanopsin mRNA is expressed in cells of all retinal layers. In pineal gland, expression was strong throughout the parenchyma of the gland. In brain, expression was observed in a few discrete nuclei, including the lateral septal area and medial preoptic nucleus. The retina and pineal gland showed distinct diurnal expression patterns. In pineal gland, melanopsin mRNA levels were highest at night at Zeitgeber time (ZT) 16. In contrast, transcript levels in the whole retina reached their highest levels in the early morning (ZT 0–4). Further analysis of melanopsin mRNA expression in retinal layers isolated by laser capture microdissection revealed different patterns in different layers. There was diurnal expression in all retinal layers except the ganglion cell layer, where heavy expression was localized to a small number of cells. Expression of melanopsin mRNA peaked during the daytime in the retinal pigment epithelium and inner nuclear layer but, like in the pineal, at night in the photoreceptors. Localization and regulation of melanopsin mRNA in the retina and pineal gland is consistent with the hypothesis that this novel photopigment plays a role in photic regulation of circadian function in these tissues.

    Notes: Observations in high bandwidth graded-index plastic optical fibers (GI POFs) are reported of strong mode coupling and its characteristic square root-like fiber length dependence of the optical pulse broadening. We have further found that the measured refractive index profile is not parabolic, but consists of two markedly different regions. Analysis of the index profile reveals that strong mode coupling increases the GI POF bandwidth from its profile-determined value of 0.43 GHz to its measured value of 3.0 GHz for 100 m. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The wild-rice-derived dominant gene Xa21 conferring multi-race resistance to bacterial blight and a fused Bt gene cry1Ab/cry1Ac conferring resistance to lepidopteran insects were individually introduced into the same genetic background of an elite indica cytoplasm male sterile (CMS) restorer line ‘Minghui 63′. The line showed the desirable insect- and disease-resistant phenotypes. To maximize the effect, the two genes were also pyramided into the same recipient plant of ‘Minghui 63’ by marker-assisted selection. After being subjected to natural infestation of leaf-folders and yellow stem borers and inoculation of Xoo strain mixtures, the pyramiding line and its derived hybrids showed high levels of resistance against both insect damage and disease. Furthermore, data from field trials demonstrated that the hybrids made by crossing this pyramiding line with the CMS lines ‘Zhenshan 97A’ and ‘Maxie A’ retained a similar level of yield under conditions without chemical spray, indicating that the pyramiding genes have a yield-stabilizing effect on the recipient line and its hybrids.
