    Notes: Abstract The St. Paul F.Z. is a large structural domain made up of multiple transform faults interrupted by several Intra-Transform Ridge (ITR) spreading segments. Two regions were studied in details by submersible: (1) The ITR short (〈20 km in length) segment near 0° 37′N–25° 27′W and 1° N–27° 42′W and (2) The St. Peter and St. Paul's Rocks (SPPR) massif located at 29° 25′W (¡3700 m depth). (1) The short ITR segments consist of a magma starved rift valley with recent volcanic activities at 4700 m depth. A geological profile made along the rift valley wall showed localized volcanics (basalts and dykes) which are believed to overlay and intrude the ultramafics. The geological setting and the high ultramafic/volcanic ratio suggest an extremely low magmatic supply and crustal-mantle uplift during lithospheric stretching and denudation. (2) The St. Peter and St. Paul's Rocks (SPPR) massif consists of a sigmoidal ridge within the active transform zone. The SPPR is divided into two different geological domains called the North and the South Ridges. The North Ridge consists of strongly tectonized fault scarps composed of banded and mylonitized peridotite, sporadic gabbros (3900–2500 m) and metabasalts (2700–1700 m). The South Ridge is less tectonized with undeformed, serpentinized spinel lherzolite (2000–1400 m) and basalts. Extensional motion and denudation accompanied by diapirism affected the South Ridge within a transform domain. Instead, the North Ridge was formed during an important strike-slip and faulting motion resulting in the uplifted portion of the St. Paul F.Z. transverse ridge. There is a regional compositional variation of the volcanics where E-MORBs and alkali basalts are produced on the SPPR massif and are comparable to the adjacent northern segments of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the other hand, N and T- MORBs collected from the eastern part of the St. Paul F.Z. (25° 27′ W IRT) are similar to the volcanics from the southern segments of the MAR. The peridotites exposed in these provinces (SPPR and ITR) are similar in their REE and trace element distribution. Different degrees (3–15%) of partial melting of a mixed composite mantle consisting of spinel and amphibole bearing lherzolite veined with 5–40% clinopyroxenite gave rise to the observed MORBs and alkali basalts.

    Notes: Abstract During the SOPACMAPS 2 crusie carried out by IFREMER (Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer) and ORSTOM (Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le dévelopement en Coopération) on theR/V L'Atalante, in the Central Solomon Arc area, multibeam bathymetric and imagery data and single-channel seismic reflection profiles were collected from an area of about 3500 km2, to evaluate regional tectonics. Structural data geophysical profiles interpretation provide evidence for left-lateral transtensional tectonics on the southern edge of the Central Solomon Trough. This transtensional deformation is represented by faulting, block tilting, and rhombohedral deformation. The regional geology and the analysis of the sedimentary cover allow us to demonstrate that this tectonic occurred in two different phases during Oligocene to Miocene and Pliocene to Pleistocene times.

L’adhérence de Staphylococcus aureusà des biomatériels utilisés dans la chirurgie orthopédique (polymetilmetacrilate, PMM; os frais; alliages d’acier et de titane) et du vitre a étéétudiée après 1, 2, 6, 24 et 48 h d’incubation, en utilisant des souches (72, 80 et 510) non productrices (NSP) d’exopolysaccharide (slime) et les variantes productrices d’exopolysaccharide (SP) de ces souches. Une méthode automatisée et rapide d’ATP-bioluminescence a été appliquée pour determiner la viabilité bactérienne. L’adhérence a été la plus basse dans le cas du PMM et de l’os et la plus haute dans le cas des metaux (les deux alliages se sont comportés de fa*on similaire). Après 6 h, l’adhérence s’est montrée significative, en dépendant aussi de la souche utilisée: la souche 72 a eu la moindre adhérence. Dans la majorité de cas, le degré d’adhérence des variantes NSP a été similaire à celle des controles et les variantes SP ont été plus adhérentes que les variantes NSP. Ces differences sont devenues maximales après 6 h ou 48 h, selon la souche et le matériel utilisés. La signification de ces observations peut se trouver dans le risque d’apparition des cellules SP dans une population NSP en présence de biomatériels particulaires utilisés dans la chirurgie orthopédique, en considerant que les cellules bactériennes SP peuvent avoir un haut degré d’adhérence et qu’elles peuvent mettre en danger la surveillance immunitaire post chirurgie et l’efficacité antibiotique à cause de la formation de biofilm sur les implants et les prothèses.
    Notes: Summary. The adherence of Staphylococcus aureus to biomaterials used in orthopaedic surgery (polymethylmethacrylate, fresh bone, steel and titanium alloys) and to glass was studied in vitro at 1, 2, 6, 24 and 48 h of incubation. Nonslime-producing strains (72, 80 and 510) and slime-producing variants of these strains were used. An automated and fast method of ATP-bioluminiscence was applied to determine bacterial viability. The lowest adherence corresponded to polymethylmethacrylate and bone, and the highest to metals. Significant adherence was detected in all cases after 6 h and was strain dependent, being lowest for strain 72. In most cases, adherence of nonslime-producing variants was not significant compared with controls, and slime-producing were more adherent than nonslime-producing variants. These differences were maximal at 6 h or 48 h, depending on the strain and the material. The findings suggest that the appearance of slime-producing cells within a given nonslime-producing bacterial population may jeopardise postoperative immune systems and antibiotic efficacy as a consequence of biofilm formation on implants and prostheses.

EPIDEMO is a program with a good relational database, which allows preliminary statistical analyses of data that can easily be expanded with more specific statistical options, and is compatible with other programs available on the market.     Description: Large uncertainties about the energy resource potential and role in global climate change of gas hydrates result from uncertainty about how much hydrate is contained in marine sediments. During Leg 204 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) to the accretionary complex of the Cascadia subduction zone, we sampled the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) from the seafloor to its base in contrasting geological settings defined by a 3D seismic survey. By integrating results from different methods, including several new techniques developed for Leg 204, we overcome the problem of spatial under-sampling inherent in robust methods traditionally used for estimating the hydrate content of cores and obtain a high-resolution, quantitative estimate of the total amount and spatial variability of gas hydrate in this structural system. We conclude that high gas hydrate content (30–40% of pore space or 20–26% of total volume) is restricted to the upper tens of meters below the seafloor near the summit of the structure, where vigorous fluid venting occurs. Elsewhere, the average gas hydrate content of the sediments in the gas hydrate stability zone is generally 〈2% of the pore space, although this estimate may increase by a factor of 2 when patchy zones of locally higher gas hydrate content are included in the calculation. These patchy zones are structurally and stratigraphically controlled, contain up to 20% hydrate in the pore space when averaged over zones ∼10 m thick, and may occur in up to ∼20% of the region imaged by 3D seismic data. This heterogeneous gas hydrate distribution is an important constraint on models of gas hydrate formation in marine sediments and the response of the sediments to tectonic and environmental change.

    Description: New seismic imaging and seismotectonic data from the southwest Iberian margin, the site of the present-day boundary between the European and African plates, reveal that active strike slip is occurring along two prominent lineaments that have recently been mapped using multibeam bathymetry. Multichannel seismic and subbottom profiler images acquired across the lineaments show seafloor displacements and active faulting to depths of at least 10 km and of a minimum length of 150 km. Seismic moment tensors show predominantly WNW–ESE right-lateral strike-slip motion, i.e., oblique to the direction of plate convergence. Estimates of earthquake source depths close to the fault planes indicate upper mantle (i.e., depths of 40–60 km) seismogenesis, implying the presence of old, thick, and brittle lithosphere. The estimated fault seismic parameters indicate that the faults are capable of generating great magnitude (Mw ≥ 8.0) earthquakes. Such large events raise the concomitant possibility of slope failures that have the potential to trigger tsunamis. Consequently, our findings identify an unreported earthquake and tsunami hazard for the Iberian and north African coastal areas.

    Description: Analog and numerical modeling experiments were carried out to investigate the tectonic interference between intersecting major active strike–slip and thrust faults in the Gulf of Cadiz (Africa–Eurasia plate boundary, offshore SW Iberia). The obtained results show that newly mapped tectonic features located in the fault intersection area (corner zone) consist mostly in oblique (dextral-reverse) faults that accommodate significant strain partitioning. Modeling of this corner-zone faults show that they have endured some degree of rotation, displaying successive evolving geometries and kinematics. Numerical modeling results further show that an interbedded shallow soft layer, accounting for a regional (Late Miocene) gravitational “Chaotic” unit, could explain the mild bathymetric expression of the fault pattern in the corner-zone. Moreover, a recognized depth discrepancy, between the (upper crust) interference fault-pattern and the (lithospheric mantle) seismicity, is interpreted as a manifestation of similar thrust–wrench tectonic interference at different lithospheric depths. Accordingly, an intermediate lower crust–upper mantle aseismic (i.e. softened) depth-domain could be explained by pervasive alteration/serpentinization, prompted by fluid percolation through fault-related fractures associated with the newly revealed corner zone fault-network. Overall obtained results reinforce the relevance of a thrust–wrench multi-rupture seismic scenario as the main cause for the moderate seismicity (Mw 〈 6.0) in the study area.

    Description: Deepwater landslides are often underestimated as potential tsunami triggers. The North Gorringe avalanche (NGA) is a large (∼80 km3 and 35 km runout) newly discovered and deepwater (2900 m to 5100 m depth) mass failure located at the northern flank of Gorringe Bank on the southwest Iberian margin. Steep slopes and pervasive fracturing are suggested as the main preconditioning factors for the NGA, while an earthquake is the most likely trigger mechanism. Near-field tsunami simulations show that a mass failure similar to the NGA could generate a wave 〉15 m high that would hit the south Portuguese coasts in ∼30 min. This suggests that deepwater landslides require more attention in geo-hazard assessment models of southern Europe, as well as, at a global scale, in seismically active margins.

    Description: The Bajo Segura fault zone (BSFZ) is the northern terminal splay of the Eastern Betic shear zone (EBSZ), a large left-lateral strike-slip fault system of sigmoid geometry stretching more than 450 km from Alicante to Almería. The BSFZ extends from the onshore Bajo Segura basin further into the Mediterranean Sea and shows a moderate instrumental seismic activity characterized by small earthquakes. Nevertheless, the zone was affected by large historical earthquakes of which the largest was the 1829 Torrevieja earthquake (IEMS98 X). The onshore area of the BSFZ is marked by active transpressive structures (faults and folds), whereas the offshore area has been scarcely explored from the tectonic point of view. During the EVENT-SHELF cruise, a total of 10 high-resolution single-channel seismic sparker profiles were obtained along and across the offshore Bajo Segura basin. Analysis of these profiles resulted in (a) the identification of 6 Quaternary seismo-stratigraphic units bounded by five horizons corresponding to regional erosional surfaces related to global sea level lowstands; and (b) the mapping of the active sub-seafloor structures and their correlation with those described onshore. Moreover, the results suggest that the Bajo Segura blind thrust fault or the Torrevieja left-lateral strike-slip fault, with prolongation offshore, could be considered as the source of the 1829 Torrevieja earthquake. These data improve our understanding of present deformation along the BSFZ and provide new insights into the seismic hazard in the area.
