    Notes: A high-resolution X-ray powder diffractometer is described with a source operating from 3 to 470 K. The optical design and mechanical arrangement of the diffractometer and the cryostat are optimized to provide easy (re)alignment procedures and high accuracy when the wavelength, the sample or the temperature is changed. The apparatus has been tested for peak-position accuracy, angular sensitivity and resolution (using standard materials). The tests assess the overall performance of the instrument, which is comparable to (or slightly better than) the best commercial instruments, but clearly excels over them because these performances are the same over the whole temperature range (3–470 K), allowing very accurate determination of the lattice parameters and crystal structure.

    Notes: A combination of the early approaches of the Debye model for specific heat and the Grüneisen theory of the thermal expansion of solids is used to interpolate the thermal variation of lattice parameters. From this analysis, relevant parameters such as the Debye temperature and the value of lattice parameters extrapolated at 0 K are deduced. This method and its limitations are reported. A program has been developed which can be readily used with any computer. Practical applications are given as an illustration. The method is first applied to an ideal cubic compound Na2Ca3Al2F14, which we propose as a standard for thermal expansion calibrations. Then, magnetoelastic phenomena, which occur at very low temperature, are displayed in cubic rare earth garnets by comparison of experimental and extrapolated data. The model is extended to an anisotropic hexagonal system, where the values of lattice parameters extrapolated at 0 K are determined within 10−5. Debye temperatures are estimated within a relative error of 10% and are in good agreement with those calculated from specific heat data; they prove the relevance of this easy method.

    Notes: Abstract. The effect of a static electric field on the crystal structure of $\alpha $ -quartz has been determined by Xray diffraction on single crystals. By a stroboscopic technique rocking curves are measured quasi simultaneously for zero field and for two opposite strong fields (28.8 kV/cm) applied in the direction of the crystallographic a-axis. The relative intensity-changes of high order reflections (i.e. sensitive to the core electrons) were measured and analysed by a least squares method technique. The analysis indicates that the bond distances Si-O are very little affected by the field, but both a deformation and a reorientation of the SiO4 tetrahedra are induced. The model is qualitatively in agreement with the small amplitudes of the induced polarisation and the piezoelectric coefficients.

    Notes: Abstract: We report a microwave study of the longitudinal and transverse transport properties of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6 in its normal phase. The contactless technique have provided a direct measurement of the temperature profile of the resistivity along the b' direction and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. A characteristic energy scale ( K) has been observed which delimits a transient regime from an insulating to a metallic behavior. This anomalous profile is discussed in terms of the onset of coherent transport properties along the b' direction below 40 K. This is also supported by the observation of a finite longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances only below 40 K, indicative of a two-dimensional regime. Below Tx, however, strong deviations with respect to a Fermi liquid behavior are evidenced.
