Notes: Internal stomach melanism was observed in two scalloped ribbonfish Zu cristatus from the Ligurian Sea. The phenomenon may help prevent advertizing the presence of this species after consumption of bioluminescent prey.

Notes: Abstract A quantum covariance function is introduced whose real and imaginary parts are related to the independent contributions to the uncertainty principle: noncommutativity of the operators and nonseparability. It is shown that factorizability of states is a sufficient but not necessary condition for separability. It is suggested that all quantum effects could be considered to be a consequence of nonseparability alone.

Notes: Abstract The quantum covariance function is calculated in some EPR-like systems for commuting observables in order to illustrate the nonseparability contribution to the incompatibility between commuting operators. It is shown that an attempt to eliminate the noncommutativity contribution to incompatibility fails in finite-dimensional cases and would require a nonseparable Hilbert space (nonseparable in the mathematical sense).

Description: Petrographic, minerochemical, and geothermobarometric data are reported for a suite of 19 spinel-lherzolite pargasite xenoliths hosted in a Quaternary basanitic lava flow from 20 the North-Western Ethiopian Plateau (Injibara, Lake Tana Province). Protogranular to 21 porphyroclastic (deformed) rocks show evidence of a modal metasomatism, represented 22 by a Cl-rich pargasitic amphibole, coupled with criptic enrichment in Fe and Al. 23 Equigranular rocks (granular) record a further cryptic metasomatism, represented by 24 enrichment in Fe, Al, Na, and depletion in Ni, Cr and Cl. Some xenoliths (transitional) 25 show intermediate textural and compositional characters, indicating that the granular 26 samples represent an evolution of the deformed ones. All xenoliths give the same P–T 27 equilibration conditions for Opx-Cpx pairs (947–1015 C and 1.3–2 GPa), but in 28 granular samples, recrystallised olivine and spinel record T about 100 C higher. Two 29 distinct metasomatic processes, probably connected with the emplacement of the Afar plume, are proposed. The first one is a pervasive modal metasomatism produced by 2 water-rich fluids. The latter is a non-pervasive cryptic metasomatism, probably con- 3 nected to migration of melts. The comparison among the mantle beneath the Ethiopi- 4 an Volcanic Plateau, the southern Main Ethiopian Rift and the central Main Ethiopian 5 Rift suggests a spatial heterogeneity in mantle processes, during asthenospheric 6 upwelling.

Description: The thick gypsum deposits formed in the Mediterranean Basin during the Messinian salinity crisis incorporate dense mazes of filamentous fossils, which were interpreted as algae or cyanobacteria, thus pointing to a shallow-marine subtidal or intertidal environment. The data presented here reveal that these filaments represent remains of colorless, vacuolated sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. This interpretation is supported by the presence of small crystal aggregates of iron sulfide (pyrite) and associated polysulfide within the filamentous fossils. Pyrite and polysulfide are considered to result from early diagenetic transformation of original zero-valent sulfur globules stored within the cells, which is a clade-diagnostic feature of living and degraded sulfur bacteria. In addition to filamentous fossils, the studied gypsum crystals contain remains of euryhaline and stenohaline diatoms and clay-rich aggregates interpreted as alteration products of marine snow floccules. This peculiar fossil assemblage reflects conditions of increased productivity in the water column, triggered by high fluxes of nutrients into the basin during phases of enhanced riverine runoff and freshwater discharge. This study confirms that gypsum evaporites have great potential to preserve the early stages of the taphonomic alteration of bacterial cells, shedding light on the paleoecology of ancient hypersaline environments.

Description: During the first stage of the Late Miocene Messinian salinity crisis (5.97–5.60 Ma), deposition of sulfates (the Primary Lower Gypsum) occurred in shallow silled peripheral subbasins of the Mediterranean undergoing restricted water exchange with the Atlantic Ocean. Fluid inclusions in Messinian selenite crystals from the Piedmont Basin (northwest Italy) have surprisingly low salinities (average of 1.6 wt% NaCl equivalent), suggesting that parent waters were depleted in Na + and Cl – compared to modern seawater. Modern gypsum from a Mediterranean salt work, in contrast, contains fluid inclusions with elevated salinities that match the normal evaporation trend expected for seawater. The salinity data indicate that the Messinian sulfate deposits from the Piedmont Basin formed from hybrid parent waters: seawater mixed with Ca 2+ and SO 4 2– enriched freshwaters that dissolved coeval marginal marine gypsum. Such mixed parent waters and complex recycling processes should be taken into account when explaining the genesis of other Messinian gypsum deposits across the Mediterranean Basin.
