    Description: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteriophage IME13 is a virulent phage with a large burst size, exceeding 3,000, much larger than that of any other stenotrophomonas phage reported before. It showed effective lysis of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia . Additionally, the phage IME13 developed at least three obviously different sizes of plaques when a single plaque was picked out and inoculated on a double-layer Luria broth agar plate with its host. Here we announce its complete genome and describe major findings from its annotation.

    Description: T7-like bacteriophages are a class of virulent bacteriophages which have a clearer genetic background and smaller genomes than other phages. In addition, it grows faster and is easier to culture than other phages. At present, the numbers of available T7-like bacteriophage genomes and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia genomes are small, and IME15 is the first T7-like virulent Stenotrophomonas phage whose sequence has been reported. It shows effective lysis of S. maltophilia . Here we announce its complete genome, and major findings from its annotation are described.

    Description: N4-like bacteriophages are a class of virulent Podoviridae phages for which few genome sequences are present in GenBank. IME11, a novel lytic Escherichia bacteriophage with a wide host range, was isolated, and the whole genome was sequenced. It has a circular double-stranded DNA genome of 72,570 bp. Genomic analysis showed that it resembles another Escherichia phage, vB_EcoP_G7C. Here we announce its complete genome and major findings from its annotation.

    Description: Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis), one kinds of valuable cultured fish species, show almost no morphological difference between male and female until sexual maturity. Here, we report the identification of sex-linked markers for the ayu, based on Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) generated from cultured fish (15 males and 15 females) by using 63 different primer combinations. Genomic fragments (n = 3733) were produced with a mean frequency of 59 bands per primer pair. A male-specific of 139 base pair band was amplified and converted to a sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR marker) designated as Ayu102. Six distinct genomic fragments were produced in 12 wild samples (6 males and 6 females). The fragments designated a, b, c, d, and e were detected only in males, and one fragment (f) was detected in both genders. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that fragments e and f were 96.67% identical. Ayu102 marker was detected in 45-d-old larvae, in both cultured and wild fish populations, and in offsprings generated by gynogenesis. Fragment e was detected in all males, and in only 6.7% of females in cultured fish. Data suggest that Ayu102 marker is a male-specific marker linked to the sex-determining locus of the male ayu and can be used for gender identification.

    Notes: In the present paper, a dislocation dipole model is employed to simulate the nucleation of microvoids at the interface between a thin film and a substrate. In this model, the accumulation of dislocation dipoles plays a major role in the formation of a microvoid. The total free energy of the system increases with the fatigue cycle number due to the increase in elastic strain energy. It is shown that there exists a critical fatigue cycle number beyond which the initial state of dislocation dipole accumulation becomes energetically unstable, and the energy of this state will be released by the formation of a microvoid at the interface. The study can provide not only the S–N curves for the initiation but also their dependence on material parameters such as the thickness of the film, the grain size of the substrate, the shear moduli ratio, etc. The coalescence of those microvoids is expected to be one of the mechanisms of delamination of the thin film from its substrate.

    Notes: Microscale contact between two solid surfaces induced by the liquid-bridging force is studied in the present article. Attention is focused on the interaction between the size of the contact area and the magnitude of the liquid-bridging force. The liquid-bridging force is related to the contact size and the other parameters, such as the filling angle, the contact angles, and the surface tension of the liquid, by solving the Laplace–Young equation. A singular integral equation for the coupled contact equilibrium problem is established and solved. Two approximate solutions for the same problem are also given and compared with the solution of the singular integral equation. Parametric study reveals the dependence of the semicontact width and the liquid-bridging force on the filling angle and the dimensionless group in the microscale contact. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Brillouin scattering has been performed on the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PNN) from 80 to 450 K across its Curie temperature. A diffuse phase transition from the paraelectric to ferroelectric phase, associated with a broad phonon frequency dip and a damping maximum, is observed around 200 K. A relaxation mode in the form of a broad Rayleigh wing, whose frequency is strongly temperature dependent above 190 K, is observed and analyzed based on a modified superparaelectric model. Dielectric studies of PNN have also been carried out at several measurement frequencies. The relation between the measurement frequency and the dielectric maximum temperature was analyzed on a modified Vogel–Fulcher model. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The nonequilibrium thermodynamics framework is tailored in the present paper to formulate the gas/liquid/solid system. In this system, there are two important issues, namely, the contact line motion and contact angle change, and shear stress singularity, during the dynamic evolution. Traditionally, the fluid mechanics approach has been applied to model these two issues. In the present paper, we applied a thermodynamics formulation to re-examine the first issue, i.e., the dynamic motion of the contact line and angle. It provides a new angle to understand the fundamentals of this classical problem. In order to verify the reliability of the present thermodynamics formulation, the capillary rise problem is revisited by using the formulation. A numerical result obtained based on the thermodynamics formulation is then compared with experimental test data. Excellent agreement between our analytical and experimental results gives us confidence for the future works on this approach. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The existence of two surface acoustic waves, the Rayleigh wave and the second leaky wave, on X-cut LiTaO3 has been detected using Brillouin scattering. Evidence of dispersion between ultrasonic and hypersonic velocities was found for both surface and bulk acoustic waves. Elastic constant values were determined from a simultaneous least-squares fit of the angular dispersion data for the longitudinal and the two transverse bulk acoustic modes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
