    Notes: Abstract A cyclonic gyre controls the advection of source waters into the formation areas of bottom water in the southern and western parts of the Weddell Sea and the subsequent transport of modified water masses to the north. Determination of the structure of the Weddell Gyre and of the associated transports was one of the objectives of the “Weddell Gyre Study” which began in September 1989 and ended in January 1993. The collected data set comprises records of moored current meters and profiles of temperature and salinity distributed along a transect between the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and Kapp Norvegia. The circulation pattern on the transect is dominated by stable boundary currents of several hundred kilometers width at the eastern and western sides of the basin. They are of comparable size on both sides and provide nearly 90% of the volume transport of the gyre which amounts to 29.5 Sv. In the interior, a weak anticyclonic cell of 800 km diameter transports less than 4 Sv. Apart from the continental slopes, the near-bottom currents flow at some locations in an opposite direction to those in the water column above, indicating a significant baroclinic component of the current field. The intensity of the boundary currents is subject to seasonal fluctuations, whereas in the interior, time scales from days to weeks dominate. The large-scale circulation pattern is persistent during the years 1989 to 1991. The heat transport into the southern Weddell Sea is estimated to be 3.48×1013 W. This implies an equivalent heat loss through the sea surface of 19 W m−2, as an average value for the area south of the transect. The derived salt transport is not significantly different from zero; consequently, the salt gain by sea ice formation has to compensate almost entirely the fresh water gain from the melting ice shelves and from precipitation. Estimation of water mass formation rates from the thermohaline differences of the inflow and outflow through the transect indicates that 6.0 Sv of Warm Deep Water are transformed into 2.6 Sv of Weddell Sea Bottom Water, into 1.2 Sv of Weddell Sea Deep Water, and into 2.2 Sv of surface water.

    Notes: Summary Between January and March 1989 during EPOS leg 3, a hydrographic survey was carried out in the southeastern Weddell Sea on transects across the continental shelf and slope off Kapp Norvegia and Halley Bay. This data set represents oceanographic conditions during Antarctic summer. Winter observations were obtained during the Winter Weddell Gyre Study in September and October 1989. During summer the water in the surface layer is relatively warm and of low salinity. In the area of Halley Bay exceptionally warm conditions were encountered with sea surface temperatures of nearly +1°C. Over the upper continental slope a frontal zone separates Eastern Shelf Water from Antarctic Surface Water in the near surface layer and from Warm Deep Water in the deeper layers. The horizontal pressure gradient associated with the front produces the high velocity core of the Antarctic Coastal Current. In winter Antarctic Surface Water is replaced by colder Winter Water of higher salinity. Measurements from current meters moored off Kapp Norvegia and Vestkapp are used to describe the mean features of the current field and its fluctuations. At Kapp Norvegia annual mean current speeds range from 10 to 20 cm/s. The geostrophic current shear indicates that the speed of the current core decreases towards Halley Bay. The currents show significant seasonal variations with strong interannual differences. These compare well with the variations of the wind field observed at the Georg von Neumayer Station. Superimposed are higher frequency fluctuations with an energetic range between 5 and 15 days which is found in the wind measurements as well. A considerable part of the current velocity variance is due to the tides. The oceanographic conditions are strongly influenced by the local bottom topography. A topographic rise at the shelf edge off Kapp Norvegia reduces horizontal advection and allows a patch of cold Winter Water to be preserved into the summer. In contrast, a patch of Warm Deep Water was found on the shelf of Halley Bay. This illustrates rather heterogeneous conditions in the near bottom layers due to differences in the exchange rate with the open ocean as well as with the near surface layers.

    Notes: Abstract An inverse model is applied for the analysis of hydrographic and current meter data collected on the repeat WOCE section SR4 in the Weddell Sea in 1989–1992. The section crosses the Weddell Sea cyclonic gyre from Kapp Norvegia to the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula. The concepts of geostrophy, conservation of planetary vorticity and hydrostatics are combined with advective balances of active and passive properties to provide a dynamically consistent circulation pattern. Our variational assimilation scheme allows the calculation of three-dimensional velocities in the section plane. Current speeds are small except along the coasts where they reach up to 12 cm/s. We diagnose a gyre transport of 34 Sverdrup which is associated with a poleward heat transport of 28 × 1012 W corresponding to an average heat flux of 15 Wm−2 in the Weddell Sea south of the transect. This exceeds the estimated local flux on the transect of 2 Wm−2. As the transect is located mostly in the open ocean, we conclude that the shelf areas contribute significantly to the ocean-atmosphere exchange and are consequently key areas for the contribution of the Weddell Sea to global ocean ventilation. Conversion of water masses occuring south of the section transform 6.6 ± 1.1 Sv of the inflowing warm deep water into approximately equal amounts of Weddell Sea deep water and Weddell Sea bottom water. The volume transport of surface water equals in the in-and outflow. This means that almost all newly formed surface water is involved in the deep and bottom water formation. Comparison with the results obtained by pure velocity interpolation combined with a hydrographic data subset indicates major differences in the derived salt transports and the water mass conversion of the surface water. The differences can be explained by deviations in the structure of the upper ocean currents to which shelf areas contribute significantly. Additionally a rigorous variance analysis is performed. When only hydrographic data are used for the inversion both the gyre transport and the poleward heat transport are substantially lower. They amount to less than 40% of our best estimate while the standard deviations of both quantities are 6.5 Sv and 37 × 1012 W, respectively. With the help of long-term current meter measurements these errors can be reduced to 2 Sv and 8 × 1012 W. Our result underlines the importance of velocity data or equivalent information that helps to estimate the absolute velocities.

    Notes: Abstract The water mass distribution in northern Fram Strait and over the Yermak Plateau in summer 1997 is described using CTD data from two cruises in the area. The West Spitsbergen Current was found to split, one part recirculated towards the west, while the other part, on entering the Arctic Ocean separated into two branches. The main inflow of Atlantic Water followed the Svalbard continental slope eastward, while a second, narrower, branch stayed west and north of the Yermak Plateau. The water column above the southeastern flank of the Yermak Plateau was distinctly colder and less saline than the two inflow branches. Immediately west of the outer inflow branch comparatively high temperatures in the Atlantic Layer suggested that a part of the extraordinarily warm Atlantic Water, observed in the boundary current in the Eurasian Basin in the early 1990s, was now returning, within the Eurasian Basin, toward Fram Strait. The upper layer west of the Yermak Plateau was cold, deep and comparably saline, similar to what has recently been observed in the interior Eurasian Basin. Closer to the Greenland continental slope the salinity of the upper layer became much lower, and the temperature maximum of the Atlantic Layer was occasionally below 0.5 °C, indicating water masses mainly derived from the Canadian Basin. This implies that the warm pulse of Atlantic Water had not yet made a complete circuit around the Arctic Ocean. The Atlantic Water of the West Spitsbergen Current recirculating within the strait did not extend as far towards Greenland as in the 1980s, leaving a broader passage for waters from the Atlantic and intermediate layers, exiting the Arctic Ocean. A possible interpretation is that the circulation pattern alternates between a strong recirculation of the West Spitsbergen Current in the strait, and a larger exchange of Atlantic Water between the Nordic Seas and the inner parts of the Arctic Ocean.

    Description: Records of currents and temperature on the upper edge of the continental slope off Sierra Leone show a significant energy peak between 0.3 and 2 cph in the bottom near layer. The fluctuations of temperature and velocity are interpreted as internal waves over a critical bottom slope. Since they seem to receive their energy mainly from the barotropic tide, the phenomenon is of interest in the dissipation cascade of tidal waves. The high frequency current amplitudes are occasionally strong enough to affect sediment deposition and related benthic processes. Inspection of current meter records from other regions of the NW-African continental slope reveal the similar effect of intensified bottom current fluctuations.

    Description: From 27 Janua1y to 23 June 1979 R. V. "Meteor" surveyed the central equatorial Atlantic on a section along 22° W from 3° N to 2° S. During the observation period, a hydrographic section down to 600 m was repeated ten times with a continuous "Howaldt-Bathysonde" CTD and a rosette sampler. The station distance was 10 to 15 nm. The water samples were used to recalibrate salinity and to determine oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a. An undulating CTD system ("Delphin") was towed on 11 sections. A profiling distance of one to two nautical miles and a profile depth of 90 m was obtained. Five current meter arrays were moored along 22° W between 3° N and 1° S from January to March 1979. In May and June two moorings were installed at 2° N and at the equator. On the buoys measurements of wind speed and direction were obtained. At 43 stations a wire-guided Aanderaa profiling current meter was successfully lowered. Drifting buoy experiments were repeated three times with clusters of 5 to 10 buoys. A fourth experiment took place in 1978 in the Gulf of Guinea. On the way from and to port XBT sections were carried out. The data sets obtained by these instruments are presented in this data report.
