    Notes: To investigate the tokamak turbulence, a set of Langmuir probes and a triple probe have been designed and used in the TBR [J. Fusion Energy 12, 529 (1993)] to measure average and fluctuating values of density, potential, and temperature of the plasma edge. The obtained results showed a significant influence of the temperature fluctuations in the transport parameters. Namely, taking into account this influence, the density and plasma potential power spectra were obtained, and the turbulence parameters reevaluated. Furthermore, the computed cross-power-spectra showed appreciable linear correlation, and the cross-bispectra showed a quadratic mode coupling between temperature fluctuations and other quantities. Significant bicoherence between these fluctuations was observed. Finally, for a fluctuation monitored at two probe points, no preferential direction for energy cascading was detected. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This work reports alterations on plasma-edge equilibrium profiles and on edge turbulence, and anomalous transport induced by resonant perturbing magnetic fields in the TBR (Brazilian Tokamak) tokamak [J. Fusion Energy 12, 295 (1993)]. Thus, these perturbations have reduced the equilibrium parameters and the spectral power of the fluctuations and enhanced their phase velocity. They have also reduced the particle flux at the plasma edge. All these electrostatic edge parameters have been computed by taking into account temperature fluctuation corrections. Although the perturbation slightly affected just the linear correlation between electrostatic fluctuations, its bispectral analysis shows a reduction of the quadratic mode coupling. Furthermore, the energy transferred between different spectral components, with and without the magnetic perturbation, did not have the same direction for all fluctuations. Finally, the normal probability distribution functions of the fluctuations show significant non-Gaussian features, although the fluctuating potential distribution became near Gaussian with the magnetic perturbation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To improve the turbulence characterization and the estimation of the transport processes at the plasma edge, we designed and installed, in the Brazilian tokamak (TBR), a complex probe that consisted of five single Langmuir probes, a four-channel triple probe, and magnetic probes. In this work, we describe in detail this diagnostic system and present experimental examples of simultaneously measured plasma parameters and electrostatic and magnetic turbulent fluctuations in the TBR tokamak. This procedure permits to investigate any coupling between these two kinds of oscillations. Furthermore, our results confirmed that corrections due to electron temperature fluctuations are relevant for turbulence characterization. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Brazilian batfish Ogcocephalus vespertilio is a nocturnal and early morning predator on bottom invertebrates, staying stationary and hidden in rock holes, crevices or among bottom rocks during the day. While active, it searches for prey walking along the bottom with the help of its specialized paired fins, with the illicium protracted and oscillating or exploring the substrate. The prey are either snapped up from the bottom, after visual detection, or dug out with use of the mouth and rostrum. It feeds on crustaceans (hermit crabs, true crabs, shrimps, amphipods, porcelain crabs, isopods and mysid shrimps), molluscs (snails, sea slugs and clams), polychaete worms (mostly Errantia) and echinoderms (sea urchins and brittle stars).

    Notes: Human IgG possesses four main subclasses, namely IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, of these IgG1–IgG3 fix complement, but IgG4 does not.We have studied the IgG subclasses of intercellular antibodies in the sera from 20 patients with Brazilian pemphigus foliaceus by immunofluorescent staining using mouse monoclonal antibodies against human IgG1–IgG4. At the same time, the complement fixing capability of each antibody was examined by complement immunofluorescence.All of four subclasses were frequently detected in most cases with varying distributions. However, no specific pattern was observed. Complement fixing antibodies were found in four patients. However, the distribution of IgG subclasses was incompatible with their known characteristics in terms of complement activation.This discrepancy increases the controversy over the importance of the complement system in blister formation in pemphigus.

    Notes: The benzothiadiazole compound acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) was assessed as an inducer of resistance against Crinipellis perniciosa, agent of witches’ broom, and Verticillium dahliae, agent of vascular wilt, both on cocoa. ASM induced a reduction in incidence of witches’ broom of up to 84·5% when sprayed 30 days before inoculation on cocoa seedlings of cv. Catongo. ASM also induced a reduction in severity of Verticillium wilt to 55·4% on cv. Theobahia. For both pathosystems, effects of dose on disease were not clearly observed. The efficacy of the inducer increased with the interval between sprayings and the respective inoculations with the pathogens. In another experiment, the effect of ASM on the control of witches’ broom on cocoa seedlings was compared with that of cuprous oxide and tebuconazole, all sprayed 15 days before inoculation. ASM reduced disease incidence by 60·1% compared with the inoculated control. ASM was superior to tebuconazole, and there was also a tendency for ASM to be better than cuprous oxide. To understand the mechanism of action of ASM as an inducer of resistance, alterations in the levels of total phenolics, polyphenol oxidases and peroxidases were evaluated 3, 15 and 30 days after spraying of seedlings of cv. Catongo. Enzyme activities from seedlings of cv. Theobahia were evaluated 30 days after spraying. On cv. Catongo, no significant differences in total phenolic content and polyphenol oxidase activity were detected after spraying. However, an increase in peroxidase activity was detected at all times of evaluation. On cv. Theobahia, significant increases in activities of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase were detected, indicating that defence responses due to ASM were dependent on host genotype.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the Brazilian pemphigus foliaceus (BPf) antigen applying the immunoblotting method to two different antigen sources using 27 patients' sera. Twelve BPf sera reacted specifically with a 150 kD protein in extract of dispase separated human epidermis, while 18 sera yielded a similar protein band in bovine muzzle desmosomal preparation. The diversity of staining intensities between the two samples suggested the heterogeneity of BPf antigens in terms of epitopes. Japanese sporadic pemphigus foliaceus (Pf) sera showed similar results but Japanese pemphigus vulgaris (Pv) sera recognized different antigens of 130 kD or 135 kD, suggesting that BPf is similar to Japanese Pf but is distinct from Pv in respect to the antigenic substance. Furthermore, the present study showed that immunoblot analysis using different antigen sources should be a valuable tool to determine clinical types of pemphigus.
