    Description / Table of Contents: Studying the morphology and subsurface geometry of mud volcanoes provides insights into their activity. This paper describes the internal structure of the Håkon Mosby mud volcano (HMMV) in the southwestern Barents Sea and presents a conceptual model of its evolution. The lack of a mud edifice and the profuse gas flares suggest that in the recent past the mud volcano evolution was predominantly controlled by venting of gas-rich fluids and free gas. However, the analysis of high-resolution single-channel seismic (SCS) data reveals for the first time the existence of a pseudo-mud chamber at the top of the 3 km deep central conduit. It was once created at the seabed and is now a buried expression that acts as mud chamber. The pseudo-mud chamber is situated approximately 300 m below the seafloor, directly above the 330 ka Bear Island Slide (BIS) scar reflection and below glacigenic debris flow deposits that constitute the sediment on top. The sediment profiler data indicates a younger mud deposit above the debris flows, which points to a reactivation of the mud volcano. The reactivation was most likely triggered by the contrast in density between the gas-rich mud chamber and the high-density debris flow deposits. Three stages, i.e. initiation, sealing and reactivation, and a second active period define the evolution of this young mud volcano. Both, the morphology and size of the conduit as well as in-situ temperature gradients point towards a focused and rapid fluid flow.

    Description: New marine geophysical data acquired across the partly ice-covered northern East Greenland continental margin highlight a complex interaction between tectonic and magmatic events. Breakup-related lava flows are imaged in reflection seismic data as seaward dipping reflectors, which are found to decrease in size both northward and southward from a central point at 75°N. We provide evidence that the magnetic anomaly pattern in the shelf area is related to volcanic phases and not to the presence of oceanic crust. The remnant magnetization of the individual lava flows is used to deduce a relative timing of the emplacement of the volcanic wedges. We find that the seaward dipping reflectors have been emplaced over a period of 2–4 Ma progressively from north to south and from landward to seaward. The new data indicate a major post-middle Eocene magmatic phase around the landward termination of the West Jan Mayen Fracture Zone. This post-40-Ma volcanism likely was associated with the progressive separation of the Jan Mayen microcontinent from East Greenland. The breakup of the Greenland Sea started at several isolated seafloor spreading cells whose location was controlled by rift structures and led to the present-day segmentation of the margin. The original rift basins were subsequently connected by steady-state seafloor spreading that propagated southward, from the Greenland Fracture Zone to the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone.

    Notes: Hydroxyapatite-coated coupons were tested in various physiological media. Immersion in Ringer's solution showed that heat-treated coatings displayed a weight gain but the assprayed coatings underwent a weight loss. Dissolution of the coating was measured by weighing the specimen before and after ageing. Immersion of hydroxyapatite coatings showed the appearance of small spheres that were identified by X-ray diffraction as hydroxyapatite. Changes in coating morphology were detected and the coating degradation mechanisms are discussed. This paper thus looks at the morphology, composition, crystallinity and dissolution of hydroxyapatite coatings aged in Ringer's solution.

    Notes: The amorphous phase content of air plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings is dependent upon spraying and deposition conditions. X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy were used to investigate the influence of spray parameters on the formation of the amorphous phase. Results show three factors which most influence the formation of the amorphous phase: dehydroxylation of the molten particle during flight, the cooling rate as it impinges onto the metal substrate, and the substrate temperature. Crystalline regions were identified as unmelted particles and elongated recrystallized areas. Amorphous phase regions vary throughout the coating but are more commonly found at the coating-substrate interface, i.e., the regions decrease toward the surface of the coating. Such an inhomogeneous distribution of phase content is expected to affect the clinical process of bone deposition, and therefore successful implant fixation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Thermally processed hydroxyapatite coatings used on dental implants and hip prostheses for enhanced fixation may typically consist of a number of chemical and structural phases. These phases affect coating performance and tissue attachment. Hydroxyapatite was plasma sprayed to examine the phase evolution during processing. Coatings were examined with X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis. Results indicate that phase transformations are produced by (a) preferential removal of hydroxyl and phosphate leading to a change in melt composition, and (b) the high cooling rate due to the thermal spray process. Hydroxyl group removal promotes the amorphous phase and oxyapatite. Further heating produces a less viscous melt facilitating decomposition of hydroxyapatite to tricalcium and tetracalcium phosphate. Phosphate removal during flight produces a more calcium-rich melt preferring tetracalcium phosphate and calcium oxide formation. A proposed model shows the phase location within the lamellae of these coatings. Coating processes must thus prevent removal of hydroxide and phosphate during processing to maximize the hydroxyapatite content. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 39, 580-587, 1998.
