Beschreibung: Southern Europe (Italy and the surrounding countries) experienced an unusual wet summer in 2014. The month- ly rainfall in July 2014 was 84% above (more than three standard deviation) normal with respect to the 1982– 2013 July climatology. The heavy rainfall damaged agriculture, and affected tourism and overall economy of the region. In this study, we tried to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for such abnormal weather by using model and observed datasets. The anomalously high precipitation over Italy is found to be associated with the positive sea surface temperature (SST) and convective anomalies in the tropical Pacific through the at- mospheric teleconnection. Rossby wave activity flux at upper levels shows an anomalous tropospheric quasi- stationary Rossby wave from the Pacific with an anomalous cyclonic phase over southern Europe. This anomalous cyclonic circulation is barotropic in nature and seen extending to lower atmospheric levels, weakening the sea- sonal high and causing heavy precipitation over the Southern Europe. The hypothesis is verified using the Nation- al Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) coupled forecast system model (CFSv2) seasonal forecasts. It is found that two-month lead forecast of CFSv2 was able to capture the wet summer event of 2014 over Southern Europe. The teleconnection pattern from Pacific to Southern Europe was also forecasted realistically by the CFSv2 system.

Beschreibung: Causes of the coupled model bias in simulating the zonal sea surface temperature (SST) gradient in the equatorial Atlantic are examined in three versions of the same coupled general circulation model (CGCM) differing only in the cumulus convection scheme. One version of the CGCM successfully simulates the mean zonal SST gradient of the equatorial Atlantic, in contrast to the failure of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 models. The present analysis shows that key factors to be successful are high skills in simulating the meridional location of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the precipitation over northern South America, and the southerly winds along the west coast of Africa associated with the West African monsoon in boreal spring. Model biases in the Pacific contribute to the weaker precipitation over northern South America. Uncoupled experiments with the atmospheric component further confirm the importance of remote influences on the development of the equatorial Atlantic bias. Key Points: The zonal SST gradient of the equatorial Atlantic is well simulated in a CGCM; Key factors for the realistic simulation of the Atlantic SST are presented; Remote forcing from the Pacific may contribute to the Atlantic SST bias

Notizen: It is demonstrated that cyclones evolve in a way different from that of anticyclones in rotating shallow water. The anticyclones merge and eventually take circular coherent forms, but cyclones are elongated with active enstrophy cascading. This asymmetric evolution is strengthened with increasing surface displacements. When the initial surface displacement exceeds a certain critical value, the initial elongation of a cyclonic ellipse ends up with splitting in two cyclones. This splitting of the cyclonic ellipse is always associated with the first appearance of a saddle point inside the core, due to irrotational, ageostrophic motion. The appearance of the saddle point inside the core seems to be a necessary condition for splitting of the core of the cyclonic ellipse with surface displacements. The linear stability analysis of the elliptical vortex is consistent qualitatively with both of the simulation results and the kinematic axisymmetrization/elongation principle.

Notizen: Abstract Weakly nonlinear quasi-geostrophic planetary waves on a beta-plane and topographic waves over a linearly inclined bottom are examined by use of shallow water equations for a small beta parameter. Long solitary wave solutions missed by the use of the traditional quasi-geostrophic approximation are found in a channel ocean with neither a sheared current nor a curved (non-linearly inclined) bottom topography. The solutions are missed in the traditional approach because the irrotational motion associated with the geostrophic divergence is neglected by the quasi-geostrophic approximation. Another example which calls attention to the limitation of the traditional quasi-geostrophic approximation is the nonlinear evolution of divergent planetary eddies whose scale is much larger than the Rossby's radius of deformation. Some aspects of a new evolution equation are briefly discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The interannual variability of the temperature structure of the Kuroshio Extension is studied by establishing time series for the period 1950 to 1970 and then comparing it with the time series of sea level differences across the North Equatorial Current obtained by Wyrtki (1975). First, the present analysis shows a significant correlation between the interannual fluctuation of the Kuroshio Extension and the eddy activity south of the Kuroshio axis, suggesting the importance of the eddy-driven mechanism. Secondly, spectral analysis shows close connections between the Kuroshio Extension and the North Equatorial Current with a reasonable time lag of about 1.5 years. This time lag of the mid-latitude variability is also supported by other independent data. In particular, the present preliminary study strongly suggests that the bimodal behavior of the Kuroshio path south of Japan and the intensity of the Kuroshio Countercurrent are closely connected with the Southern Oscillation/El Niño.

Notizen: Abstract Based on simple model results, I describe the recent progress in our understanding of physical mechanisms directly associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena. In particular, I extract two extremes from recent simple coupled models in order to interprete two complementary phases of interannual ENSO events. I also discuss what is most necessary for more complete model studies useful to improve forecasting skills.

Notizen: Abstract The evolution of an isolated meso-scale eddy near a coast is studied numerically. In particular, it is found that the translation speed of the adjusted eddy is estimated well by the mutual induction mechanism adapted to a rotating stratified fluid. The nonlinear Kelvin wave excited during the adjustment process is also discussed in connection with the “Kyucho”, the sudden warming of coastal waters associated with swift currents.

Notizen: Abstract A stability of planetary waves on an infinite beta-plane is investigated in an idealized two-layer fluid system for the large local Rossby numberM. When a primary wave is barotropic, two kinds of barotropic instability modes are found. One of them was previously discussed byGill (1974). When a primary wave is baroclinic, two different kinds of modes that enable barotropic and baroclinic energy transfers are found. The one that has the larger growth rate gains its energy mainly from the mean shear of the primary wave when the internal rotational Froude numberF is smaller than 1/2. WhenF is larger than 1/2, however, the available energy conversion of the primary wave is dominant. This mode has a fairly large part of its energy in the barotropic motion although the primary wave is purely baroclinic. The effect ofO(M −2) corrections is found to have a stabilizing influence on all symmetrical modes. The geophysical applications of the present analysis are suggested in the context.
