Beschreibung: Understanding and predicting the interannual variations of the whole monsoon climate system has been, and will continue to be, one of the major reasons for studying the oceanography of the Indian Ocean; but there are other reasons. Knowledge about Indian Ocean current systems may have diverse practical applications, from fisheries through search and rescue to management of Exclusive Economic Zones. Our discussion mainly concerns the open ocean and the climate applications, but the results are important for most continental shelves of the Indian Ocean region on all but the shortest timescales. We start by discussing what we know now of the Indian Ocean’s mean annual cycle, painfully gleaned from sparse observations over the last four decades. This data base for understanding the interannual variability of the Indian Ocean climate has not been adequate until very recently; however, this data base is in the process of expanding radically, due to the availability of four new tools. These are: satellite data (altimeter, wind stress); surface flux products, from weather forecast reanalyses; output of fine-scale numerical models, driven with those fluxes; and data from profiling floats. As we will see in various talks, this is revolutionising our understanding of variability in the Indian Ocean. CLIVAR’s Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel is starting to plan a programme of further observations, to coincide with a useful conjunction of observation satellites in 2003. This will be aimed at filling the larger remaining gaps in our understanding of Indian Ocean dynamics, (with emphasis on understanding its role in the monsoon cycle).

Beschreibung: Multi-decadal weakening trend of the equatorial Pacific easterly winds since 1960 has reversed after 1993. The trend reversal has induced cooling (shallow thermocline) trend in the equatorial western Pacific before 1993, followed by a warming (deep thermocline) trend from 1993 to the present. All available atmospheric reanalysis products corroborate the trend reversal during the two multi-decadal periods. The magnitudes of the multi-decadal trends of the easterly winds, however, differ among the reanalysis products. The trend reversals of regional ocean circulations are assessed using linear regressions between wind and transport anomalies in an eddy-permitting numerical model, suggesting that since 1993 the Indonesian Throughflow and the Leeuwin Current transports have also reversed their multi-decadal weakening trends. Key Points: - There have been reversals of the multi-decadal weakening trends of trade winds - Different reanalysis products capture different trends in trade winds

Beschreibung: It has been widely believed that the tropical Pacific trade winds weakened in the last century and would further decrease under a warmer climate in the 21st century. Recent high-quality observations, however, suggest that the tropical Pacific winds have actually strengthened in the past two decades. Precise causes of the...

Beschreibung: Magmatic epidote and zoisite commonly occur in Cretaceous tonalite of the Hazu area in the Ryoke belt, central Japan. The tonalite is mainly composed of amphibole, biotite, plagioclase, quartz, and epidote/zoisite with minor ilmenite, magnetite, pyrite, zircon, and apatite. Small amounts of K-feldspar occur as an interstitial phase between other felsic phases or perthitic patches in plagioclase. Epidote occurs as inclusions in plagioclase, as interstitial phase in the matrix, and as secondary phase in chlorite pseudomorphs after biotite, and in saussuritized plagioclase. The X Fe [= Fe 3+ /(Al + Fe 3+ )] value of the secondary epidote ranges from 0.27 to 0.39. Epidote inclusions in plagioclase and interstitial grains contain less Fe 3+ (X Fe = 0.08–0.29), Fe 3+ -poor epidote with X Fe 〈 0.18 occurs only as inclusion. Zoisite with X Fe value of 0.01–0.07 occurs only as inclusions in plagioclase, and usually has thin lamella-like layers of Fe 3+ -poor epidote with X Fe = 0.09–0.14. The Fe 3+ -poor epidote with X Fe 〈 0.20 and zoisite included in plagioclase occasionally form aggregates with K-feldspar and quartz. A thin sodic plagioclase zone develops at the boundary between the Fe 3+ -poor epidote and zoisite inclusions and their host plagioclase. Such a reaction texture is not observed at the boundary between Fe 3+ -richer epidote inclusions with X Fe 〉 0.20 and their host plagioclase. Epidote grains with X Fe 〉 0.20 in plagioclase and the matrix are a magmatic phase that crystallized directly from the tonalite magma. The Fe 3+ -poor epidote (X Fe 〈 0.20) and zoisite were probably formed by a local reaction between the trapped melt and its host plagioclase, and these are considered not to have been in equilibrium with the tonalite magma. Compositions of amphibole-plagioclase assemblages allowed for temperature estimates in the range of 730–770 °C and minimum pressures of 0.47–0.57 GPa for the epidote/zoisite-bearing tonalites of the Hazu area. Epidote/zoisite-free tonalites occur in other areas of the Ryoke belt. There may be several tonalite bodies that record different intrusion processes and solidification depths in the Ryoke belt.

Notizen: Strong Franz–Keldysh oscillations were observed in the nonlinear reflection spectra of heterostructures with InP self-assembled quantum dots. These oscillations manifest a built-in electric field of about 30 kV/cm. We propose that this field originates from electric charge captured by the intrinsic defects on the dot interface. The presence of acceptor-like intrinsic defect states is found to be a general feature of the InP/InGaP interface but was not observed in other structures with quantum dots such as InAs/GaAs. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this letter, we report a method called chemical bond manipulation for fabrication of multiperiod nanometer sized Si/SiO2/Ge layered structure. Chemical bond manipulation is a self-organization process which involves selective breaking and making of surface chemical bonds and thereby enable formation of the desired species on a full wafer scale. We show that oxygen of germanium oxide layer formed on Si(111) are picked up by the Si atoms arriving at the surface during subsequent growth. This phenomenon involves breaking of Ge–O bonds and making of Si–O bonds and leads to the formation of ultrathin Si and Ge layers sandwiched between ultrathin silicon oxide layers, preserving the original wafer morphology. This material exhibits blue-green light emission at room temperature when excited by ultraviolet laser. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
