    Abstract: The semiconductor tracker (SCT) is one of the tracking systems for charged particles in the ATLAS detector. It consists of 4088 silicon strip sensor modules. During Run 2 (2015–2018) the Large Hadron Collider delivered an integrated luminosity of 156 fb -1 to the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The instantaneous luminosity and pile-up conditions were far in excess of those assumed in the original design of the SCT detector. Due to improvements to the data acquisition system, the SCT operated stably throughout Run 2. It was available for 99.9% of the integrated luminosity and achieved a data-quality efficiency of 99.85%. Detailed studies have been made of the leakage current in SCT modules and the evolution of the full depletion voltage, which are used to study the impact of radiation damage to the modules.

    Abstract: The mechanical properties of ultrathin electrospun poly( L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) fibers were studied by performing tensile tests on individual fibers. The tests were carried out on microelectronic mechanical systems (MEMSs) which were developed for characterizing the mechanical properties of thin polymer fibers. Force–displacement curves were obtained from video recordings of the experiments which were carried out in a scanning electron microscope. Each video was processed with an image processing routine to determine the elongation of the fiber and the elastic deformation of a component of the MEMS which yielded the force acting on the specimen. PLLA fibers with diameters ranging from 150 nm to 2 μm were tested. The elastic modulus and the ultimate tensile strength of the fibers increased significantly for fiber diameters below 1 μm. This indicates a higher degree of orientation of the polymer chains in ultrathin fibers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009

    Abstract: The mechanical characteristics of bacterially synthesized nano‐cellulose (BNC) were studied with uniaxial compression and tensile tests. Compressive loads result in a release of water and the deformation of the water‐saturated network corresponds approximately to the volume of released water. The BNC hydrogel exhibits a mainly viscous response under compression. The strain response under tensile loads has an elastic and a viscous component. This can be described with a Maxwell model, where the viscosity is strain rate‐dependent. When the aqueous phase of the BNC hydrogel is stabilized with an additional alginate hydrogel matrix, the system exhibits an elastic response under compressive loads. The analysis of the ‘alginated’ BNC network with the Maxwell model shows that the alginate matrix increases the viscosity of the composite system. The results of the mechanical tests show that the water absorbed in the BNC hydrogel strongly influences its mechanical behavior.

    Abstract: Polyether ether ketone is a highly resilient thermoplastic that can withstand as an unfilled or filled polymer tribological high loads in high-temperature applications, as it has a high glass and melting temperature. Currently, it attracts interest as a lubricated material for drive systems to minimize noise, as a lightweight solution improving the CO2 balance, or in combination with novel lubricants. We have produced friction and wear maps with pin-on-disk tests on steel axial bearing rings and investigated the interaction and running-in behavior with different lubricants, such as different polyalkylene glycols, polyalphaolefin, and various esters. In general, the behavior of polyether ether ketone is hardly influenced by the frictional heat when loaded at room temperature. It shows a lubricant-specific polymer transfer and surface softening. This running-in impact is enhanced if a loading strategy with initial high friction power is applied. The beneficial transfer forms on the track in mixed lubrication on the rough counterpart until an increasing adhesive contact limits this effect. The appearance of a minimal wear coefficient was found below the glass temperature with lubricants strongly sorbing in polyether ether ketones, such as polar polyalkylenglycol or trimellitic acid ester-based lubricants. Using the interfacial energy of the system to derive an energy term describing the tendency to form a stable transfer, systematic trends in the tribological behavior of polyether ether ketone and polyketone could be identified that can be projected on other systems.

    Abstract: Masculinity norms play a crucial role in men’s help-seeking behaviors, service-use, and coping strategies for depression. While previous studies provided evidence for the association between gender role orientations, work related attitudes, stigmatization of men with depression and depressive symptoms, it remains unclear to what extent gender role orientations change over time and whether psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment have an impact on these transformations. Additionally, the role of partners in supporting depressed men and the impact of dyadic coping on these processes have not been explored. The aim of this study is to investigate how masculinity orientations and work-related attitudes change over time in men treated for depression, and to examine the role of their partners and dyadic coping in these transformation processes. Methods TRANSMODE is a prospective longitudinal mixed-methods study investigating the transformation of masculinity orientations and work-related attitudes in men treated for depression between the ages of 18 and 65 from different settings in Germany. The study will recruit 350 men from various settings for quantitative analysis. By applying a latent transition analysis, the primary outcome are changes in masculine orientations and work-related attitudes over time, measured at four times (t0, t1, t2, t3) with intervals of 6 months. Qualitative interview with a subsample of depressed men selected using latent profile analysis, will be conducted between t0 and t1 (a1) with a follow-up of 12 months (a2). In addition, qualitative interviews with the partners of depressed men will be conducted between t2 and t3 (p1). Qualitative data will be analysed using qualitative structured content analysis. Discussion A comprehensive understanding of the transformation processes of masculinity orientations over time including the impact of psychiatric/psychotherapeutic treatment and the role of partners can lead to the development of gender-sensitive depression treatment tailored to the unique needs of men with depression. Thus, the study can promote more effective and successful treatment outcomes and further contribute to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues among men and encourage them for mental health service use. Trial registration This study is registered in the German Clinical Trail Register (DRKS) and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) under registration number DRKS00031065 (Date of registration 06 February 2023).

    Abstract: The curative potential of Type I interferons for patients suffering from Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs) has been reported and these are the only class of drugs that can lead to reduction of the mutant allelic burden in patients. However, modelling IFN treatment in mice has been challenging. Here, we report the use of murine pegylated IFNα (murine ropeginterferon-a, mRopeg) developed by PharmaEssentia (Taipei, Taiwan) to model IFN treatment in transgenic MPN mouse models. We started treating JAK2V617Ff/+;vavCre and control vavCre mice (n=6-8) with PBS or mRopeg (600 ng/mouse/week), by subcutaneous injections from the time they were 4 weeks old. The mice were bled every 2 weeks from the facial vein and the blood parameters were monitored. We observed significant normalization of platelet and WBC counts in Jak2-V617F fl/+ vavCre mice to wild type levels. No effect on hematocrit and hemoglobin level was observed in the Jak2-V617F fl/+ vavCre mice. VavCre control animals showed no sign of negative effect such as cytopenia during the entire treatment course. We observed a highly significant prolongation of the survival of mRopeg treated JAK2V617Ff/+;vavCre mice over a duration of 80 days of treatment. While all the PBS treated JAK2V617Ff/+;vavCre mice died within 60 days, all the mRopeg treated mice were still alive till the end of the treatment duration. We also generated a novel transgenic mouse model that conditionally expresses hybrid mutant CALR protein (murine exons 1-8 and human CALR del52 exon9) from the endogenous murine Calr locus. We bred them into vavCre background (in both heterozyhous and homozygous states) to induce expression of CALR-del52 in hematopoietic cells. Upon Cre recombinase expression, the endogenous murine exon 9 is replaced by the human del52 exon 9 and the expression of the humanized Calr-del52 oncoprotein is detectable by Western blot analysis using mutant CALR specific antibodies. Calr-del52 animals develop an essential thrombocythemia (ET) like phenotype when expressed in a heterozygous state with elevated number of hematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. In the homozygous state, the thrombocythemia is more severe with splenomegaly and older animals show anemia with increased WBC. Bone marrow histology shows megakaryocytic hyperplasia with no sign of fibrosis up to age of one year. We treated a cohort of animals with 600 ng mRopeg/PBS once a week for 4 weeks. Peripheral blood counts were determined at baseline and at regular intervals during treatment. At the end of treatment, mice were sacrificed, and splenic and bone marrow cells were immunophenotyped and quantified by FACS. We observed correction of thrombocythemia in the homozygous Calr-del52 mice but no unspecific decrease of platelet count in the vavCre mRopeg treated animals. We observed significant specific reduction of the long-term hematopoietic stem cells (LT-HSCs/fraction A) in homozygous CALR-del52 mice. In conclusion, Type I IFN treatment significantly reduces platelet counts to normal levels in both JAK2 and CALR mutant driven MPN mouse models. The prolongation of survival of JAK2V617F transgenic mice upon Type I IFN treatment is particularly remarkable; as no survival data is reported until now in any clinical trials or other animal models. Further experiments are required to understand the mechanism of action of this phenomenon. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.
