Abstract: We studied the location of Zn in the testicle of theWistar rat using the Timm histochemical technique, autoradiography with 65Zn and the dynamic pathway of 65Zn in the organ. Locations of Zn in several cellular components of the spermatogenic chain and in the Leydig cells were observed. This location was proved statistically by a quantitative analysis of the autoradiographs. The presence of Zn in the testicle, prostate and the adrenal gland could be related to the activation of the enzyme β-hydroxy-steroid dehydrogenase although this fact does not exclude any other function of this metal, as far as we know.

Abstract: We have clinically examined 29 patients with non-migraine headache types (100%), eleven patients with headache and high blood hypertension associated with different pathologies (37%), ten patients with tension headache (34%), five cases with posttraumatic headache (17%), four cases with headache and microangiopathy and leukoencephalopathy (13%), three cases of tension headache (10%), three cases with headache and neurobehavioral disorders (anxiety and depression, mood changes, aggression) (10%), two cases with headache and facial paralysis (6.8%), one case headache with Alzheimer disease and senile dementia (3%), one case with headache and Parkinson diseases (3%), and one case with anaemia (3%) and metabolic disorders. The clinical findings are discussed in relationship with Retino-Hypothalamic-Pineal (RHP) axis, disturbances in normal sensory processing, sleep disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, facial paralysis, neurobehavioral and disorders. We have emphasized the differential diagnosis with migraine subtypes.

Abstract: Reason for performing study: Limited information exists concerning the defence of homeostasis during endurance competitions and the relationship with performance. Objectives: This research analysed renin (REN), angiotensin II (ANG), aldosterone (ALD) and vasopressin (AVP) in horses covering different distances, assesses differences between successful and eliminated horses and evaluates correlations between hydration status, renal function, electrolytes, REN, ANG, ALD and AVP. Methods: Packed cell volume (PCV), velocity and serum concentrations of REN, ANG, ALD, AVP, Na, K, Cl, Ca, Mg, P, creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, total proteins (TSP), albumin (ALB), serum ureic nitrogen (SUN), creatinine (CREAT) and lactate were analysed in both successful horses (SH) and in horses eliminated due to metabolic problems (MH). Two types of competition were studied: 91 km in one day ( Competition A : 20 SH, 9 MH) and 166 km in 2 days, 83 km/day ( Competition B : 10 SH and 5 MH). Results: Research analysed renin was not affected by exercise, whereas ANG, ALD and AVP increased. In the SH group, resting ALD and AVP concentrations at the beginning of the second day of Competition B were higher than preride values. Vasopressin did not change during the second day of Competition B , whereas ALD progressively increased. Metabolic problems of both groups showed more evident dehydration (higher PCV, TSP, ALB, SUN and CREAT) and electrolyte alterations (more intense decreases of Na and Cl) than SH at the different sampling times. Metabolic problems presented higher ALD and AVP concentrations. Angiotensin II was higher at certain sampling times in the horses. Conclusions: Endurance horses with dehydration and electrolyte disturbances showed a more intense activation of the REN‐ANG‐ALD‐AVP axis. Potential relevance: The study of the response of the REN‐ANG‐ALD‐AVP axis during prolonged exercise in horses with different performance will aid to minimise the risk of metabolic diseases during competitions.

Abstract: Samples of albino mice cerebellar cortex were processed by the cryofracture method for scanning electron microscopy and examined with the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Albino mouse cerebellar cortex was excised, cut into 1-2 mm slices and inmersed in 4% glutaraldehyde in O. l M phosphate buffer solution, pH 7.4, for 24h at 4°C; and postfixed for 1 h in a similarly buffered 1% osmium tetroxide solution. Specimens were dehydrated in a graded serie of ethanol (30, 50, 70, 80, 90 2x100%) prior to wrapping individual tissue pieces in preformed absolute ethanol filled parafilm cryofracture packets. Rapid freezing of packets was performed by plunging into LN 2 . First, the packet was transferred from the LN 2 storage vessel with LNT chilled forceps in order to avoid themial damage. Secondly, the cooled fracture blade was removed from the LN 2 , the packet was orientated under the blade, and immediately struck with a heavy tool.

Abstract: The cerebellar granule cells of hamsters, mice, primates and human have been examined to study their organisation, outer and inner surfaces, pattern of connectivity on granule cell groups and synaptic relationships with afferent mossy and climbing fibers in the granule cell layer and with Purkinje cell dendritic spines in the molecular layer. Confocal laser scanning microscopy of hamster cerebellum cortex, using FM4-64 as an intracellular stain, showed in z-series of stacks of optodigital sections, the presence of granule cell groups formed by small, medium and large granule cells, ranging from 3-10 μm in diameter, surrounded by large Golgi cells. The granule cell/Golgi cell ratio was 50 to 4 (Fig. 1). Cryofractured mouse cerebellar cortex showed the inner organization of granule cell nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments in samples examined with FEURSEM and coated with chromium (Fig. 2), which were compared with corresponding freeze-etching replica images.
