Abstract: The semiconductor tracker (SCT) is one of the tracking systems for charged particles in the ATLAS detector. It consists of 4088 silicon strip sensor modules. During Run 2 (2015–2018) the Large Hadron Collider delivered an integrated luminosity of 156 fb -1 to the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The instantaneous luminosity and pile-up conditions were far in excess of those assumed in the original design of the SCT detector. Due to improvements to the data acquisition system, the SCT operated stably throughout Run 2. It was available for 99.9% of the integrated luminosity and achieved a data-quality efficiency of 99.85%. Detailed studies have been made of the leakage current in SCT modules and the evolution of the full depletion voltage, which are used to study the impact of radiation damage to the modules.

Abstract: The problem of evaluating the Soviet military effort, 1989-1990. Since estimating Soviet military expenditure is, as we all know, a difficult art, the author himself, in his conclusion, states that his article raises more questions then it answers. He does, however, endeavour to clear the ground, and to define the real problems. He shows the futility of direct comparison of American and Soviet GNP, and the respective proportions of military expenditure in the GNP, and reminds the reader that the idea of military expenditure can be understood in either a limited sense (expenditure exclusively relating to the military) or in a wider sense (global military expenditure). There is no adequate method of expressing the military potential of a country by a single index. By the same token, the idea of parity between military powers has little relevance. Certain items of expenditure are not comparable in the USA and the USSR. Annual expenditure is always compared, when what should be accounted for are outgoings in previous years, not forgetting the problems of currency convertibility and differences in price systems, etc. Nevertheless, the author is prepared to venture an estimate, in figures whose approximate nature he is careful to stress. He thinks that expenditure on arms production fell in 1989-1990, touches upon the problems of converting the arms industry to civil industry, the costs and the speed involved, and ends with a summary table, qualified with many reservations. He estimates that total military expenditure, in 1989, was in no way less then 200 billion roubles, and that its share in the GNP exceeded (? greatly) 20 %. Of these 200 billion roubles, arms and military supplies (including R & D and investments) amounted to at least 160 billion, the remaining 40 billion being used for upkeep, instruction and health care of personnel, pensions, construction for military purposes, information, transport, etc.

Abstract: The basic line of reasoning in the excellent and thought-provoking article by Professor Rosefielde is: The Soviets claim and some Western scholars agree that from 1928 to 1932 the economy of the USSR grew dramatically, that, at the expense of an agricultural surplus, industry made a big leap forward “which virtually assured the success of future Soviet economic development.” A common belief of specialists (Professor Rosefielde included) is that although some value indicators, especially prices (price changes), could be distorted, in general, Soviet statistics are “not freely invented,” and “it is unlikely that the Soviets kept two sets of books.” Thus, some scholars have corrected the price basis of the calculation of the rate of economic growth during 1928-32 (instead of 1928 prices, the prices of 1937/50 were used) and obtained much less spectacular, but still very impressive, figures demonstrating growth of the economy, particularly in industry and construction.
