Notes: A small multicusp ion source has been used to generate beams of nitrogen ions. To achieve a high percentage of N+ ions, the source was equipped with a magnetic filter and operated with a high N2 gas density. A nearly pure atomic nitrogen ion (N+) beam (98.5% N+, 1.5% N2+), suitable for implantation purposes, was produced. The operating characteristics of this source, including species mix, are presented.

Notes: The small multicusp ion source developed at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) has been equipped with a low voltage ratio, single aperture extraction system. The influence of the potential of the plasma electrode and of a dipole filter field on the beam emittance are measured. A simple method to reduce hash is suggested. The aim of these investigations is to produce nitrogen ion beams with a high atomic ion fraction and a low emittance as required for a RFQ-accelerator, which will be built for ion implantation.

Notes: Forty-nine patients, scheduled for transurethral resection of the prostate or a bladder neoplasm on 50 occasions, were studied. The patients were randomly allocated to one of the two methods of puncture, midline or paramedian. Technical difficulties and the occurrence of complications were recorded. The extent of sensory and motor blockade was also compared. The paramedian approach was associated with a lower frequency of technical problems compared to the midline approach. Statistically significant differences were demonstrated between the two techniques for the following factors: repeated attempts at needle insertion; difficulty in identification of the epidural space; resistance to introduction of the catheter; resistance to injection through the epidural catheter; and the production of paraesthesiae (nine patients in the midline group compared to only one patient in the paramedian group, p 〈 0.01). The catheter entered a vessel at first in two patients in each group. No significant differences were demonstrated between the groups in the extent of sensory and motor blockade. The study supports the view that the paramedian approach has technical advantages over the midline approach for lumbar epidural analgesia with catheter technique.

Notes: Sources of Li− ions are needed for diagnostic neutral beams for fusion research. Previous efforts to generate Li− beams have focused on electron capture in a gas or production on a low work-function surface in a plasma. Volume production of Li− by dissociative attachment of optically pumped lithium molecules has also been studied. This paper presents experimental results for volume production of a Li− ion beam from a plasma discharge. These results show that a discharge source of Li− ions can provide suitable current densities for diagnostic beams. A theoretical model for the formation of Li− ions from Li2 molecules in the lithium discharge is developed. The model is in good agreement with the experimental results and shows favorable parameter scalings for further improvement of the Li− ion source.

Notes: Abstract Objective To assess effects of nebulized corticosteroid on lung function in sepsis. Design Randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded study in septic pigs. Setting A trauma research laboratory Materials 16 juvenile pigs, one excluded due to pulmonary hypertension at baseline. Interventions Mechanical ventilation and continuous light anesthesia. Brief infusion of liveStaph. aureus (4×1010cfu) followed by nebulization of beclomethasone sone dipropionate (BDP) 50μg/kg (n=8) or placebo (n=7) 30 and 360 min after start of septic challenge. Measurements and results Vascular pressures, cardiac output, lung mechanics, gas exchange and oxygen transport variables were measured at regular intervals. An identical transient rise in mean pulmonary artery pressure was seen in both groups (mean±SD: 48±4 mmHg), followed by a gradual increase in pulmonary vascular resistance, reaching maximum at 4h but significantly reduced by BDP compared to placebo (p〈0.01, ANOVA). Mean systemic arterial pressure, arterial oxygen tension and lung compliance did not change significantly in the BDP group, but they all declined in the placebo-group (p〈0.01 compared to baseline,p〈0.05–0.01 between the groups). Oxygen delivery decreased significantly in the placebo group at 12h (p〈0.05). Oxygen extraction increased in both groups (p〈0.01 compared to baseline), being significantly higher in the placebo group at 12h (p〈0.05). Conclusion Nebulized corticosteroid protects pulmonary function in sepsis, indicating a therapeutic role in the treatment of septic ARDS.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Age-related changes in the relative proportion of high buoyant density proteoglycans of the soft tissue cover of the mandibular condyle of domestic pigs and the chemical composition of these proteoglycans were investigated by biochemical methods. The relative proportion of high buoyant density proteoglycans has been shown to decrease with age, with their chemical composition varying as follows: With age, the relative proportions of protein increased, galactosamine decreased, glucosamine was similar in newborns and juveniles, but clearly increased in adults, galactosamine plus glucosamine decreased. As measured by1H-NMR-relaxation spectroscopic methods, the concentration of free tissue water of the soft tissue cover of the mandibular condyle decreased with age. Its mobility, however, was greater in newborns than in juveniles, but similar in juveniles and adults. The concentration of free tissue water, but not its mobility, correlated weakly with relative proportions of polyanionic side chains (e. g. chondroitin sulphate plus keratan sulphate chains) of the high buoyant density proteoglycans. By affecting the concentration of free tissue water and in turn of matrix solutes and cellular environments, the high buoyant density proteoglycans of the soft tissue cover of the mandibular condyle seem to be involved in regulation of age-related changes in the adaptive remodelling activity of the mandibular condyle.
