    Notes: Incoherent inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on polycrystalline samples of NH4B(C6H5)4 and NH4B(C6D5)4 in the 1.5–120 K temperature range. A high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering spectrum at the lowest temperatures reveals a rotational tunneling spectrum containing two peaks at 26.5 and 53.0 μeV and is characteristic of ammonium ions in a cubic environment. From the intensities of these peaks it seems that about half of the ammonium ions are involved in this tunneling. Two further peaks are found at higher energy, 4.3 and 8.2 meV, either of which may be correlated as the libration associated with the observed tunnel splitting depending on the form of the potential. An alternative assignment of the peaks at 4.3 and 8.2 meV as transitions of a free rotor from the ground state to the J=2 and J=3 levels is also discussed.

    Notes: Changes in the vibrational spectra for molecules that nearly freely rotate or perform rotational tunneling at low temperatures are explained through the systematic study of the combined symmetry of the molecule, the site, and the molecule's nuclear spins. The changes observed for different crystallizations in the low temperature vibrational spectra of the NH+4 ion dilute in KTPB and in NH4B(C6D5)4, the NH3D+ ion in ATPB and NH4ClO4, and of solid CH4 II are examined and explained as arising from slight perturbations of the crystalline site symmetry.

    Notes: The N–H stretching and H–N–H bending regions of the infrared spectrum of the title compound (ATPB) have been examined with care. The stretching bands show rotation-like structure that we attribute to rotational motion of NH+4 in a very low barrier. The barrier has the symmetry of a tetrahedral molecule in a tetrahedral site and is characterized by the dimensionless parameter β=1. The J=0 and J=1 levels are below the barrier and the J=2 levels are above it. Slow interconversion of nuclear spin species is seen in keeping with the low barrier model. The spectra of the ATPB with some NH3D+, with a high concentration of K+ and with deuterated phenyl groups have been examined, and show spectra in keeping with the model.

    Notes: Abstract The excretion of lignocaine in breast milk has been documented in a 34-year-old woman following the injection of 20 mg lignocaine for a dental alloy restoration in the right upper quadrant. Lignocaine and its primary metabolite monoethylglycinexylidide in milk and plasma were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. The concentration of lignocaine in milk ranged from 44–66 μgl−1 while that for monoethylglycinexylidide ranged from 35–41 μgl−1. The milk: plasma ratios for lignocaine and monoethylglycinexylidide were 1.1 and 1.8, respectively. The calculated daily infant doses for the parent drug and metabolite were both less than 0.01 mg kg−1 day−1. With the exception of very rare allergic reactions, these levels of infant exposure are extremely low and of no toxicological significance. Nursing mothers receiving lignocaine for standard dental procedures can be advised that continuation of breast feeding is safe.

    Notes: Abstract  One of the most popular petrogenetic concepts is that of simultaneous assimilation and fractional crystallisation (AFC). The equations governing these processes are well known and widely applied. The power and attraction of the model are that, with the minimum of constraints, petrogenetic schemes can be erected for essentially any group of rocks. These models are usually based on the observed variations in a small number of trace elements and/or isotopic systems. In this paper we have generated well-constrained AFC models for the Variscan, calc-alkaline Quérigut complex in the French Pyrénées. Our models are based on geological constraints on the identities of the parent magma and candidate assimilants, and the Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotope systematics of the rocks. The modelling is successful in mimicking the isotope array for the actual rocks. However, the results are massively inconsistent with those produced using the major- and trace-element concentrations. Our major conclusion is that AFC modelling should be undertaken only with robust initial constraints on the compositions of the parent magma and the proposed assimilant, with due respect for crystal-liquid partition coefficients, in so far as they are known. The results should then be accepted only if the isotope-based model parameters are consistent with those derived from major- and trace-element variations.

    Notes: Abstract The small number of adverse reactions to antimicrobial agents in the horse, recorded to date, reflects either a low level of reaction in the species or a failure to observe and report them, perhaps the latter. Reactions that have been observed could be due to toxic effects, e.g. discomfort after the intramuscular injection of chloramphenicol succinate; to hypersensitivity, e.g. the excitation or anaphylaxis observed after benzylpenicillins; and to biological or metabolic effects, e.g. changes in gut flora with oxytetracycline. A documentation of all reactions observed would both expand knowledge and protect horses known to have reacted.

    Description: Western North Pacific tropical cyclone (TC) model tracks are analyzed in two large multimodelensembles, spanning a large variety of models and multiple future climate scenarios. Two methodologiesare used to synthesize the properties of TC tracks in this large data set: cluster analysis and mass momentellipses. First, the models’ TC tracks are compared to observed TC tracks’ characteristics, and a subset ofthe models is chosen for analysis, based on the tracks’ similarity to observations and sample size. Potentialchanges in track types in a warming climate are identified by comparing the kernel smoothed probabilitydistributions of various track variables in historical and future scenarios using a Kolmogorov-Smirnovsignificance test. Two track changes are identified. The first is a statistically significant increase in thenorth-south expansion, which can also be viewed as a poleward shift, as TC tracks are prevented fromexpanding equatorward due to the weak Coriolis force near the equator. The second change is an eastwardshift in the storm tracks that occur near the central Pacific in one of the multimodel ensembles, indicatinga possible increase in the occurrence of storms near Hawaii in a warming climate. The dependence of theresults on which model and future scenario are considered emphasizes the necessity of including multiplemodels and scenarios when considering future changes in TC characteristics.

    Description: Arctic sea-ice area and volume have substantially decreased since the beginning of the satellite era. Concurrently, the pole-ward heat transport from the North Atlantic Ocean into the Arctic has increased, partly contributing to the loss of sea ice. Increasing the horizontal resolution of general circulation models (GCMs) improves their ability to represent the complex interplay of processes at high latitudes. Here, we investigate the impact of model resolution on Arctic sea ice and Atlantic Ocean heat transport (OHT) by using five different state-of-the-art coupled GCMs (12 model configurations in total) that include dynamic representations of the ocean, atmosphere and sea ice. The models participate in the High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) of the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Model results over the period 1950–2014 are compared to different observational datasets. In the models studied, a finer ocean resolution drives lower Arctic sea-ice area and volume and generally enhances Atlantic OHT. The representation of ocean surface characteristics, such as sea-surface temperature (SST) and velocity, is greatly improved by using a finer ocean reso-lution. This study highlights a clear anticorrelation at interannual time scales between Arctic sea ice (area and volume) and Atlantic OHT north of 60 ◦N in the models studied. However, the strength of this relationship is not systematically impacted by model resolution. The higher the latitude to compute OHT, the stronger the relationship between sea-ice area/volume and OHT. Sea ice in the Barents/Kara and Greenland–Iceland–Norwegian (GIN) Seas is more strongly connected to Atlantic OHT than other Arctic seas.
