    Description: The term "space weather" summarizes phenomena in the solar system that originate from the sun and can affect modern technological infrastucture - including disturbances of navigation systems (e.g. GNSS), problems in power supply operation, as well as the loss of radio communication. The SWAP (Space Weather: The Austrian Platform) project deals with the diffusion of space weather information and expertise to potential users and the public. Funded as part of the Austrian Space Applications Programme (FFG), the project is carried out by a consortium of eight partners in space weather research and application. Our aims are to (1) create a network of national experts in the field, (2) establish a national space weather platform, and (3) plot a road map for future development in Austria. In this presentation, we will provide an overview on our progress in developing a national platform. A newly established website serves as a single point of entry into the topic of space weather in Austria. We use this platform as a launchpad to contact potential stakeholders and provide a resource of combined space weather expertise, with the intent to extend awareness of space weather events and their potential consequences. Using a space weather “atlas”, the website ties together the existing expertise with space weather topics. A direct line of contact to the relevant experts is provided in case of extreme events. We have identified various stakeholders including regional warning centres, power grid operators, groups relying on GPS and radio signals, and the press, among others.

    Description: Tsunamis are one of the most devastating natural disasters, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. In recent years, advances in science and technology have led to the development of sophisticated tsunami early warning systems, with promising operational applications. However, much work remains to be done in order to further improve the accuracy and timeliness of warning systems, and for enhancing the preparedness of at-risk communities. In December 2017, the U.N. proclaimed the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), also referred to as the Ocean Decade. The Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP) approved by the UNESCO IOC in 2021 in response to the call to Ocean Decade action provides an excellent framework for international cooperation to enhance the end-to-end tsunami early warning and mitigation systems. The main objectives of the ODTP are (i) to develop the warning systems’ capability to issue actionable and timely tsunami warnings for tsunamis from all identified sources to 100% of coasts at risk and (ii) 100% of communities at risk to be prepared and resilient to tsunamis by 2030 through programmes like the UNESCO IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme. A Research, Development and Implementation Plan is being prepared by the ODTP Science Committee highlighting the goals, status, challenges, potential solutions and implementation pathways for enhancing (i) risk knowledge, (ii) detection, analysis and forecasting, (iii) warning dissemination and communication, and (iv) preparedness and response capabilities. The plan also highlights capacity development needs, governance aspects and international cooperation in achieving the objectives of the ODTP.

    Notes: The organic crystal 4-nitro-4'-methylbenzylidene aniline (NMBA) was identified as a promising nonlinear material by the powder technique. The material gave a second harmonic intensity 16 times that of urea. Large single crystals of dimensions 5×3×1 cm3 were grown by the temperature lowering of a seeded supersaturated ethyl acetate solution. The principal dielectric axes were defined by orthoscopic examination. The dispersions of the refractive indices were determined to an accuracy of ±0.0015 using the minimum deviation technique and Maker fringe spacings. These dispersion curves were fitted to a Sellmeier equation which allowed the indices to be determined to ±0.0006. The nonlinear d coefficients d11, d33, d31, and d13 were evaluated at 1000, 1064, and 1300 nm using the Maker fringe technique. The coefficient d11 was over 200 times larger than potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) d36. In addition, the nondiagonal coefficient d31 was similar to the phase-matching coefficient in the organic material 3-acetamido-4-dimethylamino-nitrobenzene (DAN). Critically phase-matched second harmonic signals were observed at all fundamental wavelengths. There was excellent agreement between the experimentally determined and theoretical phase-matched incidence angles. Noncritical phase-matched conditions have been calculated and are reported. Both angle and wavelength noncritical phase matching is possible with this crystal.

    Notes: Thermal diffusivities of high quality (-)2-(α-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) single crystals were measured in different directions by the flash diffusivity method. The complete thermal conductivity tensor at temperatures of 295, 323, and 349 K was then obtained for this monoclinic crystal from the thermal diffusivity, specific heat, and density data. For instance, the thermal conductivity coefficients at 295 K are k1=0.27 W/mK, k2=0.29 W/mK, and k3=0.20 W/mK. The peak melting point of MBANP lies at 357.3 K, whereas the corresponding enthalpy of melting ΔHm has a value 67.2 J/g.

    Notes: A study of the linear electro-optic effect in single crystals of the organic compound, 4-nitro–4'-methylbenzylidene aniline is reported. The reduced half-wave voltages have been found to have values 2.8, 1.3, and 1.1 kV at 632.8, 514.5, and 488.0 nm, respectively and the corresponding values of the largest linear electro-optic coefficient have been calculated. The thermal variation of the birefringence has also been investigated and the temperature variation of the refractive index difference is found to have the value, dΔn/dT = 15.8 × 10−5 K−1.

Variously timed sub-optimal irrigation strategies were applied to sugarbeet grown on a light soil (loamy sand or sandy loam) over four seasons (1991 to 1994) to investigate the effect on crop growth and nitrate leaching risk. Data from the two dry seasons, (1991 and 1994) are reported here. In the driest year (1991) soil mineral N levels after autumn harvest were negatively related to crop water use (P 〈 0.05). In this season, there was little drainage from the soil profile, and full irrigation reduced residual soil N by 31 kg N/ha (0-90 cm) compared with the unirrigated treatment (79 kg N/ha). The potential for N leaching during the ensuing winter was consequently more than halved. In 1991 and 1994 there was a strong positive linear relationship between dry matter yield, N uptake and water use, but a negative relationship between plant N concentration and water use. These relationships were a function of the severity and not the timing of drought. The additional N uptake associated with increased irrigation and crop water use was biased towards a large concentration in the aboveground crop (tops), which are normally returned to the soil. The C:N ratio of sugarbeet tops was affected by crop water supply with droughted crops having lower values. This would also influence N release and subsequent leaching risk. However, the effects of drought on N leaching risk were relatively small when compared with other root crops such as potatoes.

    Notes: Gold, as a trace element, is not directly detectable by geophysical borehole logging techniques. Geophysical logging methods have therefore been used to infer the presence of structural features and alteration processes associated with gold. Since these features and processes differ with the style of gold mineralization, a unique relation between geophysical anomalies and gold cannot be established. However, in a particular environment, such an association can be established. We examined geophysical log data (self potential, induced polarization, resistivity, gamma, temperature, and temperature gradient) and drill core from the Barber-Larder property in NE Ontario. The geophysically detectable alteration processes associated with gold were identified as sericitization and pyritization, by means of factor analysis. A linear discriminant function was constructed which allowed the zones of economic mineralization (nominally 0.05 oz/ton or 1.5 ppm) to be identified with a 75% success rate based on geophysical log data alone. This rate was achieved without sophisticated non-linear data transformations.
