    Notes: Abstract A survey of 346 Norwegian lakes revealed some consistent patterns with regard to the occurrence of Holopedium gibberum versus Daphnia spp. Both biomass and frequency of Holopedium were negatively correlated with pH and Ca-concentration, and this species rarely occurred at pH 〉 8, or Ca-concentrations 〉 10 mg l−1. On the contrary, the various Daphnia species, although showing different susceptibilities to fish predation and different preferences for lake productivity, were all positively correlated with Ca. Statistical analysis as well as laboratory experiments and biochemical considerations, suggest that Holopedium may be a superior competitor at very low Ca-concentrations, but is replaced by Daphnia at higher pH and increasing Ca-content. High pH in itself is possibly disadvantageous for Holopedium by preventing formation of the muco-polysaccaride mantle.

    Notes: Abstract Prey selection mechanisms of juveniles of the particulate feeding roach (Rutilus rutilus) were tested in bag experiments in lake Gjersjøn. Cladocerans and large developmental stages (cop. IV-ad.) of copepods were consumed in large numbers both in the bags added fish and in lake, while rotifers increased in numbers in bags added fish. The effect of fish predation on the small cladoceran Bosmina longirostris was tested by comparing morphological structures in fish-free bags and bags added fish. The results strongly support the visibility selective hypothesis, as eye-diameter became significantly smaller in bags added fish (P 〈 0.05, T-test), while body-size, length of antennae and mucro, frequency and number of eggs were slightly or unsignificantly correlated with presence or absence of fish. Further, while roach was found to consume large numbers of Bosmina longirostris, the far greater but nearly unpigmented Asplanchna priodonta was never consumed. Additionally, other data further supporting the visibility-selective hypothesis are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Studies of fluctuations in total organic carbon (TOC) were performedin both the reference basin and the acidified basin of experimental LakeSkjervatjern, in order to separate effects of various catchment and in-lakeprocesses. Nearly five years of catchment acidification did not inducesignificant changes in TOC. TOC concentrations was not related clearly toprecipitation or runoff. In both basins, there was a regular, seasonal patternwith a gradual increase in TOC concentrations from spring to late autumn.Minima in concentrations occurred during periods with frozen ground inwinter, irrespective of discharge patterns. The decrease from ∼10 mg C l-1 in autumn to 1--2 mg C l-1 in latewinter, was only seen in surface layers. Runoff was the major loss routefor surface TOC in the lake. Photo-oxidation, bacterial oxidation, andsedimentation combined yielded maximum loss rates of 3%of surface TOC d-1. Below a depth of 1 m 0.5%d-1 was lost to these same processes. The surface microlayerhad 5--10 times more TOC than the bulk water on average, and could haveeffects on gas exchange and sub-surface light. Despite the oxidation ofTOC, the short residence time of the lake and rapid replacement of TOCfrom the catchment was the major determinant of lake water TOC.
