    Notes: Summary In a study of 10 diabetic patients, each of whom was in a severely decompensated state, notable alteration of blood flow properties was observed in those six patients who were hyperosmolar. In this form of diabetic decompensation, whole blood filtration was distinctly impaired. The additional impairment was shown to be due to an accumulation of solute within the erythrocytes occurring as a consequence of hyper-osmolarity. The alterations in erythrocytes were revealed by Coulter blood count abnormalities and confirmed by osmotic fragility studies. When biochemical improvement was achieved in these patients, rapid resolution of the erythrocyte abnormalities occurred. Microvascular ischaemia due to such erythrocyte alterations may be a possible explanation for the characteristic cerebral disturbances of the hyperosmolar diabetic state. Altered blood flow properties would also promote vascular thrombosis, a common terminal event in the hyperosmolar non-ketotic syndrome with associated 50 per cent mortality. An improved design of the insulin and fluid replacement therapy for patients in hyperosmolar diabetic coma might be based on the findings of these and further studies.

    Notes: The photodecomposition of diphenyl-2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylphosphine oxide (1) was studied both in solution at 40°C and in thin films in the presence of 1,1-di-p-tolylethylene as a model substrate for vinyl monomers. Both primary radicals resulting from α-cleavage of 1 were found to add to the olefinic double bond of the model substrate (initiation). The diphenylphosphinoyl radical (3) proved to be twice as effective as the 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl radical (2) under all conditions. Oxygen (air) considerably reduced the initiating efficiencies fp, in particular fp(2) (of radical 2). The addition of triethylamine partially restored the overall initiating efficiency in all likelihood by oxygen scavenging. A direct contribution of triethylamine-derived radicals to the initiation was not observed.

    Notes: The room-temperature aging of two nitrile rubber-epoxy adhesives has been examined. Both are 121°C curing systems, based on DGEBA-type epoxy resins, one of which has been available for about 15 years while the other is a more recent development. It has been found that hydrolysis of the epoxide and polymerization both occur slowly, reducing the epoxide content and solubility. A major reduction in honeycomb peel strength of joints made with aged material was evident in the older system and to a lesser extent in the newer adhesive. This is a result of diminished adhesive flow. Tensile strength was less affected by aging.

    Notes: The hydrolytic stability of triglycidyl(4-aminophenol) (ERL 0500), tetraglycidyl(methylenedianiline) (MY720), and a number of model compounds has been investigated. It has been shown that at 60°C and 96% relative humidity undiluted N-glycidyl aromatic amine-based epoxy resins readily undergo hydrolysis followed by homopolymerization. Impurities in the resin may significantly accelerate the rate of reaction. The effect of the consequent loss of epoxide on the performance of an adhesive based on ERL 0500 has been studied. The high-temperature tensile-shear strength of Joints was markedly reduced when the adhesive was aged, before cure, for 24 hr at 60°C and 96% relative humidity. Some implications of these findings for aerospace applications of epoxy compounds are discussed.

    Notes: The room temperature aging of two epoxy adhesives, both of which are cured at 177°C and contain the moisture sensitive resin triglycidyl (4-aminophenol), has been examined. It has been found that hydrolysis of this resin is the major cause of reduction in epoxide content during aging. This in turn is largely responsible for the deterioration in the performance, especially at high temperatures, of bonded joints made with aged adhesive. The advantages of using high purity resins in adhesive formulations have been demonstrated.

    Notes: The linear temperature programmed pyrolysis of some commercial crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymers has been examined by the technique of pyrolysis-evolved gas-infrared analysis. Methyl methacrylate monomer, methanol, and carbon dioxide were detected in the pyrolysis gases. The profiles of rate of evolution against temperature were used to identify the presence of occluded monomer and thermally unstable and groups such as unsaturation. The evolution profiles for methyl methacrylate and methanol were found to be characteristic for each type of crosslink. Evolution of methanol between 250°C and 300°C, and between 300°C and 350°C has been attributed to condensation reactions of carboxylic acid and primary amide groups, respectively, with adjacent ester groups. The evolution profiles were used to distinguish between samples from different manufacturers, and to identify material in aircraft canopies.

    Notes: The use of computer-assisted infrared spectroscopy has allowed identification of three different boroxines and a boron trifluoride complex used as curing agents in cured epoxy resins. Boroxines were distinguished from a boron trifluoride complex by the B—O stretch absorption near 1400 cm-1 in the solid state. Detection of this absorption was enhanced by spectral subtraction methods in which the reference spectrum was that of the parent resin, or a suitably cured system of similar structure. Distinction between different boroxines was achieved by analysis of the gases evolved from samples heated at 300°C in nitrogen. Identification of the alcohol fraction of the original boroxine was improved by subtraction of the spectrum of water vapor. Boron trifluoride was detected in the gases evolved at 450-500°C from BF3-cured systems, and also in the liquid pyrolyzates. Further simplification of the 300°C gas spectra by subtraction of alcohol and carbon dioxide revealed the presence of acrolein in the gases from boroxine-cured systems while BF3-cured systems yielded acetaldehyde. These differences may be associated with different end groups in the cured resins.

    Notes: 23, 24-Dihydrocucurbitacin-F has been isolated from hemsleya amabilis. Its structure was studied in detail by 1H- and 13C-, 1H, 1H COSY, 1H, 13C HETCOR, 1H, 13C LOCOR, and 1D NOE NMR spectroscopy. All 1H- and 13C-spectral data for this compound have been assigned, and some assignments of 1H and 13C signals have been revised based on the 2D NMR spectra. In particular, previously unassigned methyl and hydroxy signals have been completely assigned via NOE and 1H, 13C-LOCOR experiments.

    Notes: The thickness of thin natural oxide films formed on silicon, nickel, aluminium, iron, tantalum and zirconium has been measured using nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) in combination with ion beam sputtering. It is shown that ion beam effects severely limit the use of AES and ion beam sputtering in measuring thin oxide thicknesses. Relatively non-destructive techniques such as NRA or angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provide more reliable information.
