Notes: Recently developed new techniques of ion formation from organic solids may become very useful in the application of mass spectrometers as detector units in liquid chromatography. Details of a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer coupling device are presented. Some features of this device, combined with a quadrupole secondary ion mass spectrometer, are demonstrated experimentally by the analysis of aqueous solutions of leucine and cytosine. It is demonstrated that the sensitivity of the liquid chromatography secondary ion mass spectrometry combination covers the concentration range occurring in liquid chromatography.

Description / Table of Contents: By DTA and TG measurements the single steps of the thermal decompositions of KMnO4, K2MnO4, and K3MnO4 have been studied.K3MnO4 is thermally stable up to 800°C; as a highly pure compound it might tolerate temperatures up to 1100°C without any chemical changes. K2MnO4, in contrast, becomes involved in a partially reversible reaction when heated to 640-680°C, forming K3MnO4 and Mn2O3. KMnO4 seems to decompose first into K2MnO4, K3MnO4 and MnO2, showing thermal interactions of these products on further heating. Some results on pure oxides of manganese are described.

Description / Table of Contents: By acidification of solutions of alkali molybdates alkali polymolybdates with very low content of alkali are precipitated. These polymolybdates are quite similar to molybdic acids resp. molybdic oxide hydrates. The polymolybdates (so called “molybdic-C-phases”) of ammonium, potassium, and sodium have the same type of crystal lattices (bcc). The conditions of preparation, the thermal decomposition and d-values of X-ray diagrams of these compounds are communicated and compared to those of MoO3 · H2O (white).
