Notes: Summary With low density polyethylene (LDPE) film as substrate, polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) film as filter, and an high pressure mercury (HPM 15) lamp as UV radiation source, the function of far UV radiation was examined. The results show that when the far UV (200–300 nm) was eliminated, the rate of polymerization of acrylic acid in the interlayer between two LDPE films initiated by benzophenone (BP) dramatically decreased, and the grafting efficiency became close to zero. The decisive effect of the far UV is further confirmed in UV-VIS spectra measuring the hydrogen abstraction reaction of the excited BP. For polymerization systems containing allylic hydrogens, this effect is smaller, while hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (HHPK) and benzoyldimethylketal (BDK), which are typical photocleaving initiators, show little sensitivity to the far UV. Based on an energy graph of the excited states, the bond energies and the relevant photochemical reactions a tentative interpretation of the results has been made.

Notes: Abstract Addition of water to stoichiometric 100% sulfuric acid increases the density untila maximum results near 87 mole% H2SO4. The density and conductivity maximaand viscosity minimum, the latter two near 75 mole%, are direct macroscopicresponses to microscopic quantum mechanical properties of H3O+ and of nearlysymmetric H-bond double-well potentials, as follows: (1) lack of H bonding tothe O atom of H3O+; (2) short, 2.4–2.6 A, O—O distances of nearly symmetricH bonds; and, (3) increased mobility of protons in such short H bonds, give riseto the density maximum via (1) and (2); (1) produces the viscosity minimum;and the conductivity maximum results from (2) and (3). A pronounced minimumnear 1030 cm−1 in the symmetric SO3 stretching Raman frequency of HSO4 −,observed near 45 mole% also results from double-well effects involving the shortH bonds of direct hydronium ion—bisulfate ion pair interactions. Estimates of theconcentrations of the (H3O+)(HSO4 −) and (H2SO4)(HSO4 −) pair interactions weredetermined from Raman intensity data and are given for compositions between42–100 mole%

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a backtracking method for constructing perfect hash functions from a given set of mapping functions. A hash indicator table is employed in the composition. By the nature of backtracking, the method can always find a perfect hash function when such a function does exist according to the composing scheme. Simulation results show that the probability of getting a perfect hash function by the backtracking method is much higher than by the single-pass and multipass methods previously proposed.

Notes: Abstract A new nuclide239Pa was produced by 50MeV/u18O bombardment of uranium. A radiochemical separation method was employed for preparing sources of239Pa. The protactinium isotope239Pa has been identified for the first time by the results observed from the decay of the239Pa and its daughter239U. The half-life of239Pa has been determined to be 106 ±30min.

Notes: Abstract  It is not uncommon for sarcomatous transformation of giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone to occur after radiation, but rarely does malignant transformation occur spontaneously, with less than 15 cases reported up to 1995. Only four of these cases have been documented in detail. We report two additional cases of GCT of bone spontaneously transforming or ”dedifferentiating” into osteosarcoma without radiation therapy. The first case is absolutely unique and most interesting in that the dedifferentiation process occurred in one of multiple GCT lung metastases 6 years after successful eradication of a primary tibial tumor. The right lung was resected due to development of a large tumor, and at pathologic examination, demonstrated several small nodules of conventional GCT and a much larger, 14-cm mass composed of a mixture of GCT and high-grade osteosarcoma. The second case involved a physician, who had a large tumor in the sacrum with vague symptoms for 8 years. Open biopsy revealed conventional, benign GCT of bone with a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst. Complete curettage 2 weeks later revealed, in addition to areas of conventional, benign GCT a second component of very high grade osteosarcoma. Both patients died less than 1.5 years from diagnosis. This report of osteosarcomatous transformation of a conventional GCT of bone strengthens the theory that there is a mesenchymal cell line in GCT that may spontaneously tansform to sarcoma.

Notes: Abstract We report an unusual case of a giant femoral abscess caused by postoperative osteomyelitis after treating a fracture of the femoral shaft. The patient ignored it until the abscess began to interfere with knee flexion, but no symptoms of inflammation such as fever, pain or abnormal laboratory values were found. Within the marrow cavity, many plasma cells produced immunoglobulins G and M, and the level of these substances in the abscess fluid connected to the bony focus were higher than the serum levels. It was concluded that the inflammation in this case signified a peculiarity in a primarily chronic process.

Notes: Summary Ventriculo-subgaleal shunting was used for temporary decompression of hypertensive hydrocephalus. Pre- and post-shunt computed tomography was utilized in five cases as a method for detecting complications and determining shunt function. A clear-cut clinical improvement and stabilization followed the subgaleal diversion, but nevertheless usually only a mild decrease in ventricular size was demonstrated after shunting.

Notes: Abstract A newly isolated mutant of the symbiotic bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii, Rt79, is deficient in exopolysaccharide synthesis. It induced nodules defective in nitrogen fixation on clover (Trifolium pratense L.). The expression of plant (ENOD2, leghemoglobin) and bacterial (ropA, nifH) genes was studied by in-situ hybridization. The absence of nifH transcripts was noticed. Mutant-induced nodules showed changes in nodule development, such as precocious degeneration of bacteroids and deviating bacteroid ultrastructure, from the moment that bacteria were released from infection threads, and reduction of the number of infected plant cells. Abnormal bacteroids still invaded plant cells but in the interzone between the pre-fixation zone and the nitrogen fixing zone the maturation process required for nitrogen fixation was eventually blocked. These observations as well as the gene-expression data point to a failure in bacteroid development from the onset of the infection process rather than to a sudden block in the infection process.

Notes: Abstract Au particles dispersed thin metal oxide films were prepared from precursor films containing HAuCl4 with H2S gas diffusion method. HAuCl4 was uniformly dissolved in the films as promoted by hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). The mechanism of the Au particle formation was studied. It was found that HAuCl4 was converted directly to Au metal particles upon contacting with H2S gas. Au particles generated by this method were characterized with small particle size, sharp size distribution and high volume fraction in the films. The surface plasma resonance absorption of Au particles shifted to longer wavelength when TiO2 component was introduced in the matrix.

Notes: Abstract The Na+/H+ exchanger is a widely distributed integral membrane protein that is responsible for pH regulation in mammalian tissues. We have cloned and analyzed the NHE1 isoform of the mouse genomic Na+/H+exchanger. A clone from a mouse genomic library contained the NHE1 promoter region and the 5′-untranslated region. It also contained the first 121 amino acids of the coding region of the Na+/H+ exchanger. A splice site occurred after amino acid 121, at the same region as in the human NHE1 gene. The deduced amino terminal coding sequence was 76 and 88% identical to the human and rat NHE1 sequences respectively. The 5′-untranslated region was highly homologous to that of other species and two minicistrons contained in the human Na+/H+ exchanger were present in the mouse sequence. The results show that the deduced protein sequence of the mouse NHE1 gene has a high level of homology with other species and that the splice site of the first intron is conserved. These results suggest that the first large intron may play an important role in the NHE1 gene expression.
