Notes: Summary The purpose of the study was to examine long-term nicotine substitution and its variability during use of a nicotine patch. In two smoking cessation studies a 16-h nicotine patch, releasing 15 mg nicotine, was applied daily for 16 h over 12 weeks, to 167 smokers. Salivary cotinine was highly correlated with plasma cotinine (r = 0.93), and the concentration of cotinine in a single sample in the afternoon was well correlated with the AUCcotinine over 24 h (r = 0.94). The salivary cotinine concentration after 1 week in 60 abstainers was 183 ng · ml−. After 3, 6 and 12 weeks the cotinine concentrations were 86%, 79% and 59% of the 1-week value. The degree of nicotine compensation attained by the patch after 1 week was 52% (SD 24%) in subjects who succeeded in stopping smoking for at least 3 weeks. A quarter of the subjects achieved a compensation of less than 35% of their usual nicotine intake. Nicotine substitution with this 16-h nicotine patch was stable and the risk of overcompensation was small in this group of smokers.

Notes: Summary The aim was to study the methodological aspects of the muscle twitch interpolation technique in estimating the maximal force of contraction in the quadriceps muscle utilizing commercial muscle testing equipment. Six healthy subjects participated in seven sets of experiments testing the effects on twitch size of potentiation, time lag after potentiation, magnitude of voluntary force, stimulus amplitude, stimulus duration, angle of the knee, and angle of the hip. In addition, the consequences of submaximal potentiation on the estimation of maximal force from twitch sizes were studied in five healthy subjects. We found an increase in twitch size with increasing levels of potentiation and twitch size decreased exponentially following potentiation. We found a curvilinear relationship between twitch size and voluntary force, and these properties were more obvious when the stimulation intensity of the preload was reduced. The relationship between twitch size and force was only linear, for force levels greater than 25% of maximum. It was concluded that to achieve an accurate estimate of true maximal force of muscle contraction, it would be necessary for the subject to be able to perform at least 75% of the true maximal force.

Notes: Abstract The magnetoresistance of thin magnesium films in the weakly localized regime has been measured at 4.2 K as a function of film thickness. The results are analysed in a new and simple way based on the theory of Hikami et al. [1]. We use only two adjustable parameters, the inelastic relaxation time τ i and the spin-orbit scattering time τso. Whereas τso is found to be almost independent of thickness, τ i changes significantly. The variation of τ i with thickness is discussed in the light of the theories for the enhanced electron-electron interaction, but it does not seem to tie up with any of the existing theories.
