Description: We assessed the abundance of microplastic (0.2 - 5 mm) in drift line sediments from three sites in Kiel Fjord, Western Baltic. The first site is intensively used by beach visitors, the second is in close proximity to a sewage plant and the third is polluted with large-sized plastic litter. Samples were split into three grain size classes (0.2 – 0.5, 0.5 – 1.0, 1.0 – 5.0 mm), washed with a calciumchloride solution and filtered at 0.2 mm. Filters were then visually inspected and a total of 180 fragments were classified as microplastic, of which 39 % were analysed using Raman spectroscopy. At the site with intense beach use as well as at the site that is close to a sewage plant 1.8 and 4.5 particles (fibers plus fragments) per kg of dry sediment were found, respectively, while particle abundances reached 30.2 per kg of dry sediment at the site with high litter loads. Our data suggest that intensity of human use and proximity to a sewage plant are not necessarily reliable predictors for high loads of microplastics in beach sediments, while the fragmentation of large plastic debris at site seems to be a relevant contamination source.

Description: Experiments were performed with a 12 mm long and 1.2 mm diameter sapphire tube at pressures above 12 MPa and temperatures of 5°C. The tube was filled with sand (mean grain size 0.29 mm, maximum grain size 0.7 mm, minimum grain size 0.063 mm and modal grain size distribution). Distilled water, which was saturated with methane, was pumped through the sand at a constant flow rate of 0.75 ml/min. Gas hydrates eventually formed from the gas saturated solution.

Description: This dataset consists of the results particulate matter geochemical analyses of sediment cores that were taken during the cruise AL534/2 in March 2020. The research areas were the coastal waters close to major river mounds off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany. During this cruise, samples were collected for the JPI Oceans project HOTMIC. The research objective of HOTMIC is the investigation of distribution and transport of microplastic particles from the European coast to the garbage accumulations in the North Atlantic gyre. Sediment samples were taken with a mini multi corer and, in one case, with a mini box corer. Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, total sulfur and CaCO3 contents of the solid phase were determined with an elemental analyzer.
