The sediment budget for the Kieler Bucht, a semi-enclosed sea formed in a relatively
homogeneous lithology of Pleistocene till in the Western Baltic, has been refined by utilising
new data from independent approaches. Analysis of the detailed network of sub-bottom
profiles from the "POSEIDON 23" cruise allowed clear definition of the postglacial muddy
sediment deposits. Estimation of sand deposited is based on the pattern of surficial sediment
distribution. Volumes of till eroded are calculated from survey, cartographic, and erosion data
of the cliffs and submarine platforms around the bay. Best estimates for the sediment balance
are an erosion of 2.6-2.9 X 109 m3 of till from the coast and sea floor, resulting in a sand
production of 0.8-0.9 X 109 m3 and a deposition of about 5.5 X 109 m3 of muddy sediment.
Congruence of various models of till eroded in relation to measured volume of sand and
muddy deposits, suggests that the sediment budget is in balance, and that less than 10% of the muddy deposits need to be accounted for by invoking transportation into the Bucht.
