Notes: Crystal growth rates of spherulites of β-phase poly(propylene)s and of an ethylene/propene block copolymer, crystallized from the melt, have been investigated in the temperature range of 122 to 146°C. On the basis of the regime theory, a transition between regime II and III is found at ΔT ≈ 37-43,5 K. The nucleation constant for β-phase poly(propylene)based on the current theory of crystal growth was determined, and the fold surface free energy of β-phase poly(propylene) was estimated from the nucleation constant for different samples to lie between 48,2 and 55,2 erg/cm2 (1 erg = 10-7 J).

Notes: Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction experiments on ß-nucleated poly(propylene) were made on samples crystallized at different temperatures. The crystal perfection was shown to vary with crystallization temperature. The observed multiple peaks could be related to a ß1-phase with defective inclination of the chains, a recrystallized or original ß2-phase of more perfect inclination, and the α-phase.

Notes: To get hydrogenated polybutadiene-polymethyl methacrylate (HPB-b-PMMA) block copolymer to be used as a compatibilizer for blends of polyolefin/polar polymer, PB-b-PMMA was synthesized by anionic-free radical mechanism transformation polymerization. Selective extraction, gradient elution thin layer chromatography, and oil-oil emulsion separation techniques were tried to attempt to separate the copolymerization products. Hydrogenation of the PB sequence in PB-b-PMMA yielded HPB-b-PMMA. The compatibilizing function of PB-b-PMMA was shown in blending experiments. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Crosslinked polystyrene microspheres of a diameter of the order of more than 2 μm and a narrow particle diameter distribution were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The dependence of various parameters such as an electrolyte (NaCl), an initiator (K2S2O8), the phase volume ratio, the reaction temperature and time on the diameter and the particle size distribution has been discussed.

Notes: High performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization - time of flight - mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), on-line CE-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (CE-ESI-MS) and on-line LC-ESI-MS have been employed to characterize a heterogeneous glycoprotein, recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) expressed from Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. The analysis was demonstrated through two specific levels of detail: the intact protein and tryptic digests of the protein. Six glycoforms of rHuEPO were separated by HPCE; seventeen tryptic fragments in a total of 21 nonglycosylated and glycosylated peptides were characterized; the O-linked glycopeptides were analyzed directly by CE-ESI-MS and LC-ESI-MS. In particular, four glycans of O-acetylation of sialic acid were identified in the O-linked glycosylated fragments. The molecular weight of rHuEPO was accurately determined by MALDI-TOF-MS.

Notes: Human parotid salivary glycoproteins separated by gradient sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electroblotted onto nitrocellulose have been investigated using a battery of biotinylated lectin probes of characterized sugar specificity. Lectin binding, detected on blots using avidin-biotin complex (ABC) and a chemiluminescence generating substrate, was recorded on photographic film and compared with the original fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) stained blots or with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250-stained gels run in parallel. A number of glycoprotein bands which were undetected by protein stains or the periodic acid Schiff reaction were revealed by lectins. Binding by lectins from Concanavalia ensiformis, Lens culinaris, Limax flavus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Ricinus communis, Triticum vulgaris, Lotus tetragonobulus and Ulex europaeus indicated that sialylated and fucosylated triantennary and bisected, N-linked complex sugar chains were present on many glycoproteins in addition to the major glycosylated proline-rich glycoprotein (GI). Binding with lectins from Arachis hypogaea and Dolichos biflorus indicated that the O-linked sugar chains were confined to the α-heavy chain of Ig A. Comparison of lectin binding in samples from five healthy individuals revealed differences in a number of flycoproteins in addition to the previously characterized GI and CON 1/CON 2 polymorphisms and demonstrated that the H blood group antigen was expressed mainly on GI in parotid saliva. This study will be used as a basis upon which to study salivary glycoproteins in diseases affecting parotid glands.

Description: Purpose To determine the role of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics as biomarkers for the therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in acute peripheral nerve injury. Materials and Methods Forty-four adult rats received subepineurial microinjection of MSCs (n = 22) or phosphate buffered saline (PBS, n = 22) 1 week after the sciatic nerve trunk crush injury. Sequential fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging, T2 measurement, DTI and sciatic nerve functional assessment were performed at a 3.0 Tesla MR unit over an 8-week follow-up, with histological assessments performed at regular intervals. The sciatic nerve function index, T2 value, and DTI metrics, including fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity, radial diffusivity (RD), and mean diffusivity values of the distal stumps of crushed nerves were measured and compared between the two groups. Results Nerves treated with MSCs showed better functional recovery and exhibited more pronounced nerve regeneration compared with nerves treated with PBS. T2 values in nerves treated with MSCs or PBS showed a similar change pattern ( P  = 0.174), while FA and RD values in nerves treated with MSCs showed more rapid return (one week earlier) to baseline level than nerves treated with PBS ( P  = 0.045; 0.035). Nerves treated with MSCs had higher FA and lower RD values than nerves treated with PBS during the period from 2 to 3 weeks after surgery ( P  ≤ 0.0001, 0.004; P  = 0.004, 0.006). Conclusion FA and RD values derived from DTI might be used as sensitive biomarkers for detecting the therapeutic effect of stem cells in acute peripheral nerve crush injuries. J. Magn. Reson. Description: Correct estimation of the forecast and observational error covariance matrices is crucial for the accuracy of a data assimilation algorithm. In this article we propose a new structure for the forecast error covariance matrix to account for limited ensemble size and model error. An adaptive procedure combined with a second-order least squares method is applied to estimate the inflated forecast and adjusted observational error covariance matrices. The proposed estimation methods and new structure for the forecast error covariance matrix are tested on the well-known Lorenz-96 model, which is associated with spatially correlated observational systems. Our experiments show that the new structure for the forecast error covariance matrix and the adaptive estimation procedure lead to improvement of the assimilation results.
