Notes: Introduction: The atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is considered by most authorities to represent a superficial or minimally invasive variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma that most often presents as a solitary nodule on the sun-exposed skin of the elderly. Among the rarest variants is the clear cell AFX, a lesion which raises consideration to a differential diagnosis encompassing a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic clear cell proliferations. Methods:  We describe three cases of a distinctive cutaneous neoplasm arising in the sun-exposed skin of elderly patients. In all cases, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue was available for analysis. The histology in concert with the immunophenotype was held to be diagnostic of the clear cell variant of AFX.Results:  All tumors comprised sheets of large cells with foamy cytoplasms and hyperchromatic, polyploid nuclei manifesting frequent and atypical mitoses. The critical cells in our cases expressed CD68 but none of CD3, CD20, CD34, S-100 protein, muscle-specific actin, factor XIIIa, Melan-A, carcinoembryonic antigen, or cytokeratin. Conclusion:  Although typical examples of AFX provoke diagnostic consideration of spindle cell cancers of the skin (most often spindle cell melanoma, spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma, and leiomyosarcoma), the clear cell variant raises other differential diagnostic considerations instead. These include balloon cell melanoma, sebaceous carcinoma, pleomorphic liposarcoma, chordoma, parachordoma, tricholemmal carcinoma and clear cell squamous cell carcinoma. A diagnosis of AFX is one of exclusion; one must employ immunohistochemical markers to rule out the aforementioned differential diagnostic considerations. By reporting the fifth, sixth and seventh cases of clear cell AFX, we hope to alert dermatopathologists to this distinctive and unusual neoplasm, recognition of which is essential to avoid under- or over-diagnosis and inappropriate therapy.

Notes: Abstract Recent research on surface properties of materials using X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet radiation suggest some relationships in common to lunar research. New and intense sources of vacuum ultraviolet continuum radiation may offer the possibility of probing the surface properties of lunar materials and may permit some experimental demonstrations of the surface phenomena observed on the Moon.

Notes: Summary A two-year-old child who had had palliative surgery as a neonate for an absent right atrioventricular connection and double-inlet ventricle was shown to be developmentally retarded. Trisomy for the short arm of chromosome 8 was demonstrated, resulting from a familial 8:13 translocation, with a high risk of recurrence. Although the specific features of this case are unique, it illustrates the importance of chromosome analysis in any dysmorphic infant whose heart defect places prolonged survival in doubt.

Notes: Abstract This study examined differences in the physiological and cognitive response patterns among peptic ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis, and healthy group subjects to two types of stressors-slides of autopsies and imagined scenes involving conflicts and attitudes proposed to be associated with the two psychosomatic disorders. Ten subjects were assessed in each group. Results indicated that the ulcer patients demonstrated a heart rate accelerative trend, while arthritic and normal subjects showed significant deceleration, in response to the aversive slides of autopsies. Ulcer patients also reported paying less attention to the slides, and experiencing more anxiety when viewing them, relative to the other subjects. In response to the imagined scenes, the arthritic patients responded with more heart rate acceleration, apparently because of the greater emotional imagery produced by the scenes in these subjects. Finally, self-report and interview data did not lend support to a derivative of the specificity-of-attitude model of psychosomatic disorders.

Notes: Summary The effects on selected histochemical and morphological parameters of anabolic steroid administration and of high-intensity sprint running, separately, and in combination, were studied in young adult male rats. Dianabol (methandrostenolone) 1 mg/day for 8 weeks had no significant effects on phosphorylase or glycogen staining intensities and on fiber area in skeletal muscles of either trained or sedentary animals. The program of sprint training resulted in significantly decreased intensities of phosphorylase in all ten regions of the gastrocnemius, plantaris, and soleus muscles that were studied. Glycogen localization was significantly increased with training in five regions of the gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles which contained predominantly fast-twitch fibers. No changes in fiber area occurred with the training program. We conclude from these results that (a) normal androgen levels in young, healthy male animals are sufficiently high so that the intake of large doses of anabolic steroid does not result in the stimulation of glycogen metabolism or hypertrophy of skeletal muscle; (b) the changes induced by high-intensity, short-duration sprint training suggest that the existing glycolytic capacity of muscle is adequate to supply the muscles energy needs even during the stress of very strenuous exercise, and that more fast-twitch fibers were recruited by the exercise regimen than slow-twitch fibers.

Notes: Abstract Most of the curriculum design models within the technical-scientific approach utilise the rational and sequential process of designing and inter-relating the various elements of the design process. While this procedure may be efficient and adequate for conventional education in which the designers are professional science educators, there is doubt if it satisfies the particular needs of distance education. The experience accumulated through a multi-disciplinary team approach to distance learning courseware development for higher education at the University of Southern Queensland Distance Education Centre motivated this study which primarily focused on a search for an alternative approach to curriculum development with a more satisfactory functional value. Using selected units in Engineering as a focus, an experiment was designed in which a variant of the classical Wheeler model was used. This paper reports the results of this experiment. The implications for contemporary curriculum development initiatives in science especially within distance education settings are pointed out.
