    Description: To trace spatial variations in Holocene reservoir ages of surface and subsurface waters we studied narrowly spaced 14C records of planktic foraminifera in three high-sedimentation rate cores from the Nordic Seas, the Barents Sea continental margin and eastern Fram Strait. The two northern cores reveal a distinct Early Holocene 14C plateau in dates on the subsurface dweller Neogloboquadrina pachyderma at 9.3–9.1 14C ka. The plateau was tuned to an atmospheric 14C plateau at 9.0–8.7 14C ka that spans 10.2–9.6 calendar ka. These two plateau boundaries provide robust age control points to estimate short-term changes in sedimentation rate and to correlate paleoceanographic signals over 900 km along the West Spitsbergen Current. The difference between planktic and atmospheric 14C plateau ages suggests local 14C reservoir ages of 370–400 yr. Planktic foraminifera species that inhabit different water masses document different reservoir ages. By comparison, the subpolar N. incompta reveals a reservoir age of 150 yr, probably formed in well-mixed Atlantic-sourced waters during winter. The near-surface dweller Turborotalita quinqueloba shows an age of 290 yr in the Fram Strait, but one of 720 yr at the Barents Sea continental margin. The latter age suggests a calcification within old, meltwater-enriched Arctic surface waters admixed by the East Spitsbergen Current. Likewise, we assign an elevated reservoir age of 760 yr on mixed species at a Norwegian Sea site near 71°N to Preboreal meltwaters that spread from northern Norway far west, also documented by the spatial distribution of a coeval δ13C minimum of N. pachyderma.

    Description: Upwelling intensity in the South China Sea has changed over glacial-interglacial cycles in response to orbital-scale changes in the East Asian Monsoon. Here, we evaluate new multi-proxy records of two sediment cores from the north-eastern South China Sea to uncover millennial-scale changes in winter monsoondriven upwelling over glacial Terminations I and II. On the basis of U/Th-based speleothem chronology, we compare these changes with sediment records of summer monsoondriven upwelling east of South Vietnam. Ocean upwelling is traced by reduced (UK'37-based) temperature and increased nutrient and productivity estimates of sea surface water (d13C on planktic foraminifera, accumulation rates of alkenones, chlorins, and total organic carbon). Accordingly, strong winter upwelling occurred north-west of Luzon (Philippines) during late Marine Isotope Stage 6.2, Heinrich (HS) and Greenland stadials (GS) HS-11, GS-26, GS-25, HS-1, and the Younger Dryas. During these stadials, summer upwelling decreased off South Vietnam and sea surface salinity reached a maximum suggesting a drop in monsoon rains, concurrent with speleothem records of aridity in China. In harmony with a stadial-to-interstadial see-saw pattern, winter upwelling off Luzon in turn was weak during interstadials, in particular those of glacial Terminations I and II, when summer upwelling culminated east of South Vietnam. Most likely, this upwelling terminated widespread deep-water stratification, coeval with the deglacial rise in atmospheric CO2. Yet, a synchronous maximum in precipitation fostered estuarine overturning circulation in the South China Sea, in particular as long as the Borneo Strait was closed when sea level dropped below -40 m.

    Description: Deep water formation in the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean is widely thought to influence deglacial CO2 rise and climate change; here we suggest that deep water formation in the North Pacific may also play an important role. We present paired radiocarbon and boron isotope data from foraminifera from sediment core MD02-2489 at 3640 m in the North East Pacific. These show a pronounced excursion during Heinrich Stadial 1, with benthic-planktic radiocarbon offsets dropping to ~350 years, accompanied by a decrease in benthic d11B. We suggest this is driven by the onset of deep convection in the North Pacific, which mixes young shallow waters to depth, old deep waters to the surface, and low-pH water from intermediate depths into the deep ocean. This deep water formation event was likely driven by an increase in surface salinity, due to subdued atmospheric/monsoonal freshwater flux during Heinrich Stadial 1. The ability of North Pacific Deep Water (NPDW) formation to explain the excursions seen in our data is demonstrated in a series of experiments with an intermediate complexity Earth system model. These experiments also show that breakdown of stratification in the North Pacific leads to a rapid ~30 ppm increase in atmospheric CO2, along with decreases in atmospheric d13C and D14C, consistent with observations of the early deglaciation. Our inference of deep water formation is based mainly on results from a single sediment core, and our boron isotope data are unavoidably sparse in the key HS1 interval, so this hypothesis merits further testing. However we note that there is independent support for breakdown of stratification in shallower waters during this period, including a minimum in d15N, younging in intermediate water 14C, and regional warming. We also re-evaluate deglacial changes in North Pacific productivity and carbonate preservation in light of our new data, and suggest that the regional pulse of export production observed during the Bølling-Allerød is promoted by relatively stratified conditions, with increased light availability and a shallow, potent nutricline. Overall, our work highlights the potential of NPDW formation to play a significant and hitherto unrealized role in deglacial climate change and CO2 rise.
