    Notes: Synchronous scanning fluorescence spectroscopy is a simple, cost-effective method for fingerprinting many petroleum contaminants in ground-water and soil samples. The extraction of contaminated ground-water and soil samples with water and cyclohexane followed by the synchronous scanning fluorescence spectrophotometry of the organic extract is described for over 20 petroleum product standards and actual samples. This method allows for the classification and identification of aromatic-containing products such as: gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, various grades of fuel oil, and asphalt. This analytical method is more efficient than chromatographic methods typically used for quantitative analysis of petroleum contaminants and its spectra are easier to interpret for fingerprinting purposes. Several case studies of its use in determining among alternate sources of contamination are presented.

    Notes: The carbonate platforms of the Wetterstein Formation of the Eastern Alps (Drau Range and Northern Calcareous Alps) show a distinct facies zonation of reefs and lagoons. While some lagoonal areas were episodically emerged and formed lagoonal islands, others remained permanently flooded. The scale of near surface, meteoric or marine diagenesis was related to this lagoonal topography. At shallow burial depth, cementation was dominated by altered marine solutions, which additionally caused recrystallization of metastable constituents of the sediment and earlier marine cements (high magnesian calcite, aragonite) connected with a carbon and oxygen isotopic change to more negative values.Deeper burial cementation shows a succession with two types of saddle dolomite and three types of blocky calcite. Carbon and oxygen isotopic values of these cements show a trend towards more negative values from the first to the last generation, in the following succession: clear saddle dolomite—zoned blocky calcite—cloudy saddle dolomite—post-corrosion blocky calcite—replacive blocky calcite. Fluid inclusion studies of the carbonate cements are interpreted to indicate a deeper burial temperature development that first increases from 175 to 317°C, followed by a temperature decrease to 163–260°C, and subsequent increase up to 316°C, whereby the samples of the Drau Range always show the lowest values. Calculations of the isotopic composition of the water, from which the carbonate cements were precipitated, yielded positive δ18O values from 6.66 to 17.81%o (SMOW), which are characteristic for formation and/or metamorphic waters. Also, the isotopic compositions of the palaeofluids probably changed during deeper burial diagenesis, following the temperature development.

    Notes: The ability of sperm from the black-footed abalone Haliotis iris to take up foreign DNA in solution has been demonstrated. The efficiency of DNA uptake is related to the conditions of electroporation, including field strength (625 V cm−1, 1000 V cm−1), pulse length (18.6 ms, 27.4ms) and number of pulses (1, 2), and DNA concentration (20, 100 μg ml−1). Sperm motility decreased with increased field strength and pulse number. At a field strength of 625 V cm−1, neither the pulse length nor pulse number enhanced DNA uptake. A 40% enhancement in DNA uptake was observed when the sperm were shocked at 1000 V cm−1 with two long pulses (27.4 ms each). Linear regression analysis revealed that pulse number (p= 0.013) and field strength (P=0.039) were the most important factors in sperm–DNA interaction. Higher DNA concentration enhanced sperm DNA uptake irrespective of field strength, pulse length and pulse number. The optimal electroporation conditions for DNA uptake were 1000 V cm‘, with two pulses of 27.4 ms each, and a DNA concentration of 100 μg ml−1.

    Notes: Until recently the Younger Dryas cooling event was thought to be restricted to the North Atlantic region. However, preliminary evidence based on magnetic susceptibility and stable isotope data from Lake Hetongchahannor, a hypersaline alkaline lake in Inner Mongolia indicates that this event is observed in NE Asia. In addition we find indications of wetter climatic conditions between 9000 and 6000 yr BP, possibly due to increased monsoon activity, followed by a progressive aridification towards the present time.

    Notes: Abstract Vascular corrosion casting methods were used to elucidate the pathological effects of X-cell disease on the blood supply to the gills of the Antarctic teleost, Pagothenia borchgrevinki (Boulenger, 1902). Afferent and efferent branchial arteries were patent in X-cell diseased fish; however, the blood supply to the lamellae was markedly reduced or obliterated in areas in which there was a predominance of X-cells. The present authors believe that the tissue hyperplasia associated with X-cell disease results in the compression of the lamellar vascular bed which leads eventually to the occlusion of vessels.

    Notes: This descriptive study provides data relevant to two currently popular views of the male nursing image. Firstly, that male nurses tend to prefer the more technological or administrative aspects of nursing and secondly, that they exhibit to an unusually high degree what are commonly thought of as being amongst the more feminine personality traits. The sample consisted of 91 male RAF nurses working in RAF hospitals, and was of predominantly English nationality. Of the 39 SRNs in the sample 65-8% preferred general nursing to the more technical areas such as intensive care, operating theatre, orthopaedic and renal. The preference for general nursing was even greater, 76-1%, amongst the 30 SENs surveyed. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and a Level of Aspiration Test (LOA) were used to obtain measures of the personality traits of the sample. The scores obtained showed that the male RAF nurses were significantly less psychotic than male civilian nurses, male civilians or servicemen of similar age. They were also significantly less extraverted than servicemen as a whole and significantly more stable than the male civilian norm. A comparison of SRNs with SENs revealed only two significant differences. The SRNs were significantly less extraverted and had a significantly higher level of aspiration than the SENs.

    Notes: A comparison of liver ultrasound and liver biopsy histology was made on 54 paired investigations from 28 patients about to receive or already receiving methotrexate for severe psoriasis. Ultrasound scans were reported as normal, or abnormal showing either fatty change or fibrosis. Eighteen of the scans were reported as normal and in no instance did the simultaneously-obtained liver biopsy show significant fibrosis. Thirty-one of the scans were reported as showing fatty change without fibrosis; in 12 cases the liver histology showed mild but significant fibrosis and in four cases fibrosis was of sufficient severity to necessitate methotrexate withdrawal. Five of the scans were reported as showing fibrosis and in all the biopsy showed significant fibrosis. This was of sufficient degree to necessitate methotrexate withdrawal in two cases. No patient with a normal ultrasound scan showed significant fibrosis and thus we concluded that such patients may be spared liver biopsy and safely continue with methotrexate therapy. Ultrasound cannot reliably distinguish between fatty change and fibrosis, so all patients with abnormal scans require liver biopsy.

    Description: Sulfate-reducing bacteria are known to mediate dolomite formation under hypersaline conditions, but details of the crystal nucleation process are still poorly constrained. Our laboratory study demonstrates for the first time that Desulfobulbus mediterraneus, a marine sulfate-reducing bacterium, mediates primary precipitation of Mg-rich dolomite under anoxic conditions in media replicating modern seawater chemistry at low temperature (21 °C). Precipitation of crystals was associated with extracellular polymeric substances in a monospecific biofilm, providing templates for nucleation by altering the molar Mg/Ca ratio. After initial nucleation of single nanospherulites (∼50 nm), growth was mediated by aggregation, resulting in spherulites of ∼2–3 μm in diameter. Nucleation led to differences in Mg/Ca ratios and δ44/40Ca values among the organic material (i.e., biofilm including cells and extracellular polymeric substances; 0.87 ± 0.01 [2 SD] and 0.48‰ ± 0.11‰ [2 SE], respectively), the crystals (1.02 ± 0.11 [2 SD] and 〈−0.08‰ ± 0.24‰ [2 SE], respectively), and the liquid bulk medium after mineral precipitation (4.53 ± 0.04 [2 SD] and 1.10‰ ± 0.24‰ [2 SE], respectively). These data indicate a two-step fractionation process involved in the sequestration of Ca from the solution into the crystal lattice of the mineral precipitated. Our results demonstrate the capability of extracellular polymeric substances to overcome kinetic inhibition, fostering the formation of kinetically less favorable Mg-rich dolomite, and they also question the applicability of the Ca isotopic system as a proxy for paleogeochemistry of seawater.
