Description: Due to the strong interest in geochemical CO2-fluid-rock interaction in the context of geological storage of CO2 a growing number of research groups have used a variety of different experimental ways to identify important geochemical dissolution or precipitation reactions and – if possible – quantify the rates and extent of mineral or rock alteration. In this inter-laboratory comparison the gas-fluid-mineral reactions of three samples of rock-forming minerals have been investigated by 11 experimental labs. The reported results point to robust identification of the major processes in the experiments by most groups. The dissolution rates derived from the changes in composition of the aqueous phase are consistent overall, but the variation could be reduced by using similar corrections for changing parameters in the reaction cells over time. The comparison of experimental setups and procedures as well as of data corrections identified potential improvements for future gas-fluid-rock studies.

Notes: High resolution imaging of gynaecological tissue offers the potential for identifying pathological changes at early stages when interventions are more effective. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high resolution high speed optical imaging technology which is analogous to ultrasound B–mode imaging except reflections of light are detected rather than sound. The OCT technology is capable of being integrated with laparoscopy for real–time subsurface imaging. In this report, the feasibility of OCT for differentiating normal and pathologic laparoscopically–accessible gynaecologic tissue is demonstrated. Differentiation is based on architectural changes of in vitro tissue morphology. OCT has the potential to improve conventional laparoscopy by enabling subsurface imaging near the level of histopathology.

Notes: During the last twenty years, the UK has made steady progress in the understanding of the ‘lead in drinking water’issue and towards compliance with a lead standard which is more stringent than elsewhere in Europe.Evaluating the needs for corrective action has not been straightforward because of the difficulties in characterizing the pick-up of lead from lead pipes throughout whole water supply zones. Survey methods have developed over the past twenty years as the behaviour of lead pipes has become better understood, but some ambiguities may still need to be addressed.Information from Bristol Water suggests that compliance with a new lead standard of 10 μg/1 may be feasible by corrective water treatment in some zones, based on the already accepted practice of dosing with phosphoric acid, depending on how this more stringent standard is implemented. This view is also held by Anglian Water, based on their extensive experience with phosphoric acid dosing (without any significant problems) since the mid-1980s. Therefore total lead pipe replacement, at substantially higher cost, can likely be avoided in many zones.

Notes: 1. The effects of systemic hypoxia, arterial occlusion and muscle exercise on blood flow and oxygen uptake of the hind limb of anaesthetized areflexic dogs were assessed. The control responses were compared to those elicited after administration of meclofenamic acid (2 mg/kg, i.v.).2. Meclofenamic acid reduced resting blood flow by approximately 20%.3. The increase in blood flow during 6 min periods of hypoxia was inversely related to arterial oxygen saturation and this relationship was not altered significantly by meclofenamic acid.4. The magnitude of the reactive hyperaemias following arterial occlusion for 5-40 s was dependent on the occlusion time. The peak changes in vascular conductance relative to the resting values were similar before and after administration of meclofenamic acid.5. Direct stimulation of the muscles of the hind limb with 0.5-5 Hz produced frequency-dependent increases in blood flow and oxygen uptake to the limb. Although these responses were depressed after meclofenamic acid, the relationship between blood flow and oxygen uptake was not changed. The responses to stimulation with 10 Hz were not affected by meclofenamic acid.6. An isolated chick rectum, superfused with re-oxygenated venous blood from the hind limb during muscle stimulation at 10 Hz showed an initial relaxation, followed by contraction. The contraction was abolished after administration of meclofenamic acid.7. From these results it appears that the release of prostaglandins is not essential for hyperaemais associated with vessel occlusion, systemic hypoxia or muscle exercise.

Notes: 1. An online analogue computer was used to measure myocardial contractility as the ratio dP/dt/IIT where dP/dt is maximum rate of change of left ventricular pressure and IIT is integrated isometric tension.2. In the open thorax anaesthetized dog, max (dP/dt) and dP/dt/IIT were compared during alterations in preload, by partial vena caval occlusion, and changes in after-load obtained by acetylcholine injections and by partial occlusion of the descending thoracic aorta.3. A fall in preload lowered max (dP/dt) but did not alter dP/dt/IIT A rise and fall in afterload produced respectively an increase and decrease in max (dP/dt) but dp/dt/IIT was unaltered.4. From expanded time base recordings, the time from the start of aortic flow (EM flowmeter) to max (dP/dt) was measured to indicate the relationship between valve opening and rnax (dP/dt). At low preload or elevated afterload the aortic valve opened well after max (dP/dt) had been reached. When the afterload fell, max (dP/dt) occurred after the opening of the aortic valve.5. Positive inotropic stimulation following intravenous isoprenaline caused a marked elevation in dP/dt/IIT. However, the rise in max (dP/dt) was attenuated in comparison to dP/dt/IIT by a marked fall in afterload and thus early opening of the aortic valve.6. It is concluded that max (dP/dt) is very sensitive to alterations in preload or afterload but the index——-dP/dt/IIT is normalized so that changes in end diastolic fibre length do not alter this index. When the afterload falls max (dP/dt) is no longer determined in the isovolumic phase of contraction so that magnitude of rnax (dP/dt) is reduced. However, it is an empirical finding that IIT also falls so that the ratio is unaltered. dP/dt/IIT is a useful index of myocardial contractility that is insensitive to changes in preload or afterload.

Notes: 1. Changes in heart rate were evoked by atrial pacing in anaesthetized dogs with no pretreatment and in dogs given reserpine or guanethidine for 72 h. The effect of alterations in heart rate were related to two indices of myocardial contractility: the maximal rate of change of left ventricular pressure (dp/dt), and an index which was independent of initial fibre length (dp/dt)/ITT, where IIT is integrated isometric tension.2. An increase in heart rate in control dogs was accompanied by a rise in both dp/dt and (dp/dt)/IIT confirming that the Bowditch staircase does exist in the intact ventricle. The regression line relating heart rate to (dp/dt)/IIT was significantly steeper than that relating heart rate to dp/dt because the reduction in left ventricular preload at high heart rate tends to attenuate the rise in dp/dt.3. Reserpine, but not guanethidine pretreatment was accompanied by either a slight decrease or no change in (dp/dt)/IIT during pacing.4. Acute elevation of (dp/dt)/IIT by either calcium or isoprenaline infusion in reserpine pretreated dogs did not restore the Bowditch effect.5. Acute depression of (dp/dt)/IIT by propranolol and pentobarbitone was accompanied by a greater rise in (dp/dt)/IIT with pacing in control dogs and a rise rather than a fall in reserpine-pretreated dogs.

Notes: 1. The transient hyperaemia caused by sudden elevation of arterial pressure and reactive hyperaemia after interruption of arterial pressure for 3, 5, 10, 20 and 40 s were studied in the perfused resting hindlimb of anaesthetized areflexic dogs. Experiments were performed using steady-state pressures ranging from 50–150 mmHg.2. The component of the hyperaemia response (ΔQ) that was attributable to resistance vessel distension by a sudden rise in pressure (ΔP), was measured as the difference between peak hyperaemic flow change and the flow change predicted for that ΔP in a system having constant resistance.3. Over the range of steady-state pressures used, vascular conductance was approximately constant, indicating that steady-state flow autoregulation was weak.4. ΔQ was a linear function of ΔP for both the hyperaemia of sudden pressure elevation and reactive hyperaemia, and the ΔQ/ΔP relationships were independent of steady-state perfusion pressure.5. The ΔQ/ΔP relationships for sudden pressure elevation and reactive hyperaemia after 40 s occlusion did not differ significantly. For a given ΔP, however, ΔQ decreased with decreasing occlusion time.6. The magnitude of reactive hyperaemia after brief occlusion depended not only on the degree of resistance vessel relaxation achieved during occlusion but also on the pressure step resulting from restoration of pressure.7. Using data from these experiments in a simple mathematical model of an idealized resistance vessel, a series of distensibility curves were constructed that showed that as active wall tension increased with increasing steady-state pressure, resistance vessel distensibility decreased.
