    Description: Spring phytoplankton blooms in the Gulf of Maine (GoM) are sensitive to climate-related local and remote forcing. Nutrient supply through the slope water intrusion has been viewed as critical in regulating the GoM spring blooms, with an assumption that nitrogen is the primary limiting nutrient. In recent years, this paradigm has been challenged, with silicate being recognized as another potential limiting nutrient, but the source of silicate and its associated water mass remain difficult to be determined. In this study, a time series of spring bloom magnitude was constructed using a self-organizing map algorithm, and then correlated with the fluctuation of water composition in the deep Northeast Channel. The results reveal the importance of silicate supply from previously less-recognized deep Scotian Shelf Water inflow. This study offers a new hypothesis for spring bloom regulation, providing a better understanding of mechanisms controlling the spring bloom magnitude in the GoM.

    Notes: A gas Chromatogrphy method using steam as the carrier gas was established for the determination of salicylic acid in plasma. A 0.5 mL plasma sample was mixed with 0.5 mL of 6N HCl and then extracted with 2 mL of dichloromethane. The dichloromethane was evaporated to dryness and the residue was redissolved in 0.5 mL of water and then analysed by gas Chromatogrphy using steam as the carrying gas. The result was calculated by external standardization.

    Notes: The chemical transformation of synthetic combinatorial libraries to increase the diversity of compounds of medicinal interest was reported recently. Chemical modification of natural products represents a complementary approach to accomplish this aim. Modification of lysines by aromatic acid anhydrides, preferentially by 3-hydroxyphthalic and trimellitic anhydrides and trimellitic anhydride chloride, converted commonly available proteins (human and bovine serum albumin and casein) into potent inhibitors of (i) binding between the HIV-1 gp120 envelope glycoprotein and the CD4 cell receptor, probably owing to their binding to CD4, and (ii) infection by HIV-1. Modified bovind milk proteins are also potent HIV-1 inhibitors and may have protential for anti-Hiv-1 prophylaxis.

    Description: A two dimensional coordination polymer with pseudo-Kagomé net [Cu 3 (btc) 2 (NH 3 ) 8 (H 2 O)] was prepared from Cu(NO 3 ) 2 · 3H 2 O and 1, 3, 5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (btc) in ammonia aqua solution and was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The magnetic susceptibility measurements, measured from 2 to 300 K, revealed a weak anti -ferromagnetic interaction between the Cu II ions via the btc ligands.

    Description: Aims Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) is defined as a pattern of epidermal reaction. However, it has not yet been extensively documented in extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma (ENKTL). The aim of our study was to analyze a series of ENKTL concomitant with PEH mimicking squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods and results Our present study analyzed 34 cases of ENKTL concomitant with PEH. In our study, the incidence of PEH was noted as 3.8% in ENKTL diagnosed over a 13-year period. All 34 cases presented with PEH, appearing as tongue-like projections of squamous epithelium into the underlying submucosa/dermis with variable depth and jagged borders. The keratinocytes may exhibit a minor degree of cytological atypia, mostly in the stratum basale, and keratinocyte necrosis was absent. Atypical mitoses and a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio were absent. The submucosa and the squamous cell cords are permeated by atypical lymphocytes as well. Conclusions ENKTL can be associated with PEH, and the atypical lymphoid cell population can be highly subtle, which may be easily mistaken for SCC and leads to improper therapy. A correct diagnosis requires awareness and recognition of this pitfall by recognizing the associated conditions listed above, which distinguish PEH from SCC. This article is protected by copyright.     Description: miR-203 act as tumor repressor by inhibiting cell proliferation and is repressed in a variety of human tumors, although the molecular mechanisms responsible have not been elucidated. Here, we reveal that miR-203 is regulated by E2F1, an important transcription factor that can induce cell proliferation by controlling cell cycle progression. We found that miR-203 expression was induced by cisplatin, which also induced E2F1 protein accumulation in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cell lines. miR-203 expression was elevated upon activation of ectopic E2F1, whereas this induction was abolished when the E2F1 gene was silenced. Moreover, with luciferase reporter assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays, we demonstrated that E2F1 transactivates miR-203 by directly binding to the miR-203 gene promoter. In addition, we found that miR-203 inhibited cell proliferation by inducing G1/S cell cycle arrest, but not apoptosis, in ESCC cell lines. Finally, we observed that miR-203 negatively inhibited the expression of CDK6, subsequently decreasing E2F1 expression possibly through Rb phosphorylation. Taken together, our data show that cancer-related miR-203 is a novel transcriptional target of E2F1 and that it regulates cell cycle arrest by participating in a feedback loop with E2F1. J. Cell.     Description: Purpose To investigate what extent brain regions are continuously interacting during resting-state, independent component analyses (ICA) was applied to analyze resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI) data. According to the analyzed results, it was surprisingly found that low frequency fluctuations (LFFs), which belong to the 1/f signal (a signal with power spectrum whose power spectral density is inversely proportional to the frequency), have been classified into groups using ICA; furthermore, the spatial distributions of these groups within the brain were found to resemble the spatial distributions of different networks, which manifests that the signal characteristics of RS LFFs are distinct across networks. In our work, we applied the 1/f model in the fractal analyses to further investigate this distinction. Materials and Methods Twenty healthy participants got involved in this study. They were scanned to acquire the RS-fMRI data. The acquired data were first processed with ICA to obtain the networks of the resting brain. Afterward, the blood-oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals of these networks were processed with the fractal analyses for obtaining the fractal parameter α. Results α was found to significantly vary across networks, which reveals that the fractal characteristic of LFFs differs across networks. According to prior literatures, this difference could be brought by the discrepancy of hemodynamic response amplitude (HRA) between networks. Hence, in our work, we also performed the computational simulation to discover the relationship between α and HRA. Based on the simulation results, HRA is highly linear-correlated with the fractal characteristics of LFFs which is revealed by α. Conclusion Our results support that the origin of RS-fMRI signals contains arterial fluctuations. Hence, in addition to the commonly used method such as synchrony analysis and power spectral analysis, another approach, the fractal analysis, is suggested for acquiring the information of hemodynamic responses by means of RS-fMRI data.     Description: Heterogeneity of rock's fabric can induce heterogeneous distribution of immiscible fluids in natural reservoirs, since the lithological variations (mainly permeability) may affect fluid migration in geological time scales, resulting in patchy saturation of fluids. Therefore, fabric and saturation inhomogeneities both affect wave propagation. To model the wave effects (attenuation and velocity dispersion), we introduce a double double-porosity model, where pores saturated with two different fluids overlap with pores having dissimilar compressibilities. The governing equations are derived by using Hamilton's principle based on the potential energy, kinetic energy and dissipation functions, and the stiffness coefficients are determined by gedanken experiments, yielding one fast P wave and four slow Biot waves. Three examples are given, namely, muddy siltstones, clean dolomites and tight sandstones, where fabric heterogeneities at three different spatial scales are analyzed in comparison with experimental data. In muddy siltstones, where intra-pore clay and intergranular pores constitute a sub-microscopic double-porosity structure, wave anelasticity mainly occurs in the frequency range (10 4 -10 7 Hz), while in pure dolomites with microscopic heterogeneity of grain contacts and tight sandstones with mesoscopic heterogeneity of less-consolidated sands, it occurs at 10 3 -10 7 Hz and 10 1 -10 3 Hz (seismic band), respectively. The predicted maximum quality factor of the fast compressional wave for the sandstone is the lowest (approximately 8), and that of the dolomite is the highest. The results of the diffusive slow waves are affected by the strong friction effects between solids and fluids. The model describes wave propagation in patchy-saturated rocks with fabric heterogeneity at different scales, and the relevant theoretical predictions agree well with the experimental data in fully- and partially-saturated rocks.

    Description: Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the association between total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or cancer in a male population in the Kailuan cohort of China. Methods This prospective study included 68,769 Chinese male adults from Kailuan cohort of China who had a standardized medical examination between 2006 and 2007 and were followed up for approximately 8 years until occurrence of ASCVD, cancer or death or until December 31, 2014. Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Multivariable analysis was adjusted for age, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and BMI at baseline. Results During follow-up, 2,916 males developed ASCVD and 1,884 developed cancer. Compared with the lowest quartile, the upper-most quartiles of TC, LDL-C and non-HDL-C were all associated with increased ASCVD risk (HR 1.53, 95% CI 1.37-1.70; HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.05-1.28; HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.39-1.72); however, the upper-most quartiles of TC, LDL-C and non-HDL-C were all negatively associated with cancer (HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.74-0.95; HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.93; HR 0.80, 95%CI 0.70-0.90) and these associations were present after exclusion of incident cancers during the first 4 years of follow-up. Conclusion In this Kailuan cohort study, we report that high TC, LDL-C and non-HDL-C concentrations increased ASCVD incidence in a male population and that these lipid profiles were inversely associated with total cancer and several individual cancers.
