    Notes: The sign of photoinduced free carriers of LiNbO3:Mg and LiNbO3:Mg:Fe(0.05 wt. %) with various MgO contents has been determined by the holographic technique. The photorefraction of these crystals has also been studied. The enhanced resistance to photorefraction of LiNbO3:Mg((approximately-greater-than)5 mol % MgO) results from the occurrence of photoinduced hole free carriers, whose concentration is nearly equal to the electron concentration.

    Notes: We have found that in connection with photorefraction the Li-rich LiNbo3:Mg (5 mol %) can withstand higher light intensities than the congruent LiNbO3:Mg (5 mol %) and that the improvement is due to the increased photoconductivity with little change in photovoltaic current.

    Notes: The interaction and coalescence of small spherical drops in dilute, homogeneous dispersions are considered theoretically under conditions, where drop motion results from gravity settling and thermocapillary migration acting simultaneously. A trajectory analysis is used to predict pairwise collision rates, and population dynamics equations are solved to predict the time evolution of the droplet size distribution. The rate of droplet collisions and growth may be reduced dramatically by antiparallel alignment of the gravitational and thermocapillary velocities. For such antiparallel alignment with the gravitational relative velocity exceeding the thermocapillary relative velocity for two widely separated drops, there is a "collision-forbidden region'' in parameter space. This occurs because the gravitational relative velocity decays more rapidly with decreasing separation distance between the drops than does the thermocapillary relative velocity, and so the resultant relative velocity along the line-of-centers from these two sources combined becomes zero at a finite separation and the drops are unable to collide. As a result, small drops which initially collide and coalesce due to thermocapillary motion will only grow until they reach a critical size for which the oppositely directed gravitational motion balances the thermocapillary motion.

    Notes: Background:  Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is one of the most critical proteins required for the survival, migration, and growth of melanoma cells. IGF-binding protein 2 (IGFBP2), which binds and regulates the function of IGF-1, is upregulated in a dose-dependent manner in melanoma cells treated with IGF-1, suggesting a possible role of IGFBP2 in the pathogenesis of melanoma.Methods:  Tissue microarrays were constructed using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded archival tissue blocks from 94 melanocytic lesions: 20 benign nevi, 20 dysplastic nevi, 23 primary melanomas, and 31 metastatic melanomas. IGFBP2 expression was evaluated immunohistochemically using a polyclonal antibody against the C-terminus of IGFBP2. The number of cells and labeling intensity were assessed semiquantitatively.Results:  Positive IGFBP2 labeling was observed in 5.0% of benign nevi, which was significantly lower than in dysplastic nevi (35.0%), primary melanomas (52.2%), or metastatic melanomas (54.8%) (p 〈 0.05). Among the IGFBP2-positive cases, moderate-to-strong immunostaining was observed in 64.7% of metastatic melanomas and 33.3% of primary melanomas. But none of the dysplastic nevi had moderate-to-strong immunostaining (p 〈 0.05).Conclusions:  Our study shows that IGFBP2 expression increases from benign and dysplastic nevi to primary and metastatic melanomas and suggests that it may play a role in melanoma progression.

    Notes: Abstract:  Melatonin-selenium nanoparticles (MT-Se), a novel complex, were synthesized by preparing selenium nanoparticles in melatonin medium. The present investigation was designed to determine the protective effects of MT-Se against Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG)/lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hepatic injury in mice. In BCG/LPS-induced hepatic injury model, MT-Se administered (i.g.) at doses of 5, 10, or 20 mg/kg to BCG/LPS-treated mice for 10 days, significantly reduced the increase in plasma aminotransferase, reduced the severe extent of hepatic cell damage and the immigration of inflammatory cells. The MT-Se particles also attenuated the increase in the content of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and enhanced the decrease in reduced activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). However, treatment with MT-Se suppressed the increase in nitric oxide levels both in plasma and liver tissue. Furthermore, supplementation with MT-Se at the dose of 10 mg/kg (composed of 9.9 mg/kg melatonin and 0.1 mg/kg selenium) had great capability to protect against hepatocellular damage than a similar dose of melatonin (10 mg/kg) or selenium (0.1 mg/kg) alone. This effect may relate to its higher antioxidant efficacy in decreasing lipid peroxidation and increasing GPx activity. These results suggest that the mode of MT-Se hepatic protective action is, at least in part, related to its antioxidant properties.

    Description: Near-resonant second-harmonic generation (SHG) in c -axis oriented ZnO nanorods is studied under the femtosecond laser with wavelength from 780 nm to 810 nm. A highly efficient SHG is obtained, which is attributed to the d 131 component of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility. The largest d 131 value is estimated to be 10.2 pm/V at the pumping wavelength of 800 nm, which indicates a large SHG response of the c -axis oriented ZnO nanorods in the near-resonant region. Theoretical calculation based on finite-difference time-domain simulation suggests a four-fold local-field enhancement of the SHG.

    Description: In this paper, we demonstrate a dual-band bandpass all-dielectric frequency selective surface (FSS), the building elements of which are high-permittivity ceramic particles rather than metallic patterns. With proper structural design and parameter adjustment, the resonant frequency can be tuned at will. Dual-band bandpass response can be realized due to the coupling between electric and magnetic resonances. As an example, a dual-band bandpass FSS is designed in Ku band, which is composed of two-dimensional periodic arrays of complementary quatrefoil structures (CQS) cut from dielectric plates. Moreover, cylindrical dielectric resonators are introduced and placed in the center of each CQS to broaden the bandwidth and to sharpen the cut-off frequency. Theoretical analysis shows that the bandpass response arises from impedance matching caused by electric and magnetic resonances. In addition, effective electromagnetic parameters and dynamic field distributions are presented to explain the mechanism of impedance matching. The proposed FSS has the merits of polarization independence, stable transmission, and sharp roll-off frequency. The method can also be used to design all-dielectric FSSs with continuum structures at other frequencies.

    Description: One-dimensional gratings consisting of sub-wavelength metallic slot arrays have been widely applied in the design of novel devices due to their polarization-selective characteristics. When the incident electric field is polarized along the slot direction, the slot arrays are opaque, behaving like a metal surface. Here we propose a scheme of making slot arrays transparent for electromagnetic (EM) waves, which is achieved by the incorporation of corrugated metal strip arrays. Incident waves are first converted into spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) propagating along the strips. Since SSPPs confine EM fields in sub-wavelength scales, EM waves can penetrate through the sub-wavelength slots. High transmission was thus obtained, with an efficiency as high as 95%. Moreover, position and bandwidth of the transmission band can be tailored by adjusting the groove depth and the slot width, respectively. It is expected that the design may find potential applications in the multifunctional devices with frequency- and polarization-selective features.

    Description: The temperature dependent conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotube film (MWNT) is reported and the different electrical properties of nanotubes in two composites are compared. Due to the disordered structures, our carbon nanotube film displays variable range hopping behavior. While the geometric distributions of carbon nanotubes in the conducting polyaniline (PANI) and insulating polyamide (PA66) are similar, charge carriers transport distinctly. The conductive PANI, following one-dimensional variable range hopping, dominates the electrical properties of MWNT/PANI composites. The effect of MWNTs becomes prominent only at low temperature range. However, the contact junctions composed by adjacent carbon nanotubes, instead of nanotubes themselves or the polymer matrix, determine the electrical properties of MWNT/PA66 composites, showing the fluctuation induced tunneling characteristic.

    Description: In this paper, we propose the design of all-dielectric metamaterial band-pass frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) using high-permittivity ceramics based on effective medium theory and dielectric resonator theory. The band-pass response can be determined by the permittivity of the dielectric material, the periodicity, and geometrical shape of the dielectric unit cell. As an example, a band-pass FSS composed of H shaped ceramic resonators is demonstrated. Both the simulation and experiment results show that the FSS can achieve a pass band in X-band. Since such FSSs are made of low-loss high-permittivity ceramics, they are of important application values, especially in high-temperature, high-power environments. The design method can be readily extended to the design of FSSs in other frequencies.
