Notes: The resistivity of liquid indium–antimony (In1−xSbx) alloys has been measured as a function of temperature and concentration. On the In-rich side, the resistivity increases linearly with raising temperature and rapidly with addition of Sb concentration. For Sb-rich alloys, clear turning points are found in the temperature coefficient of resistivity; the resistivity behaves smoothly with concentration and shows a peak around x=0.8. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the ability of a simple phenomenological theory to describe the behavior of symmetric diblock copolymer thin films confined between two hard surfaces. Prior knowledge of the morphology in the confined films is crucial for applying this theory to predict the phase diagram of such systems. Taking advantage of our observations in Monte Carlo simulations, we use the theory to construct phase diagrams for thin films confined between patterned-homogeneous surfaces, and obtain good agreement with our results of simulations. Two conditions are essential for obtaining long-range ordered perpendicular lamellae: a lower stripe-patterned surface with the surface pattern period Ls comparable to the bulk lamellar period L0, and an upper neutral or weakly preferential surface. We have also examined the undulation of perpendicular lamellae between two hard surfaces. For the cases of two homogeneous (preferential) surfaces and patterned-preferential surfaces, our calculations using the phenomenological theory indicate that the amplitudes of the undulation are on the same order of magnitude as observed in our Monte Carlo simulations, and are one order of magnitude larger than previously reported. The theory, however, is unable to capture the shape of the undulation. For the case of patterned-neutral surfaces, we find that an earlier analysis is unable to yield the undulations that would stabilize the perpendicular lamellar morphology. We have addressed this issue and obtained undulations that are consistent with our observations from Monte Carlo simulations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin films of symmetric diblock copolymers confined between two hard, flat and homogeneous surfaces have been investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations on a simple cubic lattice. For such simulations, the match between bulk lamellar period L0 and the simulation box size is crucial to obtain meaningful results. The simulations have been performed in an expanded grand-canonical ensemble, where the chemical potential and the temperature of the confined films are specified and the density is allowed to fluctuate. The dependence of morphology, density, and chain conformation in the confined films on the type of surfaces, surface separation, and the strength of surface-block interactions has been studied systematically. Our results are consistent with experimental findings. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A procedure for the extraction and high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) determination of the photodynamic therapeutic agent 5,10,15,20-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin in human, rat and mouse tissues following intravenous administration of the drug is described. The tissue (tumour, skin, muscle and liver) was homogenized and extracted into a mixture of methanol:dimethyl sulphoxide:water (32:8:1 by vol.) containing, 5,10,15,20-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin as the internal standard. The precipitated proteins were removed by centrifugation and the supernatant was separated by reversed phase HPLC on a Hypersil-ODS column with 77% (v/v) acetonitrile in 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid as the mobile phase. The solute was detected with high sensitivity and specificity by a UV-VIS detector set at 423 nm.

Notes: A high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of the photodynamic chemotherapeutic agent 5,10,15,20-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (m-THPC) in human plasma following intravenous infusion is described. The procedure involves extraction of the drug in plasma with methanol/dimethyl sulphoxide (4:1 v/v) containing 5,10,15,20-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl)clorin as the internal standard and separation on a C18 reversed phase column with acetonitrile:0.1% trifluoroacetic acid (77:23 v/v) as the mobile phase. The drug was detected specifically and sensitively at its absorption maximum of 423 nm with a detection limit of 15 ng/mL (signal-to-noise ratio of 5). The intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation (CV) on analysis of a plasma spiked with m-THPC (1 μg/mL) were 2.3 and 3.4% (n=6), respectively.

Notes: A photosensitive polysiloxaneimide precursor was synthesized from oxydianiline, bis(p-aminophenoxy)dimethylsilane, and a diacid chloride. This diacid chloride was prepared by the reaction of thionyl chloride with a diacid, which resulted from the reaction of pyromellitic dianhydride with hydroxyethylacrylate in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The adhesion properties between polyimide and substrates such as SiO2 wafer were improved with introduction of siloxane moiety into the polyimide chain. The dielectric constant decreased with increasing siloxane moiety content. The photocrosslinking reaction results show that an 88-90% gel fraction was reached under the irradiation of a high-pressure mercury lamp. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Highlights: • Comparison of global NEMO and FESOM configurations with emphasis on the Agulhas system. • Both models simulate a reasonable and comparable large-scale circulation. • Both models have individual strengths and weaknesses to match the observations of the WBC system. • The numerical cost of FESOM is twice the one of NEMO. Abstract: Many questions in ocean and climate modelling require the combined use of high resolution, global coverage and multi-decadal integration length. For this combination, even modern resources limit the use of traditional structured-mesh grids. Here we compare two approaches: A high-resolution grid nested into a global model at coarser resolution (NEMO with AGRIF) and an unstructured-mesh grid (FESOM) which allows to variably enhance resolution where desired. The Agulhas system around South Africa is used as a testcase, providing an energetic interplay of a strong western boundary current and mesoscale dynamics. Its open setting into the horizontal and global overturning circulations also requires global coverage. Both model configurations simulate a reasonable large-scale circulation. Distribution and temporal variability of the wind-driven circulation are quite comparable due to the same atmospheric forcing. However, the overturning circulation differs, owing each model's ability to represent formation and spreading of deep water masses. In terms of regional, high-resolution dynamics, all elements of the Agulhas system are well represented. Owing to the strong nonlinearity in the system, Agulhas Current transports of both configurations and in comparison with observations differ in strength and temporal variability. Similar decadal trends in Agulhas Current transport and Agulhas leakage are linked to the trends in wind forcing. Although the number of 3D wet grid points used in FESOM is similar to that in the nested NEMO, FESOM uses about two times the number of CPUs to obtain the same model throughput (in terms of simulated model years per day). This is feasible due to the high scalability of the FESOM code.

Description: Highlights: • We focus on ACC and Southern Ocean MOC during 1958–2007 in 17 CORE-II forced models. • Most CORE-II simulations are close to eddy saturation. • Most CORE-II simulations are far from showing signs of eddy compensation. • Constant in time or space k results in poor representation of mesoscale eddy effects. • MOC has larger sensitivity than ACC transport even in eddy saturated state. Abstract: In the framework of the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II), we present an analysis of the representation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in a suite of seventeen global ocean–sea ice models. We focus on the mean, variability and trends of both the ACC and MOC over the 1958–2007 period, and discuss their relationship with the surface forcing. We aim to quantify the degree of eddy saturation and eddy compensation in the models participating in CORE-II, and compare our results with available observations, previous fine-resolution numerical studies and theoretical constraints. Most models show weak ACC transport sensitivity to changes in forcing during the past five decades, and they can be considered to be in an eddy saturated regime. Larger contrasts arise when considering MOC trends, with a majority of models exhibiting significant strengthening of the MOC during the late 20th and early 21st century. Only a few models show a relatively small sensitivity to forcing changes, responding with an intensified eddy-induced circulation that provides some degree of eddy compensation, while still showing considerable decadal trends. Both ACC and MOC interannual variabilities are largely controlled by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Based on these results, models are clustered into two groups. Models with constant or two-dimensional (horizontal) specification of the eddy-induced advection coefficient κ show larger ocean interior decadal trends, larger ACC transport decadal trends and no eddy compensation in the MOC. Eddy-permitting models or models with a three-dimensional time varying κ show smaller changes in isopycnal slopes and associated ACC trends, and partial eddy compensation. As previously argued, a constant in time or space κ is responsible for a poor representation of mesoscale eddy effects and cannot properly simulate the sensitivity of the ACC and MOC to changing surface forcing. Evidence is given for a larger sensitivity of the MOC as compared to the ACC transport, even when approaching eddy saturation. Future process studies designed for disentangling the role of momentum and buoyancy forcing in driving the ACC and MOC are proposed.
