Description: An Iranian tanker with 136,000 tons of natural gas condensates collided with a freighter in the East China Sea in January 2018 and, after drifting ablaze for 8 days and over 200 km, capsized on the edge of the shelf near the Kuroshio Current. Different from the crude oil, the condensates consist of hydrocarbons that have relatively high solubility in seawater. We postulate that the leakage from the remaining condensate cargo at 110 m depth may result in a bottom layer of condensate‐enriched water in the vicinity of the resting tanker. A model is constructed in this study to simulate the dispersion of contaminated water through the processes of oceanic advection, diffusion, biodegradation, and volatilization. It is found that the scope and magnitude of the dispersion are most sensitive to the biodegradation. Even though the biodegradation time scale depends on several factors that are not well quantified in this region, using any value within the estimated range from a previous study results in significant contamination in the broad area. The dispersion is particularly effective in this incident because the tanker capsized near the Kuroshio Current—a fast‐moving western boundary current. The Kuroshio acts as a fast conduit to spread the contaminant to the east coast of Japan and the interior Pacific Ocean. In addition, we identify that the Tsushima Warm Current, a perennial flow into the Japan Sea, is the second major conduit for spreading the polluted water. This study indicates that dissolved hydrocarbons are the main environmental risk for maritime spills of natural gas condensates.

Description: The Southern Ocean is thought to be one of the most energetic regions in the world’s oceans. As a result, it is a location of vigorous diapycnal mixing of heat, salt and biogeochemical properties1, 2, 3. At the same time, the Southern Ocean is poorly sampled, not least because of its harsh climate and remote location. Yet the spatial and temporal variation of diapycnal diffusivity in this region plays an important part in the large-scale ocean circulation and climate4, 5, 6. Here we use high-resolution hydrographic profiles from Argo floats in combination with the Iridium communications system to investigate diapycnal mixing in the Southern Ocean. We find that the spatial distribution of turbulent diapycnal mixing in the Southern Ocean at depths between 300 and 1,800 m is controlled by the topography, by means of its interaction with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The seasonal variation of this mixing can largely be attributed to the seasonal cycle of surface wind stress and is more pronounced in the upper ocean over flat topography. We suggest that additional high-resolution profiles from Argo floats will serve to advance our understanding of mixing processes in the global ocean interior.

Description: Subtropical western boundary currents are warm, fast-flowing currents that form on the western side of ocean basins. They carry warm tropical water to the mid-latitudes and vent large amounts of heat and moisture to the atmosphere along their paths, affecting atmospheric jet streams and mid-latitude storms, as well as ocean carbon uptake1, 2, 3, 4. The possibility that these highly energetic currents might change under greenhouse-gas forcing has raised significant concerns5, 6, 7, but detecting such changes is challenging owing to limited observations. Here, using reconstructed sea surface temperature datasets and century-long ocean and atmosphere reanalysis products, we find that the post-1900 surface ocean warming rate over the path of these currents is two to three times faster than the global mean surface ocean warming rate. The accelerated warming is associated with a synchronous poleward shift and/or intensification of global subtropical western boundary currents in conjunction with a systematic change in winds over both hemispheres. This enhanced warming may reduce the ability of the oceans to absorb anthropogenic carbon dioxide over these regions. However, uncertainties in detection and attribution of these warming trends remain, pointing to a need for a long-term monitoring network of the global western boundary currents and their extensions.

Description: Background: Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) to spontaneously breathing preterm infants has been reported to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in previous study. The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility and potential benefits of LISA in early preterm infants on nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) compared to conventional endotracheal instillation. Methods: All infants with respiratory distress born at 28–32 weeks’ gestational age from January 2012 to December 2012 (n=90), who were eligible for exogenous pulmonary surfactant (PS) therapy were randomized to receive PS by intubation with an endotracheal tube (Intubation group, n=43), or by intubation using a catheter while on nCPAP (LISA group, n=47). Respiratory indices were recorded every 30 seconds during PS administration, and every 1 hour thereafter for the first day. The rate of mechanical ventilation (MV) in the first 72 hours, mean duration of both MV and nCPAP, mean duration of oxygen requirement and neonatal outcomes were recorded. Results: PS was successfully administered in 43 (100%) out of 43 babies using the conventional approach and in 46 (97%) out of 47 babies using LISA. The duration of both MV and nCPAP was significantly shorter in LISA group, when compared with intubation group. However, there were no significant differences in both the rate of MV in the first 72 hours and mean duration of oxygen requirement. There were also no differences in the mortality or in the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, retinopathy of prematurity and necrotizing enterocolitis, or in the duration of respiratory support. Conclusions: LISA in spontaneously breathing infants on nCPAP is an alternative therapy for PS delivery, avoiding intubation with an endotracheal tube. The method is feasible and potentially effective, and deserves further clinical trials.Trial registrationCurrent Controlled Trials ChiCTR-ICR-15006001. Registered 20 February 2015.
