    Notes: Summary Pre and perinatal malnutrition of rats was effected by means of limiting the mothers' food intake by 50% during pregnancy and lactation. Male offspring were sacrificed at 36 weeks of age and the anterior tibialis (ANTIB) and soleus (SOL) muscles were prepared for histochemical demonstration of Type I, IIA and IIB muscle fibre types using myosin ATPase and succinic dehydrogenase activity. Muscle weights and mean muscle fibre area determinations showed greater decreases in ANTIB than SOL, SOL muscle fibre areas being relatively unaffected by the undernutrition regimen. The proportions present of the muscle fibre types differed in ANTIB and to a small extent in SOL. In the former muscle, some decreases in area in certain of the fibres were associated with increases in the percentages present, showing a tendency to maintain the physiological cross-sectional area of the muscle.

    Notes: Summary Early undernutrition of male and female rats was effected by limiting the mothers' food supply by 40% during pregnancy and lactation. The rats were killed at the age of 20 weeks and physiologically fast and slow skeletal muscles were prepared for histochemical demonstration of muscle fibre types. In the fast extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and the slow soleus (SOL) significant decreases in muscle weight were seen only in male experimental animals. Decreases in muscle fibre type cross-sectional area were found in the EDL in both males and females. In SOL, both fibre types showed evidence of fibre hypertrophy, and this was statistically significant in male animals. No changes were seen in the proportions present of the fibre types in either of the muscles.

    Notes: Summary The possibility of a ‘hippocampal syndrome’ was investigated in mature animals whose mothers had received a period of undernutrition during pregnancy and throughout lactation. Spontaneous alternation behaviour was abolished, and performance was found to be at chance level. Significant depletions in cell numbers were found throughout the hippocampal region; however, hippocampal theta rhythm remained and threshold levels for theta driving appeared normal. It was concluded that the behavioural differences observed did not arise from some simple deficit in the circuitry controlling hippocampal theta rhythm and that it was more likely due to an impairment at the synaptic level. The similarity of these, and other recent behavioural observations, to those of animals with hippocampal damage may provide a reasonable basis for investigating a number of learning deficits induced by early undernutrition.

At age 36 weeks, quantitative cytochemical determinations of succinic dehydrogenase activity were made in muscle fibres from the anterior tibialis and soleus muscles. Marked decreases were found in the former muscle but relatively little decrease was seen in the latter. This response of the muscles to early undernutrition was discussed with reference to other studies on pre and post-natal starvation.

    Notes: Abstract Prosthecae were sheared from cells ofAsticcacaulis biprosthecum with a Sorvall omnimixer and purified by centrifugation. Removal of prosthecae resulted in no loss in viability. Purified prosthecae contain protein, carbohydrates and lipids. Certain enzymes that are present in the main body of the cell are also present in prosthecae: malic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.37), alkaline phosphatase (E. C. 3.1.3.1), succinic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.3.99.1), cytochromec reductase (E.C. 1.6.2.a), and cytochromes. Other enzymes present in whole cells are not in prosthecae: isocitric dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.41), NADH oxidase (E.C. 1.6.99.3), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.49), and lactic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.2.3). Swarmer cells (non-prosthecate) were purified by allowing prosthecate cells to attach to cheesecloth in the growth medium. Envelopes prepared from prosthecae were compared with envelope from swarmer cells. The two envelope fractions differed in the disc-gel electrophoretic patterns of proteins solubilized from them.

    Notes: Abstract Microbial succession has been observed on electron microscope grids immersed in lake water for 1, 3, 6, and 10 days. As predicted by ecological theory, the biomass, numbers, and diversity of attached microorganisms increased as succession proceeded. The diversity index of Shannon showed a marked increase from 3.1 at day 1 to 4.2 at day 3. It continued to rise at day 6 and attained the maximum value calculated on day 10 of 4.8. Bacteria were the major pioneer colonizers in this mesotrophic community. Based on these results and the results of other microbiologists who have found bacteria to be the dominant component during the pioneer stage of succession in periphyton communities of varying trophic status, we suggest that microbial heterotrophs may commonly, and perhaps always, be the major component of the early pioneer community of autogenic successions.

    Notes: Abstract The properties of human tear 4-methylumbelliferone sulphate sulphatase (EC 3.1.6.1) have been investigated. More than 80% of the enzyme activity behaved as the acidic A isoenzyme on isoelectric focusing and DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography. The distribution of enzyme activity in a normal population has been investigated. The least interindividual variation was seen when enzyme activities were calculated as units per mg tears. The α-galactosidase. Β-N-acetylglucosaminidase and sulphatase enzyme activities in human tears varied independently of each other. The use of tear sulphatases for the detection of metachromatic leukodystrophy (McKusick 24980) is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We present estimates of total nitrogen and total phosphorus fluxes in rivers to the North Atlantic Ocean from 14 regions in North America, South America, Europe, and Africa which collectively comprise the drainage basins to the North Atlantic. The Amazon basin dominates the overall phosphorus flux and has the highest phosphorus flux per area. The total nitrogen flux from the Amazon is also large, contributing 3.3 Tg yr−1 out of a total for the entire North Atlantic region of 13.1 Tg yr−1 . On a per area basis, however, the largest nitrogen fluxes are found in the highly disturbed watersheds around the North Sea, in northwestern Europe, and in the northeastern U.S., all of which have riverine nitrogen fluxes greater than 1,000 kg N km−2 yr−1. Non-point sources of nitrogen dominate riverine fluxes to the coast in all regions. River fluxes of total nitrogen from the temperate regions of the North Atlantic basin are correlated with population density, as has been observed previously for fluxes of nitrate in the world's major rivers. However, more striking is a strong linear correlation between river fluxes of total nitrogen and the sum of anthropogenically-derived nitrogen inputs to the temperate regions (fertilizer application, human-induced increases in atmospheric deposition of oxidized forms of nitrogen, fixation by leguminous crops, and the import/export of nitrogen in agricultural products). On average, regional nitrogen fluxes in rivers are only 25% of these anthropogenically derived nitrogen inputs. Denitrification in wetlands and aquatic ecosystems is probably the dominant sink, with storage in forests perhaps also of importance. Storage of nitrogen in groundwater, although of importance in some localities, is a very small sink for nitrogen inputs in all regions. Agricultural sources of nitrogen dominate inputs in many regions, particularly the Mississippi basin and the North Sea drainages. Deposition of oxidized nitrogen, primarily of industrial origin, is the major control over river nitrogen export in some regions such as the northeastern U.S. Using data from relatively pristine areas as an index of change, we estimate that riverine nitrogen fluxes in many of the temperate regions have increased from pre-industrial times by 2 to 20 fold, although some regions such as northern Canada are relatively unchanged. Fluxes from the most disturbed region, the North Sea drainages, have increased by 6 to 20 fold. Fluxes from the Amazon basin are also at least 2 to 5 fold greater than estimated fluxes from undisturbed temperate-zone regions, despite low population density and low inputs of anthropogenic nitrogen to the region. This suggests that natural riverine nitrogen fluxes in the tropics may be significantly greater than in the temperate zone. However, deforestation may be contributing to the tropical fluxes. In either case, projected increases in fertilizer use and atmospheric deposition in the coming decades are likely to cause dramatic increases in nitrogen loading to many tropical river systems.

The method is capable of a precision of 1% or better. The solubilities of 18-crown-6-bis-/thallium-o-nitrophenoxide/ in acetonitrile, benzene, chloroform and DMF were measured.
