    Notes: Abstract The absolute intensity and the spectrum of the visible and ultraviolet radiation from the discharge of a self-quenching Geiger-Müller counter was investigated between 2,200 and 6,500 Å. Because of the extremely weak radiation during the growth of the avalanches, an extremely sensitive optical spectrometer set-up was built, which was able to detect single photons from the counter discharge in small wavelength intervals. The intensity and spectrum of the discharge light was measured. Lines of neutral and single-ionized Argon were identified. The main intensity was found for wavelengths above 3,100 Å, but no lines below 2,800 Å. For large overvoltages, a weak continuum appeared between 2,300 and 2,800 Å.

    Notes: Summary Adult males ofLytta vesicatoria (Coleopt., Meloidae) synthesize cantharidin, but females do not, although the substance is present in the females too. We developed a method for rearing larvae of this parasitic beetle in the laboratory. It is shown that there exist 7 larval stages and 4 hypermetamorphic forms (triungulinus, second larva,pseudochrysalis and fourth larva). Larvae from the second to the fifth stage (second larva) synthesize cantharidin. Therefore, we conclude that the substance present in the adult female is at least in part synthesized in the larval period. Nothing is known about the biological significance of this biochemical sexual dimorphism.

    Notes: Summary In contrast to the female, the adult males ofLytta vesicatoria (Coleopt. Meloidae) produced radioactive cantharidine on injection with14C-1-acetate and14C-2-mevalonate solutions. A partial degradation of the cantharidine showed that in the acetate experiment approximately ⅔ of the activity occurred at C atoms 2 + 3 whereas with mevalonate approximately ⅛ of the activity was at C atoms 8 + 9 and ⅙ at C atoms 10 + 11. These results show that cantharidine is not formed by a tail to tail linkage of 2 isoprene units.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The enthalpies of activation of the mutarotation of α-glucose catalysed by anions (formate ion, acetate ion, α-glucosate ion, hydroxide ion) correspond to the enthalpy of activation of the elementary reaction between α-glucose and water. Only the activation entropies are different from each other. According to our conclusion these catalytic reactions take place in such a way, that the hydrate sheath of the ions reacts primarily with the α-glucose.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Aktivierungsenthalpien der durch Anionen (Formiation, Acetation, α-Glucosat-ion, Hydroxidion) katalysierten Mutarotation der α-Glucose entsprechen der Aktivierungsenthalpie der Elementarreaktion zwischen α-Glucose und Wasser. Diese Katalysen unterscheiden sich nur in den Aktivierungsentropien voneinander. Es wird dargelegt, daß es sich dabei um eine Wasserkatalyse handelt, wobei die Hydrathülle der Ionen mit der α-Glucose primär in Reaktion tritt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The minor alkaloids (−)-eburnamine (3) and (+)-pycnanthinine (4), an until now unknown dimeric alkaloid C40H46N4O2, have been isolated from the root bark of Pleiocarpa pycnantha (K. Schum.) Stapf. Acid hydrolysis of4 gave formaldehyde, (+)-pleiocarpamine (1) and (−)-6,7-dehydro-aspidospermidine (7), the N(a)-methyl derivative (6) of7 also being formed under reductive conditions. These results, together with physical data, particularly an analysis of the 100 Mc NMR-spectrum, have lead to the structure4 for pycnanthinine, closely related to that of (+)-pycnanthine (2).
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Aus der Wurzelrinde von Pleiocarpa pycnantha (K. Schum.) Stapf wurden neu die Nebenalkaloide (−)-Eburnamin (3) und die bisher unbekannte dimere Indolbase (+)-Pycnanthinin (4; C40H46N4O2) isoliert. Säurekatalysierte Hydrolyse von4 lieferte Formaldehyd, (+)-Pleiocarpamin (1) und (−)-6,7-Dehydro-aspidospermidin (7); bei der reduzierend ausgeführten Spaltung resultierte neben7 die N(a)-methylierte Base6. Daraus, aus Elektronen- und Massenspektren, der Analyse des 100-MHz-Protonenresonanzspektrums sowie aus dem Vergleich mit (+)-Pycnanthin (2) ließ sich für Pycnanthinin die Formel4 ableiten.
