Notes: Summary An investigation method is proposed to find out quantitatively the beginning and the degree of „washerwoman's hands“ at the fingertips. To answer the question, for how long there was contact with a fluid medium, systematic investigations are necessary to measure the width of the „cristae papillares“ of several test persons with an onlight-photomicroscope under similar fluid conditions.

Notes: Abstract The reproductibility of tank experiments concerning unicellular marine algal development was analyzed by means of parallel experiments with cultures ofThalassiosira rotula andSkeletonema costatum, using large flexible plastic tanks under semi-natural conditions. The tanks (3–4 m3, 4–5 m deep) were exposed in the German Bight at a station in the outer harbour of helgoland. The water was obtained from the open North Sea in towable tanks; it was filtered (plate filter), enriched with nitrate (20–30 μgat dm−3), phosphate (1.3–2.3 μgat dm−3) and silicate (15–23 μgat dm−3)-nearly natural springtime concentrations in this area-and inoculated with 103–105 cells dm−3. The water was mixed with non-metal stirring equipment. Within 5 days, concentrations of 106–107 cells dm−3 in an exponential growth phase were obtained. In experiments withT. rotula a parallel development was achieved in spite of some contamination by surrounding water. This is the case for nearly all parameters analyzed (nutrient salts, phytoplankton, bacteria, C, N and particulate carbohydrates). The heterotrophic bacteria, which were determined by means of the plate method, reached concentrations of up to 106 (T. rotula) and 105 (S. costatum) CFU cm−3, respectively. They showed a consistent retrograde development at diatom concentrations above a certain level. The crop did not increase again until the diatoms had reached the stationary phase. During exponential growth ofT. rotula (G=8.9–11.7 h) a partially synchronous cell division was observed. There were also rhythms with respect to cell size (pervalvar axes) and chain length (number of cells). For the experiments withS. costatum (G=10–11.4 h) diurnal variations of cell size and chain length occurred. The present results indicate acceptable reproducibility of algal development and related phenomena in enclosed water bodies.

Notes: Summary The role of radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy in the primary treatment of osteogenic sarcomas and of Ewing's sarcoma is reviewed. In osteosarcoma radiotherapy can take the form of prophylactic total irradiation of the lung, but preoperative irradiation of the primary tumor has not proved successful. On the other hand, in Ewing's sarcoma primary and local irradiation is the therapy of choice, and is followed by adjuvant polychemotherapy over a long period.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Spatergebnisse der rekonstruktiven Arterienchirurgie werden an 5245 operierten Kranken der Chirurgischen Universitätskliniken Köln und München (1959–1974) dargestellt. Ruptur) Voraussetzung.
Notes: Summary The long-term follow-up results of reconstructive vascular surgery are demonstrated in 5245 patients operated on in the University Surgical Clinics in Cologne and Munich (1959–1974). With low surgical lethality and morbidity, operative treatment of cerebrovascular insufficiency (378 patients) or renovascular hypertension (257 patients) guarantees longer survival. In cases of aorto-iliacal (2547 patients) and femoropopliteal (1440 patients) occlusion, the object of therapy is the preservation of the extremity. For good results, operative treatment of peripheral and aortic aneurysms should be performed before complications such as thromboembilism or rupture of the aneurysm occur.

Notes: Abstract Nd pentaphosphate is a crystalline material with very high Nd concentration (30 times higher than 1 % Nd doped YAG) and yet low concentration quenching. It is an excellent material to construct optically pumped, miniaturized, low threshold lasers, oscillating at 1.05μsm. Material characteristics including spectroscopic properties relevant to laser properties are reviewed. Experiments on pulsed and CW laser action in this material including the recent achievement of a miniaturized fibre laser with only 12×12 um cross section are summarized.

Notes: Abstract Organic materials have been shown to be quite useful for the fabrication of integrated-optics devices. The fabrication of low loss (0.1 dB cm−1) sheet-film waveguides and studies of high gain (100 dB cm−1) thin-film laser amplifiers and oscillators are reviewed. Techniques employing photosensitive components have made it possible to make three-dimensional waveguides which have the lowest losses reported so far (0.2 dB cm−1 in single-mode structures). Surface and index gratings and related devices made with organic materials are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract NMR in the alkali molecules Na2 and Cs2 is performed by the atom-molecule exchange optical pumping method. The shielding differences σ(Na)−σ(Na2)=(29±16)·10−6 and σ(Cs)−σ(Cs2)=(221±12)·10−6 are obtained. The investigation of the contribution of the valence electron to the magnetic shielding is supported by a NMR experiment in free Cs+ ions, which yields the shielding difference σ(Cs)−σ(Cs+)=(14±12)·10−6. These measurements allow an estimation of the spin rotation interaction constant in these molecules.
