    Notes: SUMMARY. Cohort production of the crayfish. Orconectes virilis, ranged from 148.8 to 70.2 kg in North Twin Lake (surface area 1.9 ha) and from 151.9 to 84.9 kg in West Lost Lake (surface area 1.4 ha). Both cohort production (P) and cohort mean biomass (B) showed a long-term decrease with time. The cohort P/B ratios did not show such a trend but remained steady. The P/B ratio approximated the life cycle instantaneous rate of growth (G) which could then be used for estimating cohort production from mean biomass.Production remained consistently higher in West Lost Lake. Analysis of horizontal life table data revealed no inherent difference between survival and fecundity rates of the crayfish population in each lake. Slight differences in basin morphometry between the two lakes determined nursery habitat availability and this affected recruitment of young from each female brood stock. Small differences in carrying capacity between two similar sized nearby lakes, along with a decrease in carrying capacity over time, were sufficient to nullify attempts to manage these populations using a maximum sustainable yield model.

    Notes: Abstract Tissue culture selection techniques were used to isolate a maize (Zea mays L.) variant D33, in which the aspartate family pathway was less sensitive to feedback inhibition by lysine. D33 was recovered by successively subculturing cultures originally derived from immature embryos on MS medium containing growth-inhibitory levels of lysine+threonine. The ability of D33 to grow vigorously on lysine+ threonine medium was retained after growth for 12 months on nonselection medium. New cultures initiated from shoot tissues of plants regenerated from D33 also were resistant to lysine+threonine inhibition. The Ki of aspartokinase for its feedback inhibitor, lysine, was about 9-fold higher in D33 than for the enzyme from unselected cultures. The free pools of lysine, threonine, isoleucine and methionine were increased 2–9-fold in D33 cultures. This was consistent with the observed change in feedback regulation of aspartokinase, the first enzyme common to the biosynthesis of these amino acids in the aspartate pathway. The accumulated evidence including the stability of resistance in the cultures, the resistance of cultures initiated from regenerated plants, the altered feedback regulation, and the increased free amino acids, indicates a mutational origin for these traits in line D33.

    Notes: Poly-6-(acryloyloxymethyl)uracil was prepared by radical-catalyzed polymerization of monomeric 6-(acryloyloxymethyl)uracil. The reaction of 6-chloromethyluracil with the potassium salt of polyacrylic acids of molecular weights 5000 and 90,000 gave polymers with both carboxylate groups and 50-70% pendant uraciles. Some inferences concerning the arrangement of uracil groups are drawn from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the latter polymers. No interaction between poly(A) and the synthetic polymers could be observed.
