Notes: The purpose of the present investigation was to study the histogenesis of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary glands. Eleven cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the minor salivary glands and five of the major glands were extensively studied employing immunohistochemical and fluorescent microscopic techniques. Both the intermediate cells and the duct cells showed a rather similar pattern of reactivity for vimentin, actin and EMA. Also, the intermediate cells and the myoepithelial cells showed a similar reaction pattern for keratin and UGA-1. The intermediate, myoepithelial and duct cells shared a similar reaction pattern for desmin, myosin, CEA, and S-100 protein. However, the rest of the tumor markers studied (AFP, PNA and WGA) were found to be non contributary. We also found that the intermediate and to some extent the epidermoid tumor cells showed a positive reaction with Azophloxine GA, which is a selective stain for myoepithelial cells in the normal glands. Based on these findings, the duct cells, the myoepithelial cell in the normal glands and the intermediate cells of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma share certain similar characteristics. The intermediate cells may actually be a mixed population, some having characteristics of the myopithelial cells and others of duct cells. These findings are relevant to the possible role of the intermediate cell in the histogenesis of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Notes: Abstract Adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia has the worst prognosis of all sites, and treatment is often palliative. This study has reviewed 736 patients with carcinoma of the cardia registered with the Birmingham Cancer Registry during 1960–1969. Fifty-eight percent of the patients presented with advanced disease. Radical resection was accomplished in 265 (36%). The age adjusted 5-year survival for all patients was 4.5% and 9.8% for those undergoing radical resection. In patients with advanced disease, palliative resection was associated with a longer survival than for those treated by intubation (p 〈 0.001) and this difference was maintained even in the presence of liver or peritoneal metastases. There was no difference in the 30-day mortality rates for those undergoing palliative resection or intubation and it is suggested that resection be undertaken whenever possible.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR—The recent comments of Winfree1, together with the anecdotal data from Woodruff and Ford3, raise the issues of whether adjustment to a new time-zone can be promoted by behavioural changes (including meals and exercise) and whether this process of adjustment can begin during the flight ...

Notes: Summary Recent work concerning the number, site(s) and means of adjustment to the 24-h day of internal clocks is reviewed. Work on humans is considered wherever possible though much of the work involving ablation and in vitro techniques necessarily involves other species, particularly rodents. It is concluded that, though recent advances have been impressive and present techniques appear likely to continue to produce results and stimulate discussion, more attention should be directed to considering the circadian system as a whole rather than as an assemblage of individual components.

Notes: Summary Recently much attention has been directed to the validation of analytical methods. The level of validation will depend on the method application. If a method is developed for general use, for instance by different analysts, instruments or laboratories, then the effect of these changes need evaluation. This is normally referred to as ruggedness testing, where the limitations of the method to changes in the specified conditions are examined. This paper examines the use of Plackett-Burman fractional factorial experiment designs for ruggedness testing in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The ability of these designs to identify confounding effects is applied to the stability indicating analysis of Salbutamol and its major degradation product, AH4045. The results show that confounding effects, proving extremely pertinent to HPLC, can be identified. The assay proved rugged to most tested changes although not to the use of column packing material from different manufacturers.
